What's happening with Preuse from Norf?
2 years ago he was going to be the next Mumford...has he been getting a game? GWS or us should definitely look at him.

Not really, it was in absolute perfect conditions, he pretty much won every hitout in the game.

Keep Shaun McKernan for one more year as back up (no. 2 on our list) and then have Draper as no. 3 pushing McKernan for that no 2 spot. Lavender is also in reserve and developing.

TBC would not garner us anywhere near the value we rate him at.

At his best, we (I) rate him as good as Grundy, maybe a step below Gawn and Goldstein (at their best). People feel he is not in the best 6 rucks in the comp so would not get us anywhere near a top 30 pick we should be requesting.

Also have to think of teams that need him. GWS may bite as may Geelong or Port Adelaide, they could pay a higher price if they feel he can change their fortunes but i still cant see them being that desperate for him.

GWS may pay a premium to attract a gettable ruckmen but that is it. You would think they go for a guy like Preuss over TBC.

Lots of mixed messaging in that interview, either deliberate to get Poort to sweeten their deal a bit or is gone would be my thinking.

That fact that he says it'll be done in a few weeks just makes me think hes letting port's offer marinate a little longer before having a looksy.

If he was going home he'd keep it til the end of the year and make verbal agreements with clubs during the season whilst saying 'reassess at the endo f the year'.

My prediction: Marinate > take juicy port offer on 2 years > come home @ 25 to vic on big money as free agent

Listening to Ollie Wines on SEN now, sounds very gettable to me.

I am a big fan of Wines...

but if i had an option i would rather get Wallis (for half the price) as a RFA and keep the two first round picks it would take to trade for wines.

Its better salary cap management and better for our long term for list development. If we were one player away from contending, i would say go for it.
However I dont think i am alone in saying we are not even close enough to contending (or have the trade capital to spare) to sell the farm for the 'missing piece'. Too many holes that need filling and younger guys who will want/deserve pay rises in the near future to shell out that much cap space.

I think we were into him last year as a james kelly like on field coach.
Probably missed that boat but i would wholly endorse us getting him as an assistant coach next year for sure.

Yes please to McVeigh, his kicking and decision making is still elite and would also love him to move into a coaching role with us.

He's a weird player, Bellchambers. The good is excellent and the bad is deplorable and they generally balance against each other in each game he plays.

His ruck work in the last few weeks has been good enough to sway the midfield battle in our favour, even against quality opposition, and that's a very rare thing.

He can also get quite a bit of the ball (at least against Richmond he did) but then he gets burned by most opponents working around the ground. He's conceding scoring shots so you'd have to query whether he's being allowed the ball by opponents around the ground because he's not doing much with it.

I think he'd be a more effective player in a good team because he could be the one to make the play and push forward where he could be really dangerous (more dangerous than all but a few of the best ruckmen).

No doubt that he's not a prototype for the modern game but I'm far from convinced that he's costing us much that isn't more to do with the overall performance of the team and I doubt that, on balance, he is not good enough to be part of a really good team.

I don't see any need to do anything about our ruck stocks this year.

Lycett could well be the next gun ruckman because of his ability to get around the ground but his aggression has also held him back to this point. You certainly wouldn't bring him on to a list with Bellchambers because there would be far too much salary cap invested in the one position on the ground that history shows doesn't need to be filled by anyone who is more than serviceable.

Leuenberger got really unlucky to play his one game against Gawn who is easily the most difficult opponent in the AFL. If Gawn was burning Leuenberger around the ground, has anyone stopped to think what he would have done to Bellchambers? Leuey's engine would be among the best of all of the AFL ruckman and while he's all limbs he's quick for his size. The other thing is that Gawn would have dominated the hit outs against Bellchambers because that's what he does. I doubt that anyone we could realistically trade in to the club would have done much against Gawn who is one of the most influential players in the league.

Draper continues to show a lot in the reserves. His tap work can be sublime but he's still getting bullied by some of the bigger and more physical ruckmen, which is fine given that Draper is still 19. He's showing forward craft that is above average and is still very good at ground level. Hopefully he can build his body and his fitness in the next 12 months to be genuinely capable of playing as the number 2. It's not really a matter of 'if' with Draper as much as it is 'when' he makes it as far as I'm concerned.

The is no space for Lavender to ruck at the moment but he's got a contract for next year and there are signs that he's worth persisting with. It's really early on, and he has had some injury trouble, so it's hard to gauge his development but he's not far behind Draper at the equivalent time at least in terms of his presence around the ground. His athleticism is the key and he's slowly starting to fit in with the play. I'm expecting him to finish the season well.

By this time next year we should know enough about Draper and Lavender to plan around them both, that's why I think it's essential to keep Leuenberger for another year. We should be basing our planning on having Draper taking over as the numbers 2 next year at which point it would be safe to play Lavender as the VFL number 2 (to get him the necessary game time) and phase Leuenberger out of the side. McKernan should maintain his spot on the list and can be relied on to ruck in emergency for another 12 season.

At the end of next year we'd have Bellchambers, Draper and Lavender at which point it would make sense to think about another long term project as a category B rookie.

I don't think that there is space for more than 4 ruckmen on the list purely from the perspective of giving the players enough game time. There is room enough for two players who are only ruckmen but the next two really want to be able to play as key position players (preferably one forward and one back).

There is no point picking McVeigh up to play next year, that would be the definition of list clogging.

Hurley and Hooker are veterans. Saad, McKenna and Gleeson will all have between 60 and 100 games. We have more than enough experience and a need to get game time into players who will be in their third and fourth years.

We need to take the training wheels off in that part of the ground not add barriers making it harder for talented players to get games in a part of the ground where there is already a glut.

I'd also target Wallis and Gaff as FA.
