Interestingly the AFL.com.au article a couple of days ago regarding the highest paid players in the league, Bont wasn’t even mentioned despite around 15 players being named.

I don’t know whether it was an oversight or he genuinely didn’t feature near the pointy end of the list. In all seriousness when you take into consideration ability, leadership, marketability etc. Bont would easily have claim to most worth in $$ value across the whole league.
Bont usually takes unders to keep the team together, I believe.

He does get a nice new car year.

The posters lamenting the state of our small defender stocks seem to have forgotten about or are perhaps underestimating Hayden Crozier.

I presume you weren't watching the VFL last year? Crozier is sadly cooked, his athleticism is dropping off and he doesn't have the smarts to compensate for it.

I know he takes unders but there's a big difference between $1 million (which is already unders) compared to say $800k which is probably leaving $400k on the table. As others have said, I'm his third party deals take him to the very pointy end of the list.

Take this with a grain of salt, but I believe we invested in him very early - he was getting well above market rate in his first five or so years.

We 100% were. Given what we had when he came in we certainly would've been struggling to hit the 95% minimum hence why guys like him and Macrae would've been on overs then so take unders now.

2008 we dominated that 3rd quarter for no reward.
In control of the game (Geelong looked to be tiring) before Moz decided to switch for some reason and give Johnno a loopy, Hospital pass of a kick in the one dangerous spot of the ground at that stage.

Max Rooke runs through him, they kick a goal and flick the momentum.

Love ya Moz, but that was very ordinary.

Plus we pissed away another handful or so of simple opportunities. Was it Higgins that missed a few sitters in that 2nd half?

Cats might’ve got out of jail that night, had randoms like Harley push forward and helicopter balls. Of course theirs went straight through the middle for goals.

To be fair to Morris, that was a blatant missed free kick that should have been paid to Johnson. Absolutely killed our momentum.

Narkle? Mid depth, too talented to not be on a list, and got himself fitter according to media. Haven’t seen or heard much about how Poulter is going. Seems logical to wait until mid season though I guess.
Reminds me of Cameron Faulkner... which some people will probably say is racial profiling...
...but he had massive wraps and looked a likely type just like Narkle but never progressed past a handful of senior games.

You might be forgetting he didn't play small defender either.
He played predominantly as an intercept marking mid sizer

If Cam Faulkner got rid of the ground ball fumbles he would have played 200 games. Just never developed 'the touch '

Semantics. He is a small that is very good in the air which makes him very versatile.

If we lose either of Duryea or Williams, or simply decide to change up our defensive structure then Crozier's presence could be extremely valuable.

I haven't liked our defensive structure much recently, as it is relatively easy to exploit. Daniel couldn't defend well in the air and Gardner couldn't defend well on the ground. I think they were somehow supposed to compensate for each other's weaknesses but it simply didn't work out that way.

I would prefer we go for a 2 KPD set up backed up by some versatile defenders that can play against either talls or smalls unless we come up against a good side that plays with 3 very strong tall forwards. Even then I'd still be tempted to just play with our normal preferred set up and back our strengths 8 times out of 10.

Semantics?

His gamestyle is a little more than semantics.
The way a player plays is more important than some arbitrary categorization based purely on height.
E.g. Bont and Macrae are taller than Stephen May - that doesn't make them KPDs

Crozier often matched up on traditional small forwards, and hence often played a classic small defender role. The fact that he has a great leap and is capable of matching up on medium sized, and at a pinch tall, forwards doesn't negate that.

People forget how good he was a few seasons ago. Remember there was a time Duryea was stuck in the VFL because he couldn't displace Crozier.

He's had some injuries, form fluctuations, etc. but fully fit is a proven performer at AFL level.

I think there is also a bit of evidence that he is a guy who lacks a bit in terms of self-confidence and needs to build it back up before he plays his best.
You might recall his first patch of games for us were far from great, but once he established himself at his new club, he strung together 2-3 excellent seasons for us.

He played as an athletic interceptor like a Khamis does now occasionally playing on a small doesn't make him a small. He is a medium who plays taller due to his vertical leap.

He hasn't played well in 2 years not due to injury but due to form he's nothing more than a solid depth player now

Find this interesting didn’t someone on here mentioned that Naughton was signing a contract extension

Fremantle has Western Bulldogs star Aaron Naughton and Port Adelaide young gun Mitch Georgiades on its radar, according to Western Australia journalist Ryan Daniels.

Coming off an impressive rise to finish fifth in 2022, the Dockers had a busy off-season of player movement that saw the likes of Luke Jackson and Jaeger O’Meara join the club after Jordan Clark and Will Brodie arrived the year prior.

But Freo’s bid to add more talent reportedly won’t stop there, with Naughton, 23, and Georgiades, 21, who’re both from Western Australia, seemingly in the club’s sights in a bid to bolster its forward line that was a weak point last season.Naughton is contracted at the Dogs for two more seasons, while Georgiades, who was linked to West Coast last year as part of the Junior Rioli trade and other clubs, is on an expiring deal at Alberton.Speaking on Triple M, Daniels revealed the Dockers were pursuing moves for the two key forwards.
“I know for a fact there’s two names very firmly on the radar,” he said.

“Aaron Naughton … and Mitch Georgiades … West Coast and Fremantle are right into this kid. If he plays more than a couple of games in the SANFL, that phone is going to be ringing hot, just watch that space all year.

“Naughton’s a bit more difficult because he’s under contract for this year and next. But as we know, things change in footy.

“I have it on very good authority that watch those two blokes. Do not be surprised if one of them ends up in purple as soon as next year.

“These things can happen, just watch this space. There was a lot of very subtle noise about Naughton last year ... just an under current. Just watch that space.”
Naughton is coming off a career-best season where he booted 51 goals and 47 majors the year prior. Georgiades meanwhile regressed slightly last season with 23 goals and played several games in the SANFL after kicking 32 majors in his second year.

It comes after Fremantle football boss Peter Bell even confirmed to Daniels during an interview on Channel 7 the list profile is “never finished” and that it’d continue to look at trade, free agency and the draft.

Asked about potential interest in Naughton and Georgiades, Bell said: “We have a lot of conversations with player managers ... we have an extra interest in West Australian players for very obvious reasons, just like Victorian list managers would have an extra interest in our Victorian players.

“The names you mentioned are certainly players we look at.

“But I think as a club we’re at a stage with the environment we’ve created, where there are players who are expressing interest – and sometimes that’s just it – and sometimes they express interest for a whole variety of reasons. But expressing interest in potentially moving to Western Australia and playing for Fremantle.

“That wasn’t the case a while ago. So things have changed a little bit.”

Reads to me as no one really gives a shite about Georgiades let's add Naughton in so people will actually read the article

Yeah Naughton's going nowhere. More like Freo shaping the narrative so that when they get Georgiades they can make it out that they were going after Aaron too but liked Mitch more bla bla bla.
