I was just looking over the DJ Lists top DJ’s and have notice a few names that I can honestly say do not ring a bell. Tiesto, Deadmau5, Armin etc are of course the nrom on this list but DJ’s like Hernan Cattaneo, Masoud and Umek have never found a place on my Ipod.
These unknowns (to me anyway) are pushing the likes of Marco V, Wolfgang Gartner, John O’Callaghan and Dubfire, who I thought were more established DJ’s, to the outer.
Obviously I am looking at this from an Aussie prespective, and understand that some DJ’s will have more exposure than others depending on who makes the trip down here for the festival season, etc. But I can honestly say I have never heard an original track from any of the DJ’s mentioned.

What I want to know is who you think are the best 10 (or more if you wish to expand) DJ’s that you have seen or heard in Oz.

For me:
Tiesto
Deadmau5
Axwell
Boyze Noize
Steve Angello
Laidback Luke
Sven Vath
Bloody Beatroots
Paul Van Dyke
Ferry Corsten.
Not necessarily in that order.

For the record, Tiesto’s Elemants of Life tour was the best set I have ever seen.

I never bought into the Tiesto hype, and deadmau5 is definitely overrated in my books, as are the SHM, although they do produce some very good stuff.

Some of my favourite overseas:
Wolfgang Gartner

Bart B More
Mark Knight
Carl Kennedy (I've seen this guy play in front of an empty dancefloor, purely because he refused to play anything remotely commercial)
Tommie Sunshine
Plump DJs
Armand Van Helden
Dave Spoon
Sebastien Leger
DJ Spinna
A-Trak
Adam K
Tocadisco
EDX
John Dahlback
Kaskade
Shinichi Osawa (Mondo Grosso)

And locally:
Bass Kleph
Sam La More
The Aston Shuffle
Acid Jacks
Raye Antonelli
Goodwill (sometimes)
Mind Electric
Hess

But my absolute favourite would have to be either Gilles Peterson or Mark Farina. For me, they're just the best side of House music.

Love Wolfgang Gartner.
I never really liked Tiesto until I saw his Elemants of Life tour and have been hooked ever since.
The Swedish House Mafia make some awesome tracks, Axwell ripped it up at Stereo, and 'it's true' was my ring tone for about a year.

Hernan Cattaneo and Umek are all class, Hernan especially, one of my fav djs. Top 10 would be something like this (in no order)

Hernan Cattaneo
Joris Voorn
Henry Saiz
James Zabiela
Nic Fianciulli
Eric Prydz
Markus Schulz
Sander Van Doorn
Jerome Isma-Ae
Booka Shade (not really djs, but then again neither is deadmau5 or henry saiz)

I've gotta say, I found the SHM's collective tracks incredibly underwhelming for a trio with such production talent. I think the work Angello & Ingrosso have done, both together and without Axwell, is better and more interesting than what they've done as a trio.

Cattaneo and Umek are very well established, don't worry about that.

DJ =/= producer, but here's Umek's most popular recent release. Used to be hard techno though, so not surprised you haven't heard of him.

Cattaneo's Ministry mag mix from years ago is one of my favourite mixes of any kind.

What I want to know is who you think are the best 10 (or more if you wish to expand) DJ’s that you have seen or heard in Oz.

As for the best DJs I've seen - this would be close to top 10 in order

John '00' Flemming - amazing set, always quality
Hybrid - probably the best night I've been to
James Zabiela
Tiesto was great at two Tribes back in 2002(3?) but there's no way I would go to a Tiesto 12 hour thing or 'tour'.
David Guetta - I know, he's $$$ now, but back in 2006 saw him at Future and in the sunny afternoon this guy was brilliant.
Mauro Picotto
James Lavelle
Paul van Dyk
Adam Freeland
16 Bit Lolitas

Armin has always been average IMO, never really impressed me.

I know that Hernan and Umek would be established, and are obviously rated fairly highly around the world too, it was just that to me, I would have thought that some other DJ's were more worthy of the accolades. But like I said im basing that on the fact that I have never seen or heard one of there sets. Until now.

Yeah have to agree with you on the Armin thing. I never really understood why he was rated so highly. He has done some good things but I wouldnt rate him as highly as some others.

100% agree with you on Guetta, I saw him at Summerdayze in 07' or 08' and thought he was awesome. Saw him last year at Future and wasn't really impressed, way to commercial for my taste now.

Also, if you like John Flemming, he uploads a set on Digitally Imported every month, they are always good to listen to.

Thanks for posting the Umek track, not bad. I have been vigourusly downloading tracks by Hernan, Umek and Mousad and have to say I like most of what im hearing. Some of Hernan's stuff sounds a bit like Frankie Knuckles. Some of Umek's stuff is a little bit Techno for me, but it not to bad. I recognise a few of his tracks though, John Digweed played a couple of his tracks at Stereo last year (Only remember because I downloaded his set)

Your probably right, most of there stuff is individual anyway. And as a trio they have only really done a few songs, and you could almost count there collaborations on your fingers. So for me, when I think of SHM I think more of their individual stuff than what they have done as a group. I think their Album Until One really reflects this.

Umek played at Stereo last year too ;)

Well, ill be a monkeys uncle. Kinda annoyed now, I really want to see one of his sets. Do you know which stage he was on? Im assuming he would have been playing a bit later probably around the same time as Axwell or Deadmau5 which is probably why I didnt pay to much attention, but i could be wrong.
Hopefully he comes back, because I am fairly keen to see what he is like live. I'll have to pay more attention to the set line ups from now on. Thanks for the info.

He was on around the same time as Axwell, maybe a little earlier, not 100% sure. He was in the techno shed where Marco Carola played too. Can't remember the name of the stage.

You can find heaps of sets here, pretty sure theres some Umek in there somwhere:

Id say you are looking at it form a Trance perspective as opposed to an Aussie perspective. Hernan Cattaneo (my favourite DJ) is as good as it gets from a Prog House perspective and has been one of the top DJs in the world for a long long time and is much more "established" than gimmicks like deadflop or guys like J'OC or Wolfgang.

Umek has been tearing the world apart with his techno based sets for the last couple of years.

Id say broaden your horizons. Theres much more out there than cheesy predictable trance.

Thats why i'm here, I wanted to know more about these guys, and find out what other people are listening too. There is alot of crap out there, and rather than shift through it I thought i'd get the low down on whats worth listening too.
I like progressive house, but I just never paid to much attention to Hernan, I like guys like John Holden, John Digweed and Dave Seaman. Now that I have started listening to Hernan and Umek I realise that I have heard alot of there stuff before. I just never gave them credit. I kinda followed alot of guys like Sasha, Above and Beyond and Marcus Schulz from Progessive house into trance when I started listening to house and sorta stuck with it.

Back about 10 years ago, Armin was great. A lot his early productions and DJ sets were classics. Then he got addicted to girl vocal trance and made millions. I still download his ASOT sets once a month or so just to see what hes playing.

Favourite DJs now:
Sasha le Monnier
Ellke Kleijn
Sven Vath
Dubfunk
Jody Wisternoff
Dana Bergquist
Henry Saiz
Markus Schulz
Llupa

All time:
Hernan Cattaneo
LTJ Bukem
Richie Hawtin
John Digweed
James Zabiela
James Holden (best set ive seen & best club night ive ever been to)
Plump DJs
Sander Kleinenberg
Sander Van Doorn
Kasey Taylor
Lucien Foort
Derrick May
Makoto
Jeff Mills
Dimitri From Paris

Try getting your hands on Hernans South America compilation, and some of his Renaissance mixes. He also used to have a weekly radio show on Metrodance FM which is wort checking out if you can get your hands on some of those sets.

Yeah alot of DJ's these days are moving into more mainstream sounds to make money. When I first started listening to house I loved Armin, I still enjoy his sets but not as much as I used to. Dave Guetta is the best example, 3 or 4 years ago I really enjoyed some of his sets at festivals but now he just plays pop music.
Im worried where Tiesto is moving into a different genre as well, Elemants of Life was a great trance album, but he seems to be moving away from Trance and into something different with Kaladiescope.

Ill try and get my hands on the South American Compilation. I have got a couple of his sets which im listening to atm but I wouldn't mind getting some of his older stuff as well, when did he do the mixes for Metrodance? Ill have to do some research.

Did you get a chnace to see John Digweed at Future last year. Awesome.
