“Josh has indicated to the club he is seeking to continue his career in Brisbane,” Bulldogs General Manager – List & Recruiting, Sam Power said.

“Josh has been weighing up this decision for some time and this news is obviously disappointing for the club.

“We believe Josh is at the peak of his powers in a football sense having had a career-best season in 2022, averaging 25 disposals and kicking 18 goals across the campaign.”

“The Club was clearly intent on Josh staying with the Bulldogs, having tabled an attractive contract offer for him to continue with us for the long term.”

“Given we have only learned the news this morning, we will take some time to work through the Club’s options leading into the trade period."

Their first this year is pick 16 which becomes 17 and next years first will be about the same.

It will equate in points at least to about pick 4 or 5.

While points don’t always equal the pick value I can’t see dogs wanting to give back another pick in the 30s also assuming we need one of these in the Lobb deal ?
I can see us doing something like this then assisting them with points this year by shuffling other picks (including next year).

If we get Brisbane's 1st, future first and give them Dunkley and some lower picks this year, I think that's about as balanced as it's gonna get.

Won't hurt Brisbane too much from a points perspective and Dunkley, Ashcroft and Fletcher this year is a great haul

Leaves us with 4 first rounders over 2 years which is a serious opportunity to strengthen a healthy young list. Best way forward.

Also leaves us pretty strong from a salary cap point of view, given we had $600k+ over several years on offer to Dunkley.

Pretty much rules Lobb out now unless we get the inevitable Bell fold and a future 3rd seals it
How many times does a player nominate a club, and not actually end up there? Dunkley 2 years ago, and...? Very rare.

There is no Bell fold required, the trade would have been discussed well before end of season, as virtually all of them do, Dunkley as well.
We have had a good relationship with Fremantle for years, Brisbane as well. Power and his counterparts at both clubs have been feeling each other out for weeks, everyone has a fair idea where the trades will land, anything else is posturing for fans and media consumption.

I've now read all of Tom Boyd's book - Liam Pickering set up the trade during the middle part of the 2014 season, Boyd nominating us post-season was no suprise to anyone in senior positions at GWS or us, and Griffen would not have been either, as GWS had been speaking to him for months as well. The only people "surprised" were media (much of of it feigned for click-bait), and fans, Dunkley, Lobb, and virtually every other trade is the same. Glaring exceptions are Treloar, where Pies list management were just incompetent.

Bell won't "fold" when the deal inevitable goes through, he's already got his lines written down and rehearsed when Jackson magically ends up at Freo, and then Lobb is suddenly "no longer integral to team structure, Freo are a great club for facilitating his move east to be with his partner, and wish him all the best."

We had our own version of this with Ward, Griffen etc and few others a while back, however, this is another example of why losing players is nothing to be overly morbid about.

Definitely, as well as Hawks losing Buddy, Geelong losing Ablett etc. People massively overestimate the importance of an individual.

In Dunkley’s case he is at best our third best midfielder. His departure alone isn’t a major worry in the short term. Treloar, Libba and Smith would all probably have wanted more centre square time this year anyway.

My biggest concern is that he was relatively young so it ups the need to get young mids to gradually introduce.

I meant Bell fold from his current line of"required player will not trade"

If you checked the Properties against the Word doc Sammy just copy-pasted that from, the file was created months ago!

I do think Freo have moved the goalposts on any agreed deal for Lobb due to the exodus from the club. They will now know we potentially hold a swathe of first round picks. Stay strong Sam, he’s really not worth much.

I think Lobb purely comes down to Jackson

If Freo get Jackson, Lobb's salary just doesn't give them value and they'll let him go at a reasonable trade price.

If they don't get Jackson, they can't afford to lose Lobb.

He has requested a trade, Brisbane cant walk him to the draft, if they dont satisfy us he can go to the draft or accept our contract offer (2 very unlikely but possible outcomes).

Despite people stating it over and over again, i dont see how its much different to him being contracted. We can still hold out for the right deal otherwise he walks to the draft or comes back, same as if he is contracted.

its just a matter of huff and puff and bluff, same as with a contracted player, Sammy is not going to accept unders cause he's uncontracted, there is no reason to. Brisb and Dunkley need to work hard to get this over the line, and i imagine the deal is already done in principal.

I think it does too however will be interesting to see if Bells stance changes

What contract do we have to give Gardner to get a band 1? What contract is Gardner worth?

Can we rort the system like Brisbane did with Daniher, give him a big 2 year contract then next year extend for another 2 years at a lower price to smooth it out over the 4 years.

Then we trade Dunks to Brissy with 29 & 37 for this years 1st, next years first & band 1 compo (generated by overpaying Gardner)

In : Pick 16, next years 1st, pick ~20, Gardner
Out : Dunks, Pick 29, Pick 37

Brisbane still have McStay Compo, pick 29, pick 37 (roughly 2000 points or equivalent to pick 3 or 4)

We get a solid backline cog & have picks 11, 16, ~20 & 2x ‘23 first rounders which is a heap of assets to work with

Please, balance that out with:

Isaac Heeney
Callum Mills
Nick Blakey
Sam Naismith
Sam Wicks
Braeden Campbell
Errol Gulden
and 2 or 3 others

All through the Sydney academy.

Meanwhile we get one high draft pick through our academy system and the whole thing gets practically scrapped!

Brisbane surely have to lose a player or two. Wilmot, Payne, Lohmann etc
100% this.

I don’t know why all this speculating of end of round picks is about, Power isn’t going to make a contender stronger then bank on them being crap to get value out of future draft selections.

If he goes to Brisbane then a player has to be involved from their end coming back, it doesn’t work otherwise.

was speaking to a mad brisbane supporting mate this morning. They hope Gardner is part of the deal as his body holding up is an issue. They prefer letting him go before Payne or others. I hope its just picks

If we turn 29 into 15 ext year and 37 into 20 whilst getting pick 15 + pick 11 we are in an awesome place to balance and reset our list

Is "Why do you want to leave your club?".. "I'm too professional" from the same, how to get promoted, book as "what's your biggest weakness?"... "I work to hard"?

Why have you mentioned the Geelong pick? Have they been linked to Hunter somewhere?

More likely Martin
