That's exactly it. Not every pick up is about bringing another gun in the side. It's also about improving the quality and depth of our side to a point where our 17th to 22nd ranked players are quality players in their own right.

Higgins, at the right price, does that. Everitt and Docherty are prime examples.

With eagle eyes hind sight, i think that was the year that make/break our list if we had a list strategy.

1. We traded 1st rounder for McLean well before the trade period started (amateur), same year Hawks' J Kennedy traded for second rounder to Swan and Tiger's Tuck available for a bag of chip.

2. We could have picked up highly rated KPD Talia, who fit a need and best fit.

3. Could use the McLean pick for Lucas, Fyfe etc..

In a way we could have fixed up our spine (Talia, Hendo), inside mid (Kennedy/Tuck) and outside mid Lucas / Fyfe etc all around our picks , then the next year we would not have to try to draft all talls in one draft.
Like a dog chasing its tail we were....

To me, that was the draft that could have been.
Oh well...
We drafted Lucas and I am sure he was rated highly. Maybe its the clubs fault he hasn't come on?

Trouble is we'd have probably taken Gysberts.

If we let Waite go under FA without a whimper we are likely to get no better than a third (if lucky) pick.

Looking at Thursdays team we had 4 players who had been taken between the first round of the draft and the rookie draft. Two of these were Simpson and Waite, so in the 13 years since Simmo we are able to play only 2 later round picks in the best 22. Even allowing for a fully fit list to choose from we would probably only be able to fit Robbo and Buckley into our best 22.

I'd suggest, with our record, that our best chance of "playing the percentages" would be to offer Waite 2 years. We've been gambling and losing for 13 years.

We had 10 current or ex rookies in that team. Perhaps the best way of playing the percentages is to skip the middle rounds of the draft and go straight to the rookie draft.

Who cares if we don't get anything for him ?? Seriously ??

He's 32yo, we've seen his best (and worst) already so there is nothing major to gain from keeping, especially as we won't be near premiership contention for at least another two-years. Why keep him now when we know that we already have McLean, Simpson, Judd, Jamison & Carrazzo about to pull the pin over the next 2-3 years ?? Nothing worse than a mass exodus don't you think ??

If we were to give him a two-year contract, he takes the place of a younger player who in two-years time, will be infinitely better for being in the system and on the cusp of our premiership assaults. Keep Waite and that progress & development is stifled for a further two-years.

Stop playing catch-up and lay a strong foundation for the future. Everyone is buzzing about how good Buckley, Menzel & Cripps will be plus the impact Everitt & Docherty have had. Imagine the excitement levels amongst the supporter base when we add another 6-8 players of that age group and talent-level to the existing one.

Casboult (pick 44), White (pick 56), Tuohy (pick 73) were inspired rookie draft selections.

Because we won't be able to cull all the dead wood on the list that we want to if we don't pick up a FA or too. We'll be left filling list spots with picks in the 80s+. I'd rather Higgins than pick 86.

Higgins isn't after money. He's after more than 2 years.

I don't see him as a quick fix simply because he's not going to stop up from bringing in any kids that will help our development through trade or draft.

Higgins, who is 26yo is a good pick-up in that he has some years left in the tank and fits in with the rest of the mid-tiered aged players. He has good disposal and attacks the contest, he is not keeping anyone out of the team because the others aren't up to or and/or will be moved on. Put simply, that is List Management 101, the list is being improved and for a 4-5 year period as well.

If we were to pick up Malceski at 30 or O'Keefe at 34, we may as well change the name from 'Football Club' to 'Retirement Home'. They would not be coming to our club for anything more than a superannuation payout.

We did that with O'Reilly, Martyn and others and none of it worked.

Stop the quick-fix attitude, as unpalatable as it sounds, let's do the hard yards now and reap the sustained benefits down the track.

No issue keeping Waite on 1 year contracts until the end. He has that ectomorph frame that seems to handle the rigours of the game well, his form over the last two years up forward has been very good, and he is flexible enough to cover 4-5 positions.

A distinct advantage for the club if we can retain him at a reasonable price.

You might tell me where that tall is. Unlikely to be in this years draft because any that we may pick up will take more than 2 years to do what Waite can do now. As I stated earlier, even if we were to get Boyd it is my view that he will take a couple of years before he gets anywhere near this (I may be wrong but that's my view).

Even if we were able to get someone who could do his job in two years it isn't stupid to have Waite as back up for that player. It's not as if we have much in the way of potential among talls in the Northern Blues. Perhaps Watson is that player but he is living proof to back up my argument. We've waited 4 years for him, what makes you think that any we pick now will blossom any quicker?

If we had some hidden gems among our younger players I would agree with you or if we were able to trade in a "ready to go" tall. Even then we need backup in case of injury and I don't see why Waite isn't more than, at least, adequate backup for 2 years.

if we were to give him 2 years I'd love him to not be able to get a game on form in the second (or even the first) year but I reckon we are still short of talls and letting him go is a luxury that I don't think we can afford.

We have had a dearth of KP's for years now, why would we let one go that we know can play until we've righted our current imbalance?
