Exactly what Mick said.

Hawthorn already have a bloody good list, and it's only going to get stronger if they land these players.
At least they'll have to trade for O'Rourke, and Frawley will almost play as second banana to Lake if he decides to play on next year.

Really?

I can't imagine why you'd waste a list spot on a player that clearly wants out.
Because the only replacement we had for him would have been the new rookie on the list... some kid called Michael Jamison. Personally, if the Dawks wanted Thornton, I would have pushed for pick 6 from them. If they didnt want to play for that, I would have taken picks 24 and 33.

And considering that year we wasted a load of picks on the following players:

Pick 17 - Shaun Hampson - traded 2013
Pick 19 - Shaun Grigg - traded (AOR) 2010
Pick 35 - Mark Austin - delisted 2011
Pick 51 - Clint Benjamin - delisted 2008
Pick 67 - Joe Anderson - delisted 2010

Then in the PSD:

Cain Ackland - delisted 2008
Cameron Cloke - delisted 2009

And in the rookie draft:
Sam Jacobs - Traded (AOR) 2010
Ross Young - delisted at the end of 2007

So out of that particular draft, we have Gibbs and Jamison as the only ones who have made it at the club.

Considering at the time we had Pagan for a coach... we could have leveraged picks 17 and 19 for Kurt Tippett and Will Schofield.

We also passed on Westhoff a couple of times during the night. along with Lindsay Thomas and Todd Goldstein (if we really wanted another ruckman... after all, we wasted 4 ****ing picks on ruckmen in that draft and the only one that worked out was Jacobs... and we let him leave in 2010).

We drafted 11 players that year... and only 2 of them turned into anything good for the club over the course of the journey... Gibbs and Jamison.

Everyone bitches about how we should have taken Talia instead of Lucas in 2009... but it was really 2006 that ****ed us up. Because the next year, we took Kreuzer and the following year, we ended up taking Warnock (who incidentally spent his entire first year recovering from a foot injury suffered in the preseason).

Just imagine what we would have looked like if we had made the following draft picks

1: Gibbs
17: Tippett
19: Schofield
35: Goldstein
51: Thomas
67: Westhoff

We could have still taken Jacobs and Jamison in the rookie draft... and we could have pissed (H)Ackland and Cloke right off.

Hopefuly this year, we will be continuing with our drive of getting in good young players to the club and seeing the club wave goodbye to a F/S in Waite who obviously doesnt want to be at the club any more. Hopefully we will be able to leverage getting Jaksch and Jones and possibly a couple of other exciting youngsters either through trades or the draft.

The club is finally moving in the right direction and is actually drafting guys who have some talent and we are building for the future. Unlike the end of the Pagan era and the beginning of the Ratten era where we just seemed to want to draft ruckmen and flankers.

Frawley may force out Schoenmakers, hope we are not stupid enough to bite.

Unfortunately there's not much the AFL could do without it risking a restraint of trade case against it.
With FA coming in and Gold Coast & GWS taking all the talent in the last few years has just been a perfect storm for the clubs who were up the top to stay at the top.

Is becoming a farce in the NBA also, all the good players sign deals for the same length of time these days so they can come in and out of contract at the same time and then load up 1 team.

Exodous at the Dogs - Jones, Higgins & now Tutt all want out.

Apart from Higgins the other two haven't done anything at AFL level, the dogs have great youngsters... I couldn't see them being too worried with these three wanting to leave.

When the club was planning on keeping all 3 - it's not ideal. Certainly not Brisbane proportions yet but not ideal.

Restraint of trade, how so?

Higgins is certainly best 22, Tutt ain't.

Jones is an interesting one, where there's virtually no competition for spots - Grant was finished 12 months ago, Williams has retired and Cordy can't get a game. They're seemingly crying out for a tall forward!

The AFL can't stop players going to whatever clubs they want.

To be fair, Hawthorn only has the cap space because of Franklin leaving.

Blame Sydney.

Its what the plyers wanted, needs tweeking or get rid of it

Swann doesn't think pick five would be enough to satisfy the Magpies and he doesn't think Frawley is worth such generous compensation.

"We need to keep pick four because Melbourne have done a really good job of trying to sell the world that they'll get pick three for James Frawley and that pushes us back to five and that has a little bit of an effect on our ability to trade as well," Swann told AFL Trade Radio.

"I know 'Roosy' (Melbourne coach Paul Roos) said everyone he speaks to thinks that pick three is a fair pick (for Frawley) but we certainly don't and we would have thought an end-of-first-round (pick) would be the best for James. It has a big impact on us.

"We're talking pick three – it's a massive pick in a draft. I would have thought that would be reserved for top, top-echelon players.

"We'd just like to think that it wasn't just a standard fait accompli that James gets pick three because there's a whole lot of stuff that goes into it and obviously it has an effect on others around where Melbourne's pick is."

I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to this stuff, but could the AFL just give a lower cap space to top teams that gradually increase according to the position clubs finish on the ladder? They have to do something to help the lower clubs because it isn't working at the moment.
