If they improve our bottom 6 players and they are cheap then they are exactly what we should be targeting. We won’t lose any first round picks to bring either in so it will balance our list a bit better after the last 2 draft periods. I’ll be excited if we have 2 medium contributers replacing 2 VFL level players on the field.
People said the same about O'Brien, Hannan, Baker, etc.

All are stuck in the VFL. No offence, but our list management in terms of trade targets has been poor in recent years, and I have little faith in us getting it right now. There is a reason players are fringe players at other clubs, it is not often they suddenly become best 22 players at their next. Tired of wasting our assets on players that end up being stuck in the VFL most weeks. Improving our bottom six players means finding a player who will become a regular best 22 starter, pushing the bottom few players out. Not adding more to compete for a bench spot, which doesn't improve the team.

Just want us to start getting our trades right again like we used to do rather well.

Though I do like the idea of taking a punt on Lohman if he is on the cheap. His stats at VFL level have been very good. Finds the ball, kicks occasional bags, and a fair few tackles as well. Hopefully we can find a way to fit him in our set up, being a medium forward and us already playing with three talls up front.

Yeah, I think Petracca played a lot more in the forward half during those earlier years but it's a decent point. It was pretty difficult to see he'd become the player he is now.

I'd give Smith - and most players who've at least shown they have potential elite upside - a chance to play under a better-coached team with an improved gameplan on both sides of the ball. Whether we get that or not is another question, but I'm optimistic he can be a lot better than he showed across the year.

He could do himself a favour and work intensively on his kicking though. It's a glaring weakness and will stop him from becoming a top-end player in the comp.
Unpopular opinion - his kicking is ok, his workrate is elite, his vision and decision making are below average and that's what is holding him back.

Pick 17 deal done
On his first year yes - I'm less convinced by his last two seasons

I'm all for hitting the draft this year over trading too heavily

Hearing about Esava’s trade value makes me think that I would be worth at least an early third rounder.
Geelong apprently want a high end pick, and Port only has 43 this year. Talk Power could package up a future pick, Duursma and another fringe player. But seriously the over rating and overvaluing of players is getting out of hand these days.

To be fair, when he's streaming forward he usually has a half a dozen opposition players filling the space in front of him while our forwards are 70 metres away pointing in the air and our midfielders are jogging behind him.
I suspect he'd be much more effective in a team with a better structured forward line

I don't think Duursma is worth that. Good first year, but has gone backwards.

Very outside, average (at best) numbers, suspect defensively and doesn't hit the scoreboard enough given his faults.

Has enough talent for a low 2nd rounder, but nothing higher for mine.
Has had some injuries which have held him back. Has got the talent and is a good kick 17 is an overpay but would do a deal that may involve 17 with something coming back to balance the ledger

How dumb is that Lloyd comment honestly, he doesn’t have the potential of Bont or Petracca and that’s what you want with pick 3, okay genius who? Who available at pick 3 has that potential? All well and good to say that’s what we want at pick 3 but if you can’t even name a player in this draft who may be available then it’s ****ing useless to compare them, honestly these campaigners 😂

Duursma would be a good addition if we can use 17 to pay for him and most of the points for Croft. Tomlinson and Lohmann I'd also be keen on bringing in as I don't think either will cost a lot of draft capital and will help our Dire 18-25th player depth.

Would mean we'd bring in Pick 10, Duursma, Croft, Tomlinson and Lohmann, a couple of late picks, and our standard DFA.

We'd like lose Sweet, Bruce, Hannan, McComb, Maclean, Khamis, Crozier, R.Smith.

Personally I think that's a clear win.

If a player has Bont potential, he’s probably not available at pick 3 anyway !!!

Pretty convenient for Lloyd to mention Petracca and Bont in relation to this draft pick range.

You could also get Jonathan O Rourke or Lochie Plowman calibre of players in this range.

He not going to mention them because it doesn’t suit the narrative.

All the early draft picks have potential but that is exactly what it is.
Sanders is the most like B.Smith of all the draftees available this year however he has shown he can preform at national champs, Smith has shown he can preform to a very high standard in finals at AFL level.
I would prefer to trade Smith and English out this year if they were 100% out the door at the end of next year but at this stage I'd rather back them and the club in to work out an extension.

I'm not sure it's unpopular - when I say his kicking needs work, it's probably a combination of vision/decision making and the actual execution of the kick.

At the WC game there were a couple of prime examples - he bursts out of the midfield, a forward starts leading to him and all he needs to do is kick it fairly flat and direct about 25-30m. Instead he balloons it over the forward's head.

He's done everything right to the point of the kick, but for some reason he's trying to over-kick it or his mind is muddled or he just can't judge the distance and execute properly. He must have done it 1000s of times in his life but when it comes to it he's missing by a decent margin.

Are we really linked to Tomlinson again? I've looked back and we've been linked to the poor bloke every year since 2019!

We regularly get our trade targets. Three years too late 😉

He tries to drill every target and ends up over kicking. He needs to take the heat off his kicking. Especially when you have a player 20 meters in the clear. To much room for error when you try to drill every kick.

Simon Black is one of the best kicks the game has seen. He never drilled targets.

Petracca is horrible with disposal as well. Percentage wise, he is worse than Smith. That all being said, I agree with everyone here when they say that Smith just needs a little composure. If we get speed on the game, all he needs to do is put it into some space and Pur forwards will move to it. The other option, particularly when playing Geelong, Melbourne, West Coast etc is pop it up.... right on top of the intercepting player and have our forwards smash their ribs 5 - 6 times in the first quarter.

Put it to space in front of them
