In my 30 years of following the HFC the top 10 players are:

1. Matthews ( best ever seen, had it all )
2. Dunstall ( best since Lethal )
3. Platten ( best small man in the AFL for over 10 years)
4. Knights ( sensational talent, a star at both ends )
5. Jarman ( footskills had to be seen to be believed. Great tackler and reader of game also )
6. Tuck ( great running player with superb skill level. Tough too )
7. Ayres ( smart, physical big occasion player. Great defender who could be thrown in the middle with much success )
8. Brereton ( ridiculously gifted KPP. Capable of winning big games on his own. Invaluable physicality cut him down )
9. Buckenara ( for a bloke who looked like an accountant he sure destroyed a lot of top defenders. Another big occasion player )
10. Crawford ( fearless small man who simply breaks the hearts of his opponents with amazing fitness. Skills underrated too )

Tuck at 2 and no Chris Mew??? Controversial.

For what its worth heres my 10

1/ Lethal. Absolutely no argument, best player of all time

2/ Dunstall. Best hands in the game. Great defensive side as well as all those goals

3/ Knights. Poetry in motion. Very unlucky not to be a Brownlow medalist. Losing by 3 votes one year when he broke a collarbone and missed 7 games

4/ Brereton, undersized for CHF, But enormous ticker as well as class. Very intimidating. Dont undervalue his importance because of his media work now

5/ Tuck. Consistent, courageous, skillful, durable and a champion bloke

6/ Platten. Thank god Carlton didnt get him

7/ Langford. How i wish i could have his physique!

8/ Mew. Solid year in year out

9/ Crawford. Worked harder than any footballer to achieve the maximum from his ability

10/ K Moore. cant remember him getting flogged to often and he lined up against the best . McKenna, Wade etc

1-Lethal
2-Dermie
3-Jars
4-Dipper
5-Fish
6-Conan
7-Piggy
8-Kennedy jnr
9-Bucky
10-Rat

Actually that's not really in order either, apart from Mathews.

seems a lot of us liked watching the sublime skills of darren jarman......... :D

1. Lethal(toughest and best ever)
2. Dunstall( best full-forward since Hudson)
3. Brereton(big game player.Made teammates walk tall)
4. Ayres (best big game player I've ever seen. Was called Conan for a reason)
5. Knights(superstar.Should have 2 brownlows)
6. Langford(Clark Kent)
7. Platten(dynamo. Bottom of every pack.Great in and under player)
8. Buckenara(awesome HFF.Best shot at goal ever seen)
9. Jarman(skills to burn.Disappointed he went back home though)
10. Dipierdomenico (also a great big game player. The Enforcer.)
*apologies to Crawford. Could have probably taken at least 10th spot.
**only rated players I have seen. Otherwise would have had Peter Hudson at #2. The greatest full-forward of all time. Kicked high 100+ goals year after year (on wet, boggy grounds too where the ball didn't whizz back and forth).

This is a great idea for a thread! God you've got some great names to choose from.

This is my opinion based as a non-Hawthorn supporter, and one who, though has the benefit of (some) age, has only limited experience of watching Hawthorn over the years. Much of this will have to do with my childhood impressions and/or my memory of Hawthorn players when I was growing up. I follow another team, which, for a period of about ten years, used to crap ourselves when playing Hawthorn (see if you can guess who that might be).

1) Dunstall.
Kicked over a thousand goals before Lockett did. Year in and year out the best full forward in the league. A model of consistency. The consummate professional. A great forward in a great team (remember the other guy played for St Kilda). When he didn't kick goals, he assisted. (Note: I never saw Peter Hudson.)

2) Matthews.
Probably the best player of all time, but I can only comment on when I sporadically saw him, during the late seventies up to his retirement. His record of Best and Fairests speaks for itself. When I was growing up he was amongst the favourites for the Brownlow every year. He had to settle for winning Hawthorn Best and Fairests instead.

3) Ayres.
A consistently good player. Solid and reliable in defence for a long time. Could be moved into the centre when needed as he showed to devastating effect in a particular game in 1989 (not the Grand Final) which I had the misfortune of suffering.

4) Platten.
Altogether the best small man of the 1980s. Other rovers were compared to him. (You could swap this placement with number (3), in this assessment.)

5) Knights.
Growing up in the seventies this guy was one of the superstars. Just a fantastic leap, blonde, spectacular marks.....Only later on did I discover what an attacking CHB he was. One of the stars of a great mid-Seventies Hawthorn side.

6) Dipierdomenico.
A buffoon now, but one of the great tough workers in the day. An intimidating, ferocious player. He won the game, and was best on ground in one of the best games I've ever been lucky enough to see: the 1984 semi-final against Essendon.

7) Brereton.
Not as good as he says he is, but on his day you could put him at number one of this list. Probably should be higher on this list. He was courageous, I actually saw him win several games.

8) Crawford.
Hardly ever does anything wrong. A standout in a sometimes poor side. Good vision, running capacity. Often let down by the sub-standard ability/skills of his teamates. I've seen him be BOG in a badly losing and winning side.

9) Langford.
Imperious and impervious. One of the great full backs of the eighties. Despite being a springboard for some of the best marks of the period, he was, unfortunately, often the better player on the day.

10) Buckenara.
Sublimely skilled and agile. Surprisingly adept at a lot of facets. Supreme among a crew of talented bit players in the Hawthorn sides of the eighties. Would have been a good player in any side, unlike some of similar ilk who disappeared after Hawthorn ceased to be a force (see Morrissey, Dear, Pritchard, and any number of people who succeeded some of those great numbers).

Apologies to Jarman, Allen, Mew, Moncrieff, Collins, that is all.

There is matthews then there is daylight. That's how good he was, even allowing for some damn fine footballers like Dunstall, Ayres, Brereton, Knights, Moore, Scott, Hendrie, Buckenara, Jarman, Crawford, Mew, Langford, Hall, Dipper and a bloke called Tuck that sort of went alright for more games than anyone in history too. ;)

Damn I was spoilt.

Wouldn't mind getting spoilt like it again either.

I love Crawf but in the 30 years I've supported Hawthorn he wouldn't come near a top ten position. Hawthorn has had far too many good players. If Crawf with us in the 80's we would've been just another player, sorry but true

No order

Matthews
Tuck
Ayres
Derm
Bunghole
Kanga
Peter Hudson (no way Paul but by God did Dad tech him to kick)
Crimo
Knights
Rat

Other players who I could've named Wallace  , Kanga, Eade, Pritch, Scott, Dippier (would have this man in my favourite Hawthorn team because he was a train) Condo, Bucky, Jars, PC too many more to name.

This is the hardest thread I think I've ever seen on this board.

All watched from the MCC members ;)

Crawford would have been a champion in any era. Granted, it is more pronounced now because he is in a very average team but in no team in history would he have been just another player. Is not one of our better captains if you think back through some past names but is a champion player nonetheless.

I love Crawf but he ain't in the same class as a Platten or Jarman. Sorry but he'd be lucky to make top 20

I think he is in the same class as Platten and Jarman. Just because he's playing in a terrible era shouldn't detract from him. He would have been a class act in any Hawthorn teams from the 70's and 80's.

Seriously where would've Crawford played? Rover? doubt it Platten in his prime ran all day. I have my doubts

Wing, Centre, goal kicking small forward ..... plenty of other spots on the field you know.

give me a break!!!!!!

crawford would have 2 be one of the fittest players ever 2 play the game. been clocked 2 run close 2 20kilometers a game. seriously platten was a gun gun player 4 us but crawf is also in this category. has 1 brownlow and very unlucky not 2 have 2. multiple best and fairest winnner, geez ur a hard man if u dont think crawford is one of our elite.

Never ceases to amaze me how truly underrated Crawford is, even by his own supporters. A shame, but in time I believe he'll be remembered as the champion he has been in such an ordinary side.

While Shane suffers for not having been part of the 80s dominance, keep in mind the fact that he has single handedly carried a side for many years. How any one of those champions from previous eras would have managed as the sole star instead of one of 15 will never be known. I doubt too many would have coped better than Crawf though.

Anyway, I will only count my viewing and not that of the record books:

1. Dunstall
2. Ayres
3. Brereton
4. Crawford
5. Langford
6. Mathews (only got the tail end, sadly)
7. Platten
8. Jarman (would have been higher if he stayed)
9. Mew
10. Buckenara
