Yep - He's one of my picks for the year. Looks like a very, very solid player.

Also comfortably takes the title of "best name in the draft this year", much like Steele Sidebottom last year, and Patrick Dangerfield the year before.

haha yep Maverick has got to be the coolest name out.. i remember when were calling during the champs this year at the dome we labelled him "top gun".. :p

a young promising footballer who is 16 has already had reserves games as a mid has been placed in critical condition. One of my mates who knows him well told me he has a 50/50 chance of survival. The crash was brought about by drink driving (my mate opted not go in the car with the driver who is the young footy player). Such a waste if he doesn't make it, i always thought he'd easily play AFL one day.

just on a side note, Gippsland Power has got 12 members in the Vic Country squad this year. phenomenal effort. had only 5 or 6 last season IIRC. (being Heath, Heyne, Carr, Stevens and Butcher) may have forgotten someone but i don't think i have

Jack Weston Koby Stevens John Butcher Mitch Golby Nathan Vardy Edward Carr Nick Sing Brayden Salton Dyson Heppell

Only 9 Bourky - straight off the invite list

David Swallow?

A name for 2010.

vandelay - quick question - do you know whether or not Trent McKenzie & Dylan Conway are eligible this year?

2010 names as well.

A good way to work out who is eligible is to remember that anyone that played Div 1 Under 16 Champs last year is too young.

How do you rate yong Mitch Marsh, is he being drafted this year or the next?

He is eleigible but I didn't really consider him for this list because I have no idea if he's going to nominate with his cricket interest. A mate of mine says that the Warriors have snared him, but I don't know how accurate that is.

From what I've seen of him, I think he's in a similar bucket to the one Robbie Tarrant fell into a few years ago. Everyone knows who is because of his name, he's got a nice physique, he just hasn't performed on anything like a consistent basis yet.

If he chooses football, or even if he only decides to play in the Champs, he'll be interesting watching.

wont be long before he gets a Warriors start. depending on how they end the year I suspect they will throw the 'carrot' in front of him

Already thrown it I thought Snoop.
In fact, just took this off the Warriors website, thought he was on a "rookie contract" but maybe it's a full contract?:
"The youngest player to receive a state contract for 2008-09 and joins older brother Shaun in the Retravision Warriors squad. A member of WA's National Under 17 and 19 Championship teams last summer, and smashed 165 for Fremantle in a Carlton Mid Colts one-day match against Scarborough, an innings that contained an astonishing 16 sixes and seven fours. In a brilliant 2007-08 Darlot Cup campaign for Wesley College, he skippered his school to the title without dropping a game, and broke the record for most runs in a season (739 at 105.57), including a double-century against Christ Church Grammar School. A multi-talented sportsman, he also represented Western Australia at the AFL National Under 18 Championships in 2008."

Vandelay, great read and glad to see Mitch Duncan is rated by some over East.

there you go. been playing 2nd XI and dont think he has set the world on fire. was also reading his old man is keener for him to go cricket but feels he has a way to go. be amazed if he doesnt pick cricket.

Absolutely.

Saw Dylan Conway up against Sandy last year and was really impressed. Didn't see any of the Under 16 Champs, but he was supposedly very impressive there as well.

I think I've seen the best and worst of Trent McKenzie, but he does some very nice things. He would've been eligible before the rule change, but I think the change really works in his favour, he'll really benefit from another year if development.

Daniel Talia from Calder would be a real chance if he has luck. Finished off the year superbly at chf and was good at chb in the national u/16 champs.
A smokey for me is also a cannon in Jake Carlisle. i watched Calder v Bendigo last round last year and he has a very impressive leap and is very clean with his hands.

Thanks for the read Vandelay.

Being a realistic Demons supporter I think we will struggle again this year. Which could give us a priority pick & the opportunity to snaffle two of these young guns should we not win 5 games or more this year.

From your write up, I would like to get our hands on Scully & Butcher.

Talia's on my radar. For pure athleticism alone he's appealing.

Interesting call with Carlisle, don't know much about him at all, he's a big boy isn't he?

I take it you're a Cannons fan?

Great thread Vandelay
Can i have some info i Charlie sharples
and why did'nt he get drafted last year??

Picking the next AFL stars

Geelong midfielders Callum Bartlett, 17, and Allen Christensen, 17, are being touted as possible top 10 picks.

Christensen was hampered by a groin complaint at the weekend, but Bartlett excelled in the vertical jump and agility tests.

Another midfielder, Dandenong's Ryan Bastinac, 17, outperformed all of his teammates in the beep test with a score of 15.1.

Western Jets key position players Kyle Hartigan, 17, and Jack Fitzpatrick, 17, also impressed.

A 196cm key forward, Fitzpatrick recorded the fastest 20m sprint time of any of his teammates -- 2.89sec.

Hartigan's movement was also impressive for a 194cm defender and he was fifth in his club's agility testing.
I'll **** in my **** if we get Fitzpatrick.

I doubt that we'll be that poor this year.

We'll probably draft another midfielder.
