So if Richards looks like he'll cover off that intercepting defender role (he's looked pretty good this year so far), do we think Williams makes it on the wing or we should be looking for someone there?

Also still fairly concerned about the small forward situation. Aside from Weightman I'm not sure who's in there from a best 22 perspective. Is the forward line when everyone's available Naughton, Bruce, JUH/Khamis/third tall, Weightman and then who else? VDM? McNeil? JJ?

JJ and a resting mid I reckon, or even West.

Jones and Bedendo played full time wing on the weekend which is really good, both have the potential there. For now though I love Williams on one and Hunter on the other. Still need a small forward, I think Jones ends up half forward/wing long term but he’s still not a deep crumbing forward.

I've liked Williams on the wing. Can get back and support in defence, is great defensively on the wing and if he gets his kicking boots on, could kick a couple a game.

I think West is showing plenty forward and will hopefully continue to get opportunities up forward with the view to go midfield. We also have, and I hope he can get back to his best, McLean who looked awesome when he got back last year and then done his knee in the VFL again.

Williams knows the defensive system too which helps the synergy.

As far as intercepting defenders go, couldnt Khamis do that once our forward line is under control?

If we had a fit and in form Naughty, Bruce and Marra, we dont really need Khamis in the forward line.

Sweet is outperforming all of them…. Perhaps our recruiters are not as terrible as we think? [emoji848]

We still need a KPD but I guess we did take one at pick 2, so I shouldn’t complain too much…. it’s just he is a bit young and we really need a senior one now.
The aforementioned rucks that some would've had us recruit is a rogues gallery of plodders and journeyman.

Its little wonder that we looked them over during the trade period and then went with the paper thin ruck stocks of plodders and journeyman that we had on hand.

Potentially, he could always take O'Brien's role if form permits. I would like to know where Khamis' tank currently sits because it would be a bit of a concern in defence. He's playing a very small amount of game time (less than 70%), something we don't usually see with defenders. The club may still be concerned about his ability late in games to sustain the fitness required to keep up with forwards.

Cordy played 67% game time last week. Guess you don’t want to carry too many of those types though

I think it also shows Bevo's reluctancy to play 3 genuine forwards on the field. Even when we do so, Bevo only runs two on the field at the same time. For 90% of the game, we either have Cordy or Buku on the bench, or Cordy in the ruck meaning we only have two tall forwards on the ground at once.

He did the same thing last year when we played Martin, English, Naughton & Bruce together. The majority of the game only 3 of these guys were on together (2 forwards).

I agree that seems to be the case but does our defensive pressure reflect this? I don’t believe it does, by eye it seems we’re pretty poor at locking the ball in with pressure these days and even when we do we struggle to score with a crowded forward line at the best of times so is it even worth it?

I’d rather stretch Oppo with an extra marking target inside 50 who can also push outside 50 act as another marking target to sit behind the ball and lock it in our forward half. Let them bring the ball out of defence but set up well to turn it over, with our strong midfield pushing up to provide pressure on the ball carrier when they’re bringing it out. Turn it over and get it in quickly on the rebound to our multiple very strong tall marking options (potential Naughty, Buku, English, Bont)

For example ball heads inside 50, Sweet and Buku drop back to the perimeter of the 50 to lock it in, Naughty up around the contest as he’s a beast, English take over inside 50 rucking duties - or even more effectively Sweet push in take the ruck Timmy & Buku guard the 50, very very hard to get out of that 50.

Also Naughty is 4th in the league for tackles inside 50 so he doesn’t even count as a normal tall, he’s a genuine pressure beast inside 50. So surely we can carry two more talls inside 50, provided they’re alongside smalls like West, Cody and as of late McNeil.

Currently I can’t see us being able to accommodate another tall. The drop in pressure is too great. Now this isn’t the fault of the talls as much as it is a fault of our list. We really need a super fast crumbing small. Someone agile, quick, with goal sense and can lay a tackle. IF we add that player to the forward mix, then I want us to have another tall inside 50.

Playing Williams on a wing also helps, as he is good overhead. Just hoping that he improves a bit more in his running and makes that wing spot his own.

I'm hoping McNeil can become that player in time. His pressure is fantastic, and has goal sense, but still drops in and out of games too often as well as having some howler kicks at times

I was actually impressed with Williams's forays into the Fwd line, a couple of goals, and better delivery of balls into the Fwd's.
I love Lachie but man he butchers the ball.
If Williams is on the wing, I'd put Lachie in the guts, almost elite with handballs and running endurance.

We need a Pickett/Willie Rioli type don’t we. Genuine small fwd with pressure ability.

In this year's draft, I don't mind Jacob Konstanty as a small pressure forward. Bit of a late bloomer since he spent a bit of time pursuing soccer before returning to footy, now 19 and playing well. We've grabbed a few 19+ year olds in recent years. Also wouldn't be surprised to see us bidding on Alwyn Davey Jr if he's there at an appropriate pick (although Essendon definitely matches)

Every good team has one or two of these imo. Just recently Hawks and Richmond had some that contributed significantly to their dynasty periods.

We don’t have a reliable one yet, although Weightman obviously on track and hopefully McNeil and one or two others develop too.

Are you referring to Hunter? If there’s no spot for him on the wing he’s out of the side for me. We have 6 elite mids and there’s absolutely nothing there to suggest he should be ahead of any of them. He’s also a very ordinary forward.

In saying that, I think there’s a lot of differential to Williams and Hunters games that they can be an effective wing combo. It’s significantly better than the McComb, McNeil & Roarke combo we’ve had recently.

I agree I want a genuine crumbing small too but right now West & McNeil are avg 15+ PAs & 5 tackles, and Cody coming back is elite in this regard. So whilst none are genuine crumbers that is very very good defensive pressure output from our smalls so that’s why I think we can carry the talls, considering Naughty is effectively an elite small in this regard too.

JJ should help with the genuine speed too, some of his pressure last year was great. But yeah crumbing small should be one of our biggest targets at draft time but I wouldn’t be letting it stop finding our best team now

I find the suggestion that Ladhams, Lynch or Fort wouldn’t have been playing most weeks in a side that gave 3 games to Stefan Martin’s corpse and has been rolling out Zaine Cordy as a KPF/ruck all season to be laughable.

Coaches/recruiters obviously backed in English as first ruck and whatever we had on hand to hold down the KPF/second ruck roles in Bruce’s absence and it’s safe to say that to the halfway point of the season it hasn’t worked. Our forward line has looked awful for big chunks of the year and Naughton‘s marks and marks I50 are way down and both are in no small part due to having only one viable tall target that warrants oppo attention (thankfully Naughton has dramatically improved his ground game so at least he’s still hitting the scoreboard).

Also don’t understand how injuries only count if they occur to players we didn’t recruit, rendering them wise avoidances, but English, Hannan and others missing half the season to date is irrelevant, as is Martin being cooked, and not equally indicative of the merits of the decision making around another ruck/KPF.

Surely this is the case. For nearly 2 years has been saying how he is happy etc but still no signature.

Club’s had a few balls in the air contract wise for the last year or two so might be the club contributing to that too. Would be very disappointing to lose another young premiership player.

If he does want to move, given that he’s not a free agent and could delist himself and nominate for the pre-season draft, Ess being really crap is unfortunate timing. Or if he’s equally happy to go to Ess or North we may not have the best leverage.

No one wanting to risk getting to North hopefully removes any psd threat.
