Good to read some talk regarding Key Backs we might have a look at. I'm not sure if people discussed this at the time, but we also need to consider that Keath's AFL career might be shorter than expected, due to coming from a separate professional sport, and playing both disiplines in that sport. Being a tall batsman, as well as a medium fast bowler, would have put a faif bit of strain on his back, which could lead to earlier than expected hamstring issues?

Also, with talk that we've neglected tall defenders, I'm not sure thats true. we have been unlucky. In Bev's time Hamling and Adams have both left, Collins was taken high but didn't work. Naughton was taken high as a defender, but Boyds unexpected retirement probably had some effect on us having to transform him into a forward. Cordy hasnt come on at all. But yes, another tall defender would be handy.

And we have invested an awful lot on talls in general recently. English was first round, Naughton, JUH, Darcy also. I think we have to appreciate this to some extent. And was Collins a first round pick that got split so we could also get Dunkley?

Yes - we split pick 11 for two later picks and took Dunkley and Collins.

I love Dunks but if you want to make yourself a little depressed see who Carlton took at our original pick 11.

I like a lot of Defensive players. GWS are said to be in need of shedding salary cap space.
I would be interested in Himmelberg as a defender, Haynes and Taylor.
McGovern and Harrass from Eagles
Jack Henry who is battling to get games for Geelong.
Clurey port Adelaide
Balta Richmond
Pearce, Ryan Young at Freo
Harris Andrews. Worth asking about
Ridley and Redman Essendon
We just have to be aggressive and bold

Taylor would be the best choice. May as well go for the best choice at GWS. Haynes hasn’t played well at all this year and would be a risk to take on.

I’d be having a chat to Nathan Murphy from the pies, probably no real need for him to move with him getting game time and the pies probably playinng finals but he’s still unsigned - I’d be asking the question.

Why gws defenders , they have a worse defensive system than ours.
0 chance of getting Balta Andrews or Ridley
Redman and Henry are no good

Used to have a good defensive system in their finals days with Haynes, Corr, & Davis as their key backs. Now Davis is over the cliff & Corr has left. Haynes I'm not sure what's going on but a change in scenery could be what is needed.

Haha, if Haynes bears no grudges from his throat incident with Bont!

Then he’d be brilliant.

Not his greatest effort this season, but he is a fantastic player.

I reckon we’re zero chance though - would be a massive trade cost.

EDIT - oh wow - he’s actually just turned 30! Scrap what i said about his trade cost!!

Not a massively tall defender however (192cm)

Haynes isn't a true key, more a third tall/interceptor. Good player at his best and it's not like we couldn't use an interceptor but we should know he's not going to be the answer to our prayers.
I think the problem with us is we play an aggressive set up reliant on intercepting yet Keath aside Gardner & O’Brien can’t play one on one or intercept consistently well. Whilst I agree Haynes isn’t the FB wed love to take the big forwards I’d still prefer to play 3 gun interceptors over what we’re playing with the way we set up. He’d be a huge upgrade on what we have, but yeah I can’t see it happening anyway

I'd prefer not to get a stop gap, both in terms of age and height. He was a good player, but appears to be on the downward trend over the past year or two.

I'm not sure who the answer is, but I honestly don't think it's Haynes...

Funnily enough, I heard from a good source we were originally trying to trade up and Curnow was one of our main targets. Dalrymple was particularly keen on Weitering, but we never had anywhere enough to satisfy Carlton. I believe Curnow was pretty much a certain top 10 pick (probable top 5), but was caught drink driving a week or two before the draft which is why he slid. Kinda ironic he slid to our original pick in the end.

The story at the time was that we were super keen on Curnow but Carlton were too, and they would have taken him with pick 10 (which they used on McKay) if we still held pick 12.
McKay was Carlton's second choice, but they knew Adelaide were keen on him and wouldn't take Curnow due to relocation issues, so they took McKay at 10 and Curnow at 12.

Apparently we favoured Dunkley over Millera, Rioli and the others available so traded down to get Dunkley and an additional pick.

Just absurd that Carlton were able to nab both McKay and Curnow in the same draft. Both could lay claims for the best key forward in the comp for the next 8-10 years.

Oliver Gigacz do you have Josh Dunkley’s kicking efficiency stats this year versus career overall?

It might just be my eyes playing tricks on me but he’s seemed very reliable over the last month or so with his 40m+ kicks to leading targets (still an ugly action).

Not depressed at all knowing Dunks helped in a a premiership year. I make that trade even in hindsight.

Dunks has had better career to date and is a very good player. Curnow could be a potential superstar, but hasn't been able to get on the park a lot and I wonder if his knees will continue to hold up. No matter what happens I won't be unhappy about it.

Yep, but irrespective of what happens next, we may not have won that premiership had Dunks not been on the park during the finals series.

Given Curnow played 6 games in his debut year.

I'm glad we had this guy in the side.

Haynes is a big no from me
No point taking an intercept mark if you then hold the ball for 15 seconds trying to work out what to do with it

We targeted a tallish interceptor last trade period (TOB) so I don't we'd look for another one.
We've been pretty vocal about wanting a KPD this time

We were also very interested in Ben McKay too, hoping he'd be available at our split pick.
