That team might have been able to beat Carlton

Hoping we are looking at Podhajski, Jok, Clarke, Cavarra & Parker.

Jok more as a rookie but the others earlier. We need competition for senior spots and the rest of these guys are ready to play.
Jok is like a lot of the Sudanese players they are capable of a brilliant highlight, but tend to be a bit wooden when it
comes to the natural flow of football. Some of the Irish players tend to have that inherit flow of the game coming
from a gaelic football background, but even they struggle to be natural. I guess the AFL guys that play international
rules would look a bit wooden to the Irish fans.

The Irish rookie P.O’Inocchio was very wooden !

Feeling bullish about the draft.

The F/S deal on West jnr is very much like having a second 1st round draft pick because young West appears to be 1st round quality, just got to get the points together. A few on this board saying that it looks like the bid for West will most probably come at pick 19 from GWS. If that is so, then we use our first 2nd round pick and (like usual with my posts on the draft, correct me if I'm wrong) get a lot change back on our pick 32, dropping it back to 38 or thereabouts.

A key issue is if the bid on Khamis comes before our pick 45. If it slides past that, what a bag we should have.

I am also positive about our 2 trades. Duryea could make a lot of sense - release B Williams for midfield, etc and could also prevent us having to spend Lynch and Richards as deep defenders during the season. Lloyd? Why not, we need forwards and one of our reliables (Premiership Champion Dickson) looked to me last season like he may not have much impact in 2019. The stats clearly say that Dickson is a superior forward (higher goal average, 1.6 vs 1.2 and accuracy 3/4 vs 2/3) but still, maybe this will be Lloyd's year.

Also want to add, our two rookie upgrades, Gowers and Lynch look better than promising.

It is going to be a great bag of 9 and then 3 more rookies to add after that, nice.

Question: if Honeychurch doesn't get picked up by anyone else, would he be a good rookie choice? I'm thinking of injury coverage scenarios.

Hayes or Cavarro would be perfect rookies if they are not picked up early - including by us. We have a great track record of rookie revelations - but they each had somewhat of a chip on their shoulder that made them extremely hard workers - Morris too small etc. Gowers fits the bill - he is super strong and has worked the house down to get his chance. Are Hayes and Cavarro like that? If not - who is?

Definite no from me . By the way won't happen.
Schultz from Willy would be an up grade for starters.

Not a lot of natural forwards or goal scoring in our side at present if we are being honest

Just crack in and the goals will take care of themselves ;)

Although are forward forays were painful to watch and our coaching forward of centre seemingly all over the place, we did manage to debut 3 players 21 or younger last year who averaged a goal a game or better. Hopefully all progress naturally and become 30 goal + players this year.

I do think our forward woes are more to do with a dysfunctional forward plan and poor systems rather than a lack of talent.

It is interesting, Power and Austin have to try to suss out the interest from other clubs and evaluate how much we are prepared to pay, pickwise. I don't fancy their job.

To me, it is the pick 7 and 32 and 45 picks (assume we get West and Kharmis without using these) that are the make or break picks that will determine whether we aced this recruiting period or not. Of course, it will take time to tell and the proof of the pudding will be in the eating.

I like your optimism !!

I think we have some potential, but lack consistent output. We also (as you rightly say) don’t have the plans and systems, but I would extend on that and say we lack the skills to deliver to our advantage, or to take advantage of the chaos ball and that is partly due to a lack of pace up front, but also those innate forward skills/craft.

I’m encouraged by drafting of people like Richards and English - who have skills (amongst other attributes) - hopefully it continues this year.

Well I guess we can only get better? Maybe....

Gowers - tailed off a bit but looks to be useful

Dickson made a big difference when he was playing - with Lloyd we should have at least one experienced forward each game

Fergus did show something- naturally seem to find space and had a few shots each game

Schache was improving as the year went on

Boyd was carrying an injury and if settled gives us something. Even when he doesn’t mark he is hard to mark against

Lipinski, Dale and Richards have all shown multiple goal scoring capability

Strikes fear into opposition?..........ah No..... but mostly on the up so we can work with that.

May get Picken back but if not we don’t really have anyone who would truly bother a good backline. Menzel does that but it’s the injuries. Bont also but robbing Peter.

As you say natural forward instincts not a strength - Clay Smith has them. McLean maybe but cupboard a bit empty.
