If we are making plays for an in-contract Wilkie and Butts, can we go for others that are in contract?

If Melbourne sees a bit of exodus and Daniel Turner doesn't want to be part of a bottom 8 team for the next 3-4 years, could he be pried out?

I know the below image is limited to a 5 game stint, but you don't "accidentally" be among the top performing key defenders in the comp. Especially at 23.

I know I keep banging on about him, but IMO he's on an upward curve and on current trajectory, will be elite.

He'd be an excellent option for next year, but just as importantly - IMO - someone we could potentially build a defence around for years after that.

If not this year, I hope we're presenting a significant contract to his manager for the end of 2026, when he's uncontracted.

I think people underestimate how much talent is on the dees list. They've drafted really well. Just need a refresher in the game plan and natural growth in some of younger players and they should be competitive again even from next season.

Yes but i can't repeat. I know the whole story but can't divulge due to confidentiality. But trade capital wasnt the reason it fell thru. We thru the kitchen sink at it well past my comfort levels. Ps its still not a done deal yet even tho media says it is btw.
Fair enough, from your initial post it sounded as if we might have offered something like 2 firsts (as a guide to ensure a trade would get done), and they still said no to opening the door to him leaving.

Interesting hearing from Josh Gabelich on trade radio this morning, sorry if already posted but gave some good info from a guy who is maybe the closest to the club.

Have been inquiring about Butts for around a month, really like him and floated a 2nd round pick for him but Adelaide knocked it back and said it would cost a lot more and they aren't interested in moving him (ie a 1st). Sounds like due to the price and Crows unwilling to lose him, now seen as unlikely.

Had a good crack at JSOS and initial interest in Tyler Young, but Eagles or Tigers for him (McQualter connection).

As already covered, Wilkie had a few chats and meetings with the club and it went further than they thought, Saints upped his contract to around $1 million now.

Mentions Sam Frost as one that he thinks could be likely as a DFA at the end of the trade period. Swans offered him a 3 year deal last year and had some other interest, but fell behind Barrass and Battle this year.

Seems like the spin now is that they are really confident in JOD and Buss and going to back them in to improve. Mentions Buss hasn't done a full pre-season still and was looking at other clubs during the year when stuck in VFL. JOD still has a lot of improvement in him starting late after cricket.

Losing Petracca, Judd McVee, May, although cooked for the last half of this season, has been a key plank for 7-8 years and won't be easily replaced, and they might have another one or two top 23 guys request a trade... I think they're in trouble.

But I guess I thought we were absolutely screwed at the end of 2014, so who knows how things can play out.

We’re just scratching the surface with Croft. My hope is that we find a spot for him in the back half of the ground.
The real miss is Murphy Reid. If we’d kept our first rounder last year, he’d have been available at our pick. We even tried to move up in last year's draft to get him. He has the tools to be one of the best midfielders of his generation. That’s what hurts.

Wasn't a big fan of Reid in his draft year, but I think I got that one wrong. He already looks better then Sanders and it's looking like we were better off letting the 2023 draft play out, (and just traded when necessary on the night) which is what I preferred to do rather then trading up to get Sanders. Time will tell I guess.

Grim.

Listened to the new Danny Boyd podcast with Michael Regan (new list manager).

Said the same about Buss.

It’s worth a listen

To add to this, Butts one we will probably target still this time next year as a free agent.

It sounds grim and disappointing after missing out on other targets, but I also agree that JOD and Buss probably have a fair bit of improvement each in them, with JOD already being at a pretty decent level himself and showed some good things. If they both improve and have good pre-seasons, it is still an improvement on last season, with Frost a more capable backup or spot starter than current version of Liam Jones.

I think the biggest improvement to the back line will be a tweak of the game plan, not having the defenders so susceptible to forwards out the back in space and maybe English / mids floating back more heavily to chop out and out-number fwds.

What did he say about Buss?

Will hopefully improve with a full pre season under his belt?
Will be looking elsewhere due to interest from other clubs?

”Backing in Buss and JOD” aka “we don’t want to pony up for who we need”.

Give Adelaide the first for Butts. Hawks and Collingwood would be ruthless, why can’t we?

God we are a soft club sometimes.

Well it's not even that the price to trade Butts is a 1st. He is a contracted and required player for them, who they have shown no indication of wanting to move. They are contending for a flag next year and he may be in their team round 1, so might still prefer keeping him as valuable depth, likely getting an end of 1st round - 2nd round compo pick next year anyway and have a crack at a flag.

Haha Sam Frost it is. What a club. Our big play was going after a contracted bloke who's in line to be that clubs next Captain.

Classic dogs. Play it safe and go to the draft. Lets burn the Bont years away.

So going after a contracted bloke is playing it safe please do tell us what we should do that isn't "safe"
