Obviously been a great service to the club but I don't see where exactly he will fit in when he is fit to return?
With the likes of Armfield and Browne developing and Wiggins and Russel finally displaying their potential, it's going to be difficult for him to get a run in my opinion.
He's still only 26 so we could get a 2nd or 3rd rounder for him.
Thoughts?

Yeah seen him in 2000/01 play mainly as a forward and showed some quite silky skills and good goal sense. But i would prefer someone more hard at it providing strong purposeful leads like Wiggins just atm as i think that style of player compliments our team, also cant see Houlihan putting his neck on the line and do the 1%ers like Wiggins but maybe a small midfield role off the bench is a chance for him as he seems to have a knack for hitting Fevola lace out at times but would need to add alot more to his game then just being an outside player imo.

he did kick 28 from 23 games as a small forward in 01 when we finished 6th
16 in 02 from 18 games, and that was our first wooden spoon...
16 in 03 from 22, but was pagans first year... and when he was first shifted out of the forward line
from that point onwards its all down hill

id love to see him get a gig in up front, there wont be any single solution to our forward line problems (bar jono brown), itll be finding players that can consistently kick 1-2 goals, and can lift when fev is down
sure, he might not be a great fit, but he is DEFINATELY worth giving a go before trading him

I think he will get back in the side. As some people were talking about in previous threads, we need to play our players in the posistions that suit them best.

Houlihans best position is up forward and Ratten knows this.

No way!!! Keep him we need some experience and we need someone will solid kicking skills. Hoops at HFF with the talent we have and the amount of times we will go forward he could kick 25-40 goals...someone has too kick some cause Fev can't do it all.

I think he deserves to keep him spot and every team has softer players that are classy and use the ball well.

Hoops stays for mine:thumbsu:

DEPTH....the word of 2008 & beyond!!!:D

I don't see why we shouldn't wave his name around about the trading room floor.

If we were looking to flash his name around, I think we should do it to one of the younger teams that might be interested, the Melbournes/West Coasts of the competition.

wait, so one of the younger teams would want him... but we... the youngest team dont...

im about 95% certain that all the people that want him traded are youngins that never saw him play pre-pagan
eddie everywheres best effort is 21 goals in a season (will top that this year barring injury, on 18 atm)
two small forwards capable of kicking 25-30 in a year would be fantastic, especially considering our current problems up front, and the fact that they can both push further up the ground and have an impact in the middle

im not saying he's gods gift, but trading somebody with little to no currency who could play a big part in erasing one of our major deficiencies... is just plain stupid

Seriously, with the way we've been playing lately, Ryan will add a lot up forward, and all these comments of 'trade him' will be revoked. It might take him until next year now to hit his straps, but he is certainly no 'depth' player.

As others have pointed out, we wouldnt get much for him anyway.

But seriously, you mention Browne, Armfield, Russell, Wiggins as though they are closer to being in our top 22 than him, please

I hope that once he is performing well in a winning side next year, he will get one or two appologies. He copped it enough when we lost as the number 1 scapegoat, the guy isn't even playing FFS, give the man a rest.

EDIT: Agree with the above post, its like most havent seen Houlihan play throughout his career

Yeah, I agree ppg05.
Hoops should be given the opportunity to play some games in a winning side, as we have seen with others like Wiggins, Bentick, Russell, Banno etc some confidence in yourself and the team mates around you can really help.

He wouldnt be valued too highly atm due to being out for so long and because other teams are only beginning to notice us. :)

None of those players are close to him yet. No point trading him when he has got no value following a year he virtually hasn't played. He still has a good 4 or 5 years left and we should show him some loyalty if he wants to stay.

Trust me, i've seen a fair few tapes.:thumbsu:

Unfortunately, I think it's too late for Houlihan to regain that ability to play on the Half Forward Flank/Forward Pocket after his style of gameplay was dramatically changed when pagan persisted with him as a defender, and I think that if we try and use him where he played when he was a younger bloke with potential, we will be backtracking with him. It took a couple of years to settle him into the Forward Flank, just like it took him a couple of year to settle into the Back Flank. At 26 years of age, the two years would be better spent using him on the Back Flank rather than trying to re-kindle his forward potential, if anything. It's a touchy case.

Althought I must admit, he showed that he may have the potential to play a forward role again after last years win against Port Adelaide.

i would have thought he settled into a HFF pretty much strait away and then struggled under pagan.
Definately play him forward pushing into the middle. Very classy and one of the best finishers around the club.

Houlihan will stay. I watched some replays of the Round 1 game and he did okay.

Remeber that game last year. Think it was round 10 or 11 vs Port Adelaide...he kicked 3.

And since he had that hair cut he can't play with his hair anymore so he might be a bit more concentrated.

I don't know about others on this board but i'm getting genuinely sick to death of the "Trade Player X" threads.

Houlihan is one of the best kicks in the competition, and not every player in every team can be a hard-ball magnet. Now that our list is strong enough to allow us to play players in the position that best suits them (rather than having to play our best players out of position coz there's no-one else to fill certain important holes) we might actually be able to get full value out of Houlas.

At the very least you monkeys could STFU for half a season while he has the opportunity to do his stuff under a new coach.

Three months ago there was non-stop "Delist Russell" rubbish on this board - you don't hear that any more.
