The problem being that you would probably need to offer Menzel 2 years and that he would probably do his ACL week 3 of pre season # 1 knowing our luck. Then everyone is cooked.

I don't think you would though. Saints withdrew their 2 year offer and the Cats dropped the price on their 1 year deal. If we have the spare cash in the cap and have to pay the minimum anyway, I'm confident we could get him on a 1 year deal on decent money. I think a one year $350-400K deal would probably get him over, especially if the reports are true and he might be a bit annoyed at the Cats. if he turns it down, no biggie.

Saying that though, I don't think we should pursue him if we land Wingard. With Picken / Wingard / Lloyd and then the young guys like Dale, Greene etc, we probably have enough depth there now.

How did he suffer? When recruited we were told 2-3 years. He’s learning the craft and building his body up to withstand the rigours of AFL footy.
I guess we could have gone down the Carlton/Kruezer path and burnt out a gun. I’m sure the club had discussions with him prior to drafting and their vision for him. Just need to be patient as I don’t see him as the saviour for another couple of years if he ever is. Young talls take time and some don’t come good at all whilst others not until mid to late 20’s.

Menzel is a higher injury risk and can't/won't provide AFL standard defensive pressure. If he comes cheap in every aspect there are worse signings but at AFL-average salary that puts him at something approaching a priority which he shouldn't be.

Fair enough, the concerns with him are legit. Interested still if we can lure him over for cheap and Bev has a plan to maximise his strengths... I hope someone comes in with a 2 year deal on decent money for him, worked so hard to get back to playing and a lot worse players going around on more money than him. Deserves to bank a bit of $ after his testing few years.

So in other words, if a player that can’t get past them isn’t up to it, you’re necessarily saying Menzel and Lloyd mustn’t be that good either. I’d say your point supports the post you’re trying to oppose.

It’s simplistic anyway. Most players are recruited with the intention of giving them games so they will necessarily be granted some leeway in getting them (I’d argue Trengove and Crozier both got extended runs initially on this basis) so they will be ‘blocking’ a spot in that sense which is how I interpreted the post. Competition for a spot is great but maybe it makes sense to allow the players to develop in the seniors as well? It worked well for Richards in the end.

The theme that kept coming across to me anyway was how young the list is, how the young players carried a load not expected of them so early in their career and it was a year of transition.

Menzel is probably the complete opposite of what Bevo looks for in a player. On field work ethic, can play multiple positions, pressure. Menzel has none of that.

I applaud the man for his efforts getting back from numerous ACLs but no thanks.

Not that I want him but I prefer Menzel over Lloyd. At least he is a proven goal kicker and plays seniors.
Foward line pressure is overrated when you get the ball and kick goals.

I'm only interested in Menzel if someone can guarantee he'd kick the winning goal after the siren from a dubious free kick and even more dubious 50m penalty against Geelong at Etihad/Marvel. It would be amusing to see Scott's head explode so hard pieces of skull shrapnel would pierce the closed roof.

It would be a good start. I think compulsory suit and tie dress code for going to and from training and other club related events would be a good progression from there. Also could actually hire people to follow known rat packers and make sure they don't get into trouble or post inappropriate content on social media. Get the boys in line and the results will follow.

I think a curfew of 9pm for the known trouble makers would also be a good idea. Also i hate seeing tattoos on our players, id be shipping off any of the boys with tattoos asap
