Netball season runs for 3 months.
Thats my point. Its the single reason that most people have dangled as the lure of a return west for being concerned about his contract status.

It was a nonsense then and it's a nonsense now.

Tom Lynch, Steven May, Jake Lever, Shiel just a couple that spring to mind of recent times.
Were there other reasons? “Going home” is a popular one. All interstaters are supposed to want to go home. Was Shiel fooled into believing Essendon was a more likely contender than GWS? I suppose each case is different anyway, can’t lump them all into the same scenario.

Can we coax Tom Boyd out of retirement?

Someone posted recently that he wasn’t in the best physical shape, but you are not alone in wondering about that.

In some ways it shows that all the planning can go out the window with injuries and retirement, but we also should have had a plan B and tried to recruit replacements since then….

I’m reasonably bullish but two years from now Hunter, Macrae, Bont, Dale, Daniel Treloar etc will be in their late 20s and Bruce, Libba, JJ and Keath will be into their 30s and possibly retired.

If we’re still in contention it will depend on our best mids holding form and health and young players stepping up.

If two years from now some of the above are retired or banged up and we’re mid-table players like English might want to explore their options and we might look to freshen up.
Most those guys will be hitting their absolute peaks over the next couple years rather than dropping off. Hardly cause for concern.

Bruce, Keath and Libba will need replacements but all have potential stars waiting in the wings for their opportunity plus another 2-4 trade windows and drafts to find more options.

I’ll admit our performance this year hasn’t been great but our list is still one of the best in the competition in the medium-long term.

To be fair, it's not the only reason. Timmy is still a Perth boy by himself. Although his family lives 250km from Perth, Tim still clearly has other attachments to the place. He spent his entire teenage years there and still has his close friends.

I'm guessing Dale & Dunkley re-sign with us and we lose a mid-tier player or two for unders.

At the end of 2024 Bont, Hunter, Macrae, Treloar and Libba will all be 29-32. Not many players hit their peak at that age. Plenty finish up in that age bracket. They might play another 5 years but their peak is likely now or the next two.

If we’re going to keep challenging then it will mean we’re relying on younger players stepping up. I’m optimistic but it’s not a certainty.

Who are you thinking?
Hayden Crozier, Bailey Williams, Laitham Vandermeer and Jason Johannisen are names that stand out to me as players we would miss if they left but would likely be able to be pinched out for unders.

Would agree with this. We might have good players starting to hit their prime in the next few years, and some great talent coming through, but Bont and Macrae (who I always think of as our two key players, even if structurally Naughton and others might appear more important) will be tipping into the second half of their career. They might still be in their prime, but the end will be closer than the start.

I'm confident we'll draft well and pick up role players on the edges, but not sure we'll get any big guns on trades/free agency. No real evidence to suggest that will happen.

We don't need to lure a superstar. Bruce, Keath, and Duryea are three I can think of who weren't huge names but came over for quite cheap and have taken on very important roles in the side.

Not exciting but potentially available and affordable

Unfortunately, we won't get a lot for any of them. VDM / Williams might get us a late 2nd / 3rd rounder. JJ and Crozier a 4th, 3rd if we are lucky.

Better than OBrien and IF he only costs a late second, I would do that deal.
Francis Must be played in Defence and he is NOT a swingman. Not sure he will be a Bevo favourite, without that any pick spent would be a wasted as he will only play at Footscray.
