If he's only going to get 5 touches a game they need to be very special. A number of games this year he gave a sum negative impact all told.

But happy to give him the benefit of the doubt and hope he turns it around. He needs to figure out his role and talents and then use them.
Good run with injury would go a long way to helping there. Also if he had a consistent role so he can wrap his head around the requirements of the role.
To allow him to become a more confident performer. Hopefully the club have got a program in place to allow him to do so.

Plenty of bad luck injury wise but has he really has his role chopped and changed? I feel like he’s had the same role every time he’s played.

You could be right about the role actually I think I had it in mind that he was flipped between playing closer to goal and the HHF role but still basically the same role. Feel like he could be an important pressure player if he can overcome his injury issues

I understand we are hoping for BSmith, West or Garcia to transition to a more regular midfield role but I still believe we are one classy mid short going in to 2023. Through the trade and draft, several of our main rivals were able to bolster their midfields significantly while we actually lost two of our main ball-winners. Our midfield, despite it's generally strong performance, has been found wanting in important games in the past two to three years either by a lack of pace or a lack of consistent application throughout games.
Unfortunately, we weren't able to recruit any of the top mids in this year's draft and I don't know if there's anything left out there but we are going to need all the speed and class we can find to give proper service to our forest of tall forwards.

For now, Treloar could be that player. Get him out of the back line and put him where he belongs in the midfield.

I’m far more concerned about finding a defensive-minded midfield bull to fill the void the dunks is leaving
There’s a bloke called Sullivan running around in the VFL who averages 6 tackles a game (and still gets plenty of ball himself).

If we're talking defensive mids, Toby McLean is back.

I watched the Dragons v Rangers game live earlier in the year. I was there to see another player but I noticed Clarke.

He kicked 2 goals and had 21 disposals in a team that lost by 70 points. He was super impressive.

Clarke reminds me a lot of Clay Smith. Just a little bull who applies pressure and can kick a goal. I hope he can be a heart and soul type player for us - we need a bit of mongrel in this team.

I was absolutely racking my brain thinking who you meant, other than Dunkley. Is Hunter really a ‘ball winner’? He runs hard to find space to receive the footy from his team mates. It’s a positive trait, of course, but that would have been an even bigger asset if he used the ball better (and faster!). He’s not someone I’m remotely concerned about losing to be honest.

I stand firm in my belief that Hunter was giving us nothing we weren't already getting from Roarke, for a third of the wages. It was a good move to trade him out, especially considering the off field issues

Hunter was as much if not more of a half forward than a wing the last two years anyway. Bailey Smith was played much closer to a true wingman outside of CBAs (as were Roarke and Williams). I don’t think the wing role will change much, but Hunter’s departure might create an opening for someone like McLean at half forward.

I think Hunter was always at his best when his role was more inside and contested than the very outside role he eventually found himself in, but the half forward spot did sort of minimise his speed and disposal shortcomings and accentuate his creative short kicking around 50.

Hunter would run hard to receive the ball but his usage was both poor and he'd take an eternity to move the ball on. Like Nat said, Roarke was probably more efficient on the wing this season on a far cheaper contract.

Agree.
He only played 10 games in 2022 anyway and most of his stats were down on previous years. That included avge disposals which were under 20 per game for the first time since 2015.

Just hope we aren't picking up any of his salary.

Hunter with ball in hand just gave me the shits. Stop, prop, look back, hesitate, float a shitty kick into the forward line that is easily dealt with. No damage factor.

He had some chemistry going with Macrae that was effective, until this year. Wonder who he’ll partner up with at Melbourne.

Josh Eyre and Liam Stocker are training with saints.

Might not be long until we see it.. being round 1 and all

Guarantee that's why we are playing them straight up

Brisbane will be shortly after and likely another double up
I'm not sure he will even be a starting player in their 22 for round 1. Who does he replace in their side? I see him more as a depth player (like Schache will be).
