Howard has the potential to be a Guera-like player out of the backline. However, you can improve a player's skills and fitness but not sure if you can improve their hardness or awareness.
Disagree completely - Guerra has a natural hardness to his game (at St Kilda he was the "cannon-bald").
Howard doesn't have that hardness - it's a secondary reaction, not instinct.

I also don't see the pace Howard has - excellent endurance yes, but he's slow. He has an excellent kick in space, but it can be hit or miss under pressure and he has the inexplicable ability to have one major howler per game, it's Cam Wight-esque. He laso doesn;t put much body-pressure on his opponent when played inthe backline which doesn't translate well to AFL level.

If he proves me wrong, great, but there are a number of deficiencies to overcome in his game which puts him behind the 8-ball.

Jeremy Laidler walks from Carlton.

Also delisted are Pat McCarthy, Luke Mitchell, Marcus Davies, Aaron Joseph, Fraser Dale, Rhys O'Keefe and Andrew Collins.

I liked what I saw of McCarthy last year. Don't think I'd pick him up but personally I thought he was worth persisting with.

So if he shaved his head he COULD be Guerra, AND the 8=ball.

Dale and Mitchell interest me as rookie pick ups.

I was talking to CG on here the other day about Mitchell. Apparently shoulder injuries have really hurt his marking ability like Cordy.

Not sure I see much in Dale.

Dude, I'm agreeing with you!

My post suggested I was 'not sure' if you can improve a player's hardness or awareness, and I don't think Howard has either of these.

His off field stuff is over exaggerated. The only difference between him and 80% of the other draftee's is the photos of him smoking and drinking were posted on social media.
... and his pupils were the size of saucers.

If he's cleaned up his act then great - hopefully the club make a call on what they know and not simply reputation.

wowser, Carlton are going to be using 6th-7th round draft picks with that many changes
look for them to be aggressive in the free agent period

Three of them are rookies.

I assume Betts will go and they'll pick up Daisy. Then they may get a few two-for-one deals.

I highly doubt we'd draft Garlett. But I would have thought the risk is worth a low pick and that a 'fatherly' coach like BMac is exactly what he needs. It's a pity because if he was clean off field I wouldn't have hesitated to use a top 10 pick on him last year as well as this year

Plus I reckon they will trade one of Warnnock/Hampson, Possibly Yarren and Scotland retire too. God knows how Duigan survived given he is 28-29 and played 2-3 games for year, surely 1 decent final hasn't saved him.

Hampson is surely GWS bound given they missed out on Bellchambers. Warnock isn't a #1 ruckman but he's not bad support for Kreuzer. Yarran will go but I think Scotland will stay on.

They may think they can get something for Duigan.

He's definitely been improving his hardness, he was showing that during the year in the vfl.
His last 4-5 weeks though

I bloody well hope that we don't draft Gartlett, he'll undo two years of hard work by Macca in building a club culture.

You may be right, but I'd be disappointed if we didn't at least do due diligence. He'd likely be a better player than 80% of players taken after pick 15, and several within the top 15. If he has settled down and matured he's worth a second-third round pick easily - but that's a big if.

Totally fine dannnnn, and a lot of people have that opinion of Howard. I don't. But my point is more a philosophical one. It's a fine balance between keeping enough depth players (ie no upside) and ensuring we have enough kids with potential (whether you think that should be a Jong, Roberts, Howard, Tutt, whoever) who may go past an Addison type if given time.

I agree totally with Dannnn , given up a long time ago on Howard and with his analysis.
You don't keep these types just for depth , because there will dozens of players around that will give you more so called depth.
For all of Addisons limitations, at least he has some idea of how to play the game.

Is anyone else having trouble reading BF in the last two days. I am getting the BF logo as a non faint watermark behind every quoted piece making it impossible to read. Is it just me?
I've had some weird stuff happening with email notifications since yesterday. Even when I have turned them off they keep appearing like zombies.

That could be appropriate now that I think about it.

Would you chase yarran dannnnnn?

I think he'd cost more than he's worth. I don't like one-way runners as a rule of thumb. Start taking one-way runners and you end up like Collingwood: a team that looks incredible on paper but struggles in practice. I would rather go after a Docherty or just pick up a running half back (or a midfielder who starts there) in the draft.

I think Howard's kicking is overrated. It looks good technically, but I haven't seem him be particularly damaging with it. I'd much rather the ball be in the hands of a player like Dahlhaus who isn't a "textbook" kick, but is much more damaging with it.
