WESTERN BULLDOGS

As things stand, it won’t be an enviable 2024 for list manager Sam Power and the powers that be at Whitten Oval. They’ll have to figure out how to keep all of Aaron Naughton, Bailey Smith, Jamarra Ugle-Hagan and Tim English, the latter of whom is a restricted free agent. If all four of those names continue developing like they are, they are going to be some of the most sought-after players in the game. It’s a tough balancing act, albeit a good problem to have. Jason Johannisen will be an unrestricted free agent but looks set to finish his career at the Dogs despite trade talks this off-season.
Too many stars, what a problem to have, hey?

Bailey Williams FA as well.
Our annual KPD search will require some cash to be allocated too, although Keath money may cover that.

I’d be all over swooping in and stealing Seedsman off the crows providing he’s healthy - although I believe it was concussion issues holding him back so hard to know, but could be worth the risk and he’d love the security of a main list spot. Would be an instant upgrade on anything we’ve got

Expect to lose one of them mentioned… then again if they stick and take unders we still have a great list for next 5 to 10 years

He's done likely to get paid out after he got knocked out bad at training

A half cooked Dickson owned that toothy bastardo. Not interested.

Man I miss Deadeye. Weightman quietly approached his goal to behind ratio this year though. 78% goal accuracy, second highest of anyone who kicked over 20 goals.

Yes tough balancing act but these types of articles completely ignore the fact that Power doesn't need to wait until the 1/1/24 to start negotiations. Naughton and Marra will most likely be signed away some time next year while Baz will be backing himself in to rebuild some of the leverage he lost during his suspension, he won't be signing until 2024. Big Timmy the wild card, if he decides to go back to WA nothing we can do.

Isn't Josh Eyre meant to be a decent prospect? Was he the one we bid on?
We bid on Cody Brand, don't recall us bidding on Eyre. (Could well be wrong though)

EDIT: Just looked it up, Richmond bid on him. We didn't have the picks to bid on him, that was the JUH draft.

Would give the opponent their choice of a spare player in defence though.

Our entries forward are already trash enough so it would disadvantage us even more.
He’d play very high half forward pushing up into the contest where he excels IMO and could be a part of the solution for those poor entries.

Plus with Naughty Lobb and Marra down there now you’d hope we have enough genuinely strong marking options to negate a spare defender - if their chemistry is good a spare can’t stop them all. If the spare is in position to drop off Daniel and double team Naughty hit up Marra on the lead or find Lobb out the back in a one on one etc.

Of course easy to say in theory 😂 but I wouldn’t be too concerned about someone playing off Daniel, he has enough weapons to cut them up the other way and force attention to come back to him - use his kicking inside 50 as part of the solution not the problem, and more importantly we need the big trio learning to compliment each other and play as a team, not just all leading to the hotspot as we’ve seen in the past

This is the biggest thing holding our current forward line back by a mile. 2 or 3 forwards going for the same ball. Usually with naughton trying to cannon his way through everyone injuring himself and team mates or weightman trying to take Mark of the year when he should be crumbing. Even getting more natural forwards around them isn't going to fix that.

Could he play forward pocket and crumb to the big boys?

The only ground Id say its in Daniels favour is at the MCG where there is wide space to hit up a lead with skill.

If I was Geelong/Sydney for example, Id match up all the defenders and leave Stewart/Mills free ignoring Daniel up the ground and they would both go for 40+ possessions easy.

Also if Daniel is doing well, its very easy to counter straight away by moving one of your wingers to tag Daniel and leaving our worst winger free.

I think he probably could part time, but I don’t think he’s natural enough as a goalsneak forward pocket to do it full time considering his lack of speed and defensive pressure tbh. I like him more high half forward where he can push into the midfield as he’s more of a natural mid in the contest than a forward IMO.

I think he’s best used as a utility, don’t lock him down to any one position where the opposition can set plans that negate his strengths and pick on his weaknesses - but instead use him as a Mr Fixit to plug holes and keep his role changing throughout a game. Ie start half forward and try to get the ball into his hands but can throw him back if our ball movement is struggling out of defence, throw him in the guts if we need a different look in there. Give him a run on the wing, deep forward etc

I agree. Carlton used to do it for Walsh early in his career and Sydney for Mills. Start them somewhere different every game and sometimes onball for a bit too so its harder for teams to plan tags/abuse the match up.
