The rule is a shit one and the MRO interpretation of it makes it even more farcical. You either want that action out of the game or you don’t. Once they decided that they didn’t want players jumping to spoil and landing on the oncoming kicker, they are then obligated to charge obvious cases of it like this. Giving out a minor fine isn’t deterring anyone.

So you want players suspended for leaping for a smother and knocking someone on the shoulder ??

It would be a first.

No, I think the rule is ridiculous and he shouldn’t be penalised at all. The afl think differently though and they made a very clear rule to stop it. Now they have that rule in place, this very clear example of a player breaking it should have been punished.

My opinion is he got the fine because the smother and subsequent collision was a bit reckless. The AFL don't want players charging head on at other players to smother and then botching it and hurting them.

It was nothing more that a fine because his reasonable steps included ensuring he hit the shoulder, not the head (I didn't realise he missed the head until I just watched a replay then)

Seems a pretty reasonable outcome all in all though many might disagree.
In what way did he take steps to ensure he hit the shoulder and not the head. Isn’t he just lucky that that’s what happened?

If he did nothing wrong as everyone at Geelong has said why is he getting a fine? Also why did he need to jump in the air to smother and what are these ‘reasonable steps’ he took to avoid the collision? Don’t jump down my throat, I’m just asking.

Kind of like Melbourne getting penalised for not tanking. The AFL makes shit up.

If that was Toby Greene we all know he is getting 2 weeks.

Like earlier in the year when Toby Greene left the ground to stop Reef McInnes hand balling over the top and kneed him in the ribs and didn’t get cited.

At least try and think before you write this stuff.

Great, so AFL has proven their corruption/ineptitude is real and owe Alex Witherden a written apology.

Very similar to the Maynard v Brayshaw incident except Stewart collected Wines head with his hip, not his shoulder. You could say this incident won't end a player's career but it wasn't just the Maynard collision that caused Brayshaw's retirement, it was the accumulation of concussions.

What say the collective brains of Bigfooty, all 7 of you?
Better luck next time, Falcon 🤣

Just let him off AFL

Unless you like being in the media all week discussing the minutiae of the case UNTIL he gets off on appeal.

Good bloke Tommy Stewart just really clumsy, all the time. Would never do anything intentional. He’s just coincidentally involved in hits like this (all the time). Such a good bloke. Just ask his coach.

Stewart didnt hit him in the ribs. But nice attempted deflection

Attempted what? You attempted to say that another player doing what Stewart did, would get a suspension. Well Greene as far as I’m aware hasn’t done what Stewart has done, so you’re attempting to speculate. I found an example of him attracting scrutiny for leading with his knee into an opponent which had a number of people questioning and suggesting that perhaps he SHOULD be sanctioned.

And he wasn’t.

And he was attempting the same action as Stewart: leaving the ground to stop an over the top handball. So it’s an almost identical footballing action, which resulted in him leading with a knee.

You haven’t made a very convincing case that ‘if Toby Greene had left the ground and collected someone while trying to effect a handball over the top, he would be suspended.’

No, they didnt make a rule about players jumping to smother and knocking someone on the shoulder, they made a rule about jumping up and hitting the head and concussing. Neither happened

Where did he think he should have gone to get the ball that Wines was hand passing over him - to ground? F**k I genuinely question what goes through the heads of some people when they post this stuff sometimes
The point is you can't use "But I was going for the ball" as an excuse to clatter into someone's head any more. It could be the perfect smother, its irrelevant if he also lands on Wine's head.
Who will be taking it to the tribunal?
Fair cop. I thought it was line ball between a week and a fine based on impact.

Why would anyone be suspended for knocking the shoulder?? Suspension is head contact and or concussion. It would be an AFL first if a player got suspended for knocking the shoulder without a concussion
