He is worth a hell of a lot more than he was last time he was out of contract when clubs, particularly yours, started to circle.

He is most likely to win our B&F so we would want fair compensation. I would be after a late 1st rounder-early 2nd rounder particularly as he is most likely GC bound and if he polls well in our B&F as expected we would get decent compensation according to the uncontracted player rules.

You and your Essendon friends on your trade thread believe you just have to ask and he will walk to you. It seems some of you want to chase Brennan, Rischitelli and Sherman while giving up a 2nd rounder and Neagle :o in exchange.

It seems a 2nd round pick plus rubbish gets you anything these days. Ablett, Pavlich, Judd et al are all worth a 2nd round pick + Neagle/McKinley/Jacobs/Young etc. Love how people think combinations like those are somewhat equivalent to a decent player or a top pick. Of course no one wants to give up a first round pick, but they figure they have an opportunity to pick up something decent and get rid of a fringe player at the same time.

I suggested a 2nd round pick, and so did you, but then you decide to go on a rant about giving up fringe players for good players etc etc.

What are you on about?

I made a suggestion, you matched it, it seems pretty appropriate to me.

And btw, when a trade stalls its always a fringe player that gets moved on, it happens every year. Look at Jay Nash for example.

That would seem to be a great fit for Charmo. Where is he at?

They would probably look at Simon Taylor ( no much love at the Hawks)given injuries to Charmo, Carlton my have a few spares come season's end.

What are peoples thoughts on Setanta? basement bargin?

As what? We've got three solid KPDs, two solid KPFs, one up-and-coming KPF, and a variety of talls who can pinchhit. I don't think Setanta is better than any of Merrett, Patfull, Maguire, Fevola, Brown, Staker, Clark or Brennan.

On Setanta,

I agree that we have already players that already fill the potential roles that he could play, i'm thinking for depth and internal competition also if GC pinch one or two of our players.

maybe a rookie spot

Just putting it out their!
with setanta you wouldn't die wondering

I actually don't think Setanta is too bad. Inconsistent in terms of output but rarely puts in less than 100%. But he's not a good fit for us. We've got 5 KPP options (edit plus Clark and Brennan), including 2 of the highest paid players in the comp. I'd only be adding a youngster to that list.

Don't disagree on the effort side but we already have Sauce who at times lacks a feel for the smarts of game (hard/impossible for any kid who has not grown with the game). IMO you can only carry one of these particularly as foot skills are now at a premium.

Brian Lake / Fletcher highlights what a defender with footy smarts can do for you in todays game.

still seems for us that a dynamic small forward should be the priority, not many on the market sadly, guess we will have to wait on Bartlett and Banfield.

Hopefully GC will make annoucements before trade week so we have time to fill any holes

I can't seem to find a date for the announcement of Gold Coast signings. It would definitely have to be well in advance of Draft and Trade week- depending on which player a club lost it could dramatically change their Draft and Trade strategies, and would require significant consideration.

I seem to remember reading somewhere they can actually announce them up until two days into trade week. But it wouldn't surprise if it was either at the start of trade week or just before the PSD and rookie draft.

They definitely can't announce before September.

Gold Coast chairman John Witheriff said today that club executives were lamenting a player announcement gag slapped on the club until at least September.

And an interesting item I stumbled across while trying to find a reference for my first paragraph:
Friday 5 November, 2pm
Out of contract listed primary list players draft nomination deadline
Draft nomination deadline for new or expired (after three years) nominations
Nomination of use of compensatory selection by clubs that lose an uncontracted player to Gold Coast FC

So you can definitively use compensation picks this year.

Anyone keen to trade our 1st round pick should imagine our team with Grimes and Jetta in it. Those 2 would make a big difference for the now and the future.

I am always interested in reading different opinions from posters who either don't rate or down play the importance of early draft picks.

if there is one player we need, we need armitage.....walk up start next year, he even worked in the Lions shop FFS

i want us to move heaven and earth to get this bloke...exactly the type of player we need as well, and a lad from up here

throw in charmo and sherman, get the deal done

I was just wondering the opinions of Quigley, TBD and Warwick on us getting Whitecross and Armitage and if you agree what you would give up to get that deal done realistically?

I've said in other threads that I am not sure that Armitage is a great fit for us beyond being a Queenslander.

He is talented but I think he plays a pretty similar inside grunt game to players like Harwood, Rischa, Redden, Polkinghorne and Rockliff. I am not sure we need more of that type to complete our midfield mix and think we need some more pacy, dynamic, x-factorish types.

I am still concerned by the fact he can't get a regular gig for the Saints. Yeah they are a great side but it makes me think he may have become slightly overrated in the same way Shattock and Prismall were by being unable to break into a great side. I've also heard that he likes the trappings of AFL footy a little bit too much and wonder if he has his head in the right space.

That said, if Rischitelli goes to the Gold Coast, I think Armitage would be a handy pickup, but I would not want us to be giving up a first round pick for him.

A pick in the 20s is probably fair for Armitage at this stage of the game. He has certainly lost value since 2006.

Whitecross I like and know for a fact that if Collier didn't slide in 2007 that Whitecross was Brisbane bound. Nice outside player with tidy skills and good run out of the backline. Certainly prefer him to Raines. I am not sure what Hawks would consider fair compensation for him.

GC have Zac Smith who is a very good prospect and would be doing pretty well in the B&F despite being only an 18/19 year old ruck playing against men in the VFL. GC may look to add a big experienced body but he is their future and I would be surprised if they paid big money for someone. They will be looking for someone who can shoulder the number 1 role next year before fading into the background as the number 2 once Smith is up to AFL speed. I rated Smith as the best ruck prospect available last year bar none.

J Charman.

I dont see why we need armitage, we have plenty of young improving midfielders Rich,Rockliff,Redden, beams throw in maybe banfield we will still have either brennan or riska, i dont really see room for armitage
