According to this article...

http://www.kangaroos.com.au/season2008/news/newsarticle/tabid/4912/newsid/83655/default.aspx

The 6 players most likely to be drafted first (in no particular order) are...

John Butcher
Ben Cunnington
Anthony Morabito
Gary Rohan
Tom Scully
Jack Trengrove

As we are most likely to be pick 5 or 6, would that net us Butcher or Cunnington?

I'd of thought Kane lucas to be one of these above cunnington or rohan

i'd like any of lucas cunnington rohan due to the fact scully moribito trengove will be gone . I doubt we'd take butcher having plenty of talls.

Lucas must have dropped off that means.

If that's the case, i would go after Rohan. The guy has shot from no where and his pace is truly incredible.

That is if we cant land Trengove.

Heard from a reliable source within AFL Vic's development that the view of this year's draft is that it's not deep at all. He said there's really only 3 kids who are quality and after this it's a bit of a lottery.

Pick 5 for us looks likely, I hope we pull one of out of the bag.

We got Ziebell last year and that seems like its probably going to pay big dividends.

Would love to see trenters go to us but would be happy with any of the midfielders listed in top 5 i think

I know that looking at past draft failures and trades that have proven costly means we are unfairly focused on this draft .

Where these guys are picked is not their fault.

All we can expect of them is to maximise their talent and learn and develop as players as quickly as possible.

Certainly the focus is also on 20-22 year olds playing consistent footy at the next level down withcood attitudes.

Yet we at NM still dream of a superstar in the draft cos we are a bit short of elite talent .

ATM, you'll think that the ladder will stay as it is:

Melb vs Saints
Freo vs Geelong
West Coast vs Richmond
North vs Port

1. Melbourne 16 points
2. Richmond 22 points
3. Fremantle 24 points
4. North Mel 30 points
5. West Cst 32 points

Melb said that they'll definately be getting Scully at No.1 yesterday.

1. Melbourne (SCULLY)
2. Melbourne (BUTCHER/TRENGOVE)
3. Richmond (BUTCHER/TRENGOVE)
4. Fremantle (MORABITO/LUCAS)
5. North Melbourne (LUCAS/ROHAN/CUNNINGTON)
6. West Coast (LUCAS/....)

I reckon the key for us to go outside the circle of the TAC Cup and find some raw talent – that’s where you can utilize your draft picks when the draft isn’t deep. I’m sure North will go for a midfielder with their first pick – someone with Pace and Skill – who that is we wont know until we find out who the other clubs pick – I reckon Melbourne will use their first 2 picks to get obviously scully and trengrove.

That's looking likely, but I reckon they'll regret it long term. Whilst Scully/Trengove will do well for them and have an immediate impact, their forward line has some real concerns, with Watts being their only real prospect.

Surely they'd be better served to go Scully and Butcher with their picks.

But it's Melbourne, so who knows.

I'm just guessing here (isn't everybody?) but if Melbourne doesn't pick Butcher, it wouldn't surprise at all to see Richmond let him go as they are masturbating over their quality forwards in Riewoldt/Post/Morton. And then Freo may well pick a WAlien. So there's an outside chance Butcher will still be available at 5.

As much as I'd love to cheer for a bloke named Cunnington, anyone listed as a "utility" is surely a mid-sized, mid-paced flanker. I think we're fairly well stocked up in that type.

Even if Butcher was available at our pick, i'm not so sure he'd be out best available option. We need midfielders more than we need another young KPP prospect who we won't see on the park for 2-3 years.

More Ziebell/Anthony. Less Tarrant/JoSmith/Hansen

But do you really think our priority should be a marking forward?

Certainly if he's comfortably a better prospect than the next midfielder. After all, we hope for a Jack Ziebell type, but what if we are confronted with a Sam Power? I'd much prefer a solid prospect key forward than a so-so midfielder. One thing I think we can agree on... no more flankers from the first round thanks.

Windsock

Right now i think our rucks and our defenders are looking really good and will improve dramatically over the next 4 years.

Our midfield has swallow, anthony, ziebell with harvey to lead them for a couple of years before retiring to the forward pocket for 6 years.

Our tall forwards are ok without being great and we could do with someone else there but i think we need a midfielder to grow. If i had enough confidence in Tarrents shoulders i wouldnt be worried.

I think we should trade for a couple of picks, grab 2-3 midfielders (Would love to find another anthony at pick 43) and a couple of forwards we can develop to be ready in 2011.

Lets just see how this panns out! if we get to pick 5 and they have already taken most of the great midfielders i think we need to take bucher as much as it hurts to not get a solid midfielder i think bucher has to be taken over what will be available after that.

You only get so many chances at getting tall KP prospects, you take them when they present. there are other guys like Anthony out there I'm not sure there are too many young talls that haven't been found yet. Look at were all the gun forwards were drafted, not many outside the top 5 except farther sons.

Really the question is How Good is Butcher??????????????

Agree with this. I'm for best available (true) midfielder or KPF. No doubt we need more midfield class but we were also decimated by injury this year. We may find the midfield is a bit stronger with a full year from Wells, Harvey and Ziebell & Anthony on a real pre season. If the best player is a big forward and the gap to the next midfielder is big then take the forward. All that being said, I think it's pretty hard to pick good forwards sometimes as big guys can overperform in youth football. Agility, good football brain and real footskills are the traits that are musts. Most guys can put on weight and learn the teams patterns etc.

2 scenarios for mine

1) Trade heavily especially with Gold Coast and take Butcher if available
2) Take best available Midfielder even if a ranga/crow eater

Only been 3 drafts in 15 years where a Gun KP forward has gone high.
The potential of next years KP players in the draft may come into it for trading with GC and the possibility of being left with the poormans Tarrant/Power/Swallow.
Probably best just to take the best mid then hope a few trades for picks can be done down the track for a ruck/fp/hb.

Lets assume that Brad Scott has a game plan in mind....considering he came from a side that arguably has based its success on a balanced midfield and not match winning KPPs he might try to replicate it....Id expect hiim to want to build up his midfield...

I'd love to know who wrote that article.

If it's a North based article and not an AFL one, one would assume Bryce Lewis' opinion has come across, and thus the suggested top 6 in the article would be how North rank them.

If not, then we really have no idea who we rate and won't have a chance in hell of knowing who we're going to pick until draft day.

Either way, one of Morabito/Trengove/Butcher would be ideal - whether or not any of them are available, we'll just have to wait and see.

Been said before somewhere but with muppets like Carltank/Dogs/Pies etc using the backdoor approach to building a premiership side other sides stocks of KP defenders may start to dwindle and be ripe for a good ole fashioned rogering by a few tall forwards in a few years. Scott has little choice but to place emphasis on our rucks/talls and we have bigger issues with crowds/history of success than the Pies and should be looking at 'Buddy' types in the near future.
