Okay guys.

The real questions here are:

- How long does Jack have left? I say 4 years. Minimum.

- Who kicks 3-5 goals a game? Lynch.

- Who kicks 1-4 goals a game and tackles like a madman? Townsend.

- Who do the other players know, love, and get behind? Townsend.

- Who is 5x more expensive? Lynch.

Sorry for being annoying...

Honestly, I'm +1 for team harmony and saving money to pay players who will command more in the near future, like Rioli, Butler, Castagna, even Vlastuin.

We are on a seriously good thing at the moment.

Let our next tall happen more organically and eventually replace Jack, when the time eventually comes.

For now, let's save the money.
Remember a factor is giving nank a chop out so we don't burn him up, and that we will play teams (including this week) that have a really tall 2nd ruck which can hurt us in the middle.

I’d rather stick with CCJ and Balta as our KPF brigade and recruit again next year. I know they take a while to develop but I really think CCJ is developing quite nicely and Balta does have something really special about him that I believe our current staff can nurture. Bringing in Lynch could really unsettle that. I’d rather be paying our current players the money they’re warranted for their efforts last season and this season.
It's madness from Rance, the aim of the game is winning flags, its not as though Lynch is a knobjockey like Stringer

I'd be shocked if we payed that type of money for him..... just won't happen
Any other names that we have heard we may be into?

Whilst I'm not convinced we actually need this guy, or that he's a million dollar player, our spine would look something like this for the next few years:

Rance
Astbury
Martin
Riewoldt
Lynch

It's almost like cheating.

Positive: Lynch is a proven high quality KPF, leader and coming into his peak.

Negative: Costs a motza and will take a spot that a kid might get.

If we are after premierships now then go for it HARD! Lynch makes that next premiership more likely. He takes Jacks spot. Jack takes Towno's spot, and does whatever he wants. We still play the one tall forward line. But have a floating 2 x Coleman medalist drilling it in, or staying deep, or whatever.

If this deal comes through it creates problems down the track. One premiership fixes that. 2 makes it worthwhile big time.

I'm thinking fairly short term on this 5 years max. Our window is wide open. Lynch fixes a problem we have - depth in KPF and 2nd rucks.

If we could trade for him , I'd trade Shai Bolton, Callum Coleman Jones and a first round draft pick and ask Lynch to take only $800,000

Not overly keen

If we do get him what would we need to give up?
Goes without saying he is worth 2 first rounders but would they want more or perhaps 2 and a couple of good players?

Next year we get Big Tom to go FF leaving Jack to roam up and down the wing ala Richo 2008, for a brownlow winning season?
Make it happen Tiges!

That’s right wonders the likely hood of this getting done. More I think about it the more I want it :)

Geez i laughed when i heard the Tigers are allegedly offering $1.4 mill. We didn't even offer that for Dusty.
Lynch will sign at a club like Richmond for unders and the chance at a flag.
So around $800-900k for 5-6 years.
Jack is 30 next year. Lynch makes sense.
Ignore the wank and hype. The club knows what it's doing.

Just had a very similar discussion with a good mate of mine.
Rance has already said they'd be open to having Tom come talk to the leadership group.
We believe the discussion will go along the lines of "We'd love to have you as part of our team, as part of our culture, and as part of a winning formula going forward. But anything more than $900K is ludicrous given where we're at".
Not that the players have any say in contracts, but Tom would surely understand the sentiment.
$900K over 5 years is certainly manageable, with perhaps 1 year front loaded at a higher figure to get it over the line.

Honestly depends on how we for the rest of the year

If we win premiership again prob wont get him.

If we dont, expect us to go hard at someone due the fact we are in the window and need to strike now. Might stuff us in the long run but these opportunities dont come often.

Exactly. I'd be surprised if the Tiges executive were not all over this. Basically seems to be telling Lynch as well as Richmond's footballers that we'd love to have him but not at any cost. So to get to us he'll have to accept less than he could get elsewhere because the integrity of our community football culture is not negotiable.
that's a very good point and as mentioned im comfortable we re in good hands and will make a balanced decision rather than an impetuous and desperate one. This may be the early part of a calculated campaign that lures lynch to the rfc on our terms not millionaire playboy terms

Anybody who believes Richmond will be paying Tom Lynch $1.4 million a year for 5/6 years needs their head read as that simply wont happen,Perhaps we may structure the salary scale something like 3 x $1.4 mil the 3 x $800k just to get the deal past GC and ensure they get the best pick possible not to match and force a trade but in reality the deal will be around $1 mil a year over 5/6 years imo - Richmond Football Club wont be selling the farm

Whats his true value ? Well there is a couple of ways to look at this
GC have been terrible and extremely under performing and Lynch being Co Captain would have alot on his mind and would consume so much emotion and would have to effect his on field performance then add into the mix the facilities,The Players with leadership and ontop of all this also their medical department have been a shambles - Its hard to see any player that has really developed there apart from a few. Lynch would be a very very different player in the Richmond line up with his role clearly set out and only his role to concentrate on.

I see Lynch playing alot further up the ground rotating with Jack,He has a huge tank and is a great mark with a natural ability to beat his opponent consistently very rarely will he be out marked 40% FF / 40% HF 20% Ruck relief - Lynch would kick 40 goals a year playing this type of role

If Lynch was a current Richmond player up for contract talks we would easily be offering him $900k-$1mil to stay so its not going to be like selling the farm to get him.
2019 out of contract these players will be
30 - Alex Rance (2019)
31 - Jack Riewoldt (2019)
31 - Shane Edwards (2019)

2020 and beyond

30 - Trent Cotchin (2020)
33 - Dustin Martin (2024)
28 - Josh Caddy (2020)
29 - Dion Prestia (2021)
30 - Dylan Grimes (2021)

I cant see any of the above listed players apart from Josh Caddy needing an increase in their salaries after their current contracts are up for negotiations with them all being over 30 or near 30.

Richmond are in a great place in regards to getting in another top line player on $1 mil a year and our Cap could easily fit that with the way our team is structered.

We have a top 10 and the rest are Role players

Lambert (2019), Rioli (2019),Vlastuin (2019), Butler (2019), Castagna (2019), Graham (2020) Astbury (2019)are the players that would most likely see increases in the next 2-3 years but with Grigg,Hampson,Houli

We currently have 19 players that are out of contract at the end of 2018 with 4/5 i believe will be finishing up with the club and are in a perfect position to re contract the required integral players going foward and know exactly what our position is and what we can afford.

If Lynch is in our team it could mean Lambert, Castagna, Butler, Rioili, JR, Dusty up forward, Townsend, Caddy, Edwards, and others in our mobile smaller fleet are less effective.

This is why I think some like Balta's potential could be more effective because his speed, athletic prowess and defensive capability as well as versatility would in theory be more conducive to complementing our team mix and make them better. On the other hand is Tom Lynch's still against our grain and would he make us a weaker team taking us away from a premiership?

I still believe we overpaid for Prestia let alone Tom Lynch!

He is a restricted free agent and the compo they get would likely be better than what we would offer.

He'll get a $1m comfortably from any Club interested - discussions won't even begin under that - people forget players have rabid Managers willing to sell their soul (and sole) cos they live off the % and will say anything to Lynch to get him believing 'what he's worth'. Fact is he is worth different amounts to different Clubs. StKilda for example need to throw the crown jewels at him - just a pity their jewels are crystals and not diamonds. But they are competition all the same / as are Hawks. I expect North to be in the mix eventually.

On exposed form he's probably not deserving of that sort of $1m pay packet, but his potential is huge.

Good on Rancey for saying what he thinks, and/or believes might be status quo - would have been so much easier to play a straight bat as most players are coached to do.

I agree with you but the caveat is that they may not want draft picks despite the upcoming "Super Draft". In previous years they have been after established talent which could throw a spanner in the works.

I understand the counter argument is that they could use those compo picks to trade for established players from other clubs but convincing players to join GCS has proven to be difficult.

Just remember, you generally need to give up quality to get quality - As much as I would love to see this as a straight RFA transaction, I can't see that happening for us - or any other club for that matter.

If you read this week that Hawthorn’s ahead in the race for Gold Coast star Tom Lynch, and that Alex Rance wonders if it would be a good ideato get the Suns co-captain to Richmond, you’d be thinking it’s a done deal. And it almost is.

But not to the Hawks.

Fact is, the Tigers are in the box seat at the moment and looking good to get the 25-year-old’s signature.

There’s a lot of water to go under the Punt Road bridge yet, and Suns fans – all 17 of you – shouldn’t give up hope Lynch will stay at Gold Coast, but Richmond has well and truly got one hand on the prize while the other hand is feeling around under the sofa cushions trying to find any loose change that Dusty might have dropped.

100% agree
