Yeah, see I love SPP, but IMHO he has reached his ceiling, will never have good enough disposal or decision making to be truly elite, and is over rated by the general footy community.

I also think GC is not going to give up one of the most highly rated KPF draftees in years for less, particularly when there will be ample competition should he want out. If Luko reached his ceiling alongside Marshall, we're a contender. If SPP reaches his ceiling, not so much.

But again, it's all just speculation and opinion...which would seem to me to be the point of this thread.

I was looking at the D&T board the other day and I think DPS and Pie 4 life had Mead around pick 13-14. He might not end up quite that high but it would certainly mean we need to do something with that second round pick and probably before draft night.

There’s a good discount rate applied to future picks. Depending on how our year plays out from here that second round pick could net us something in the range of 15-25 next year. Could be super important in the race from Lukosius/Rankine.

They are pretty much rating mead that high based on his stats in the sanfl and that he was invited to play in the game v Casey and his exploits from last year

Unless he dominates at champs he will drop way down the rankings.

Pros are he is a very good kick on both feet

Negative is he is slow. (This won’t matter too much if he makes up for it in other ways like quick decisions and smart which I’ve seen some of)

The main problem I have is that this year he looks exactly the same player I saw last year. I’ve seen zero progression and he’s had a ready made body for a long time.

People said he'd reached his ceiling in his first year. At the moment I reckon he's improving all the time and he has the same tools as Dangerfield and Martin. He could end up being one of the top mids in the comp.

As for being overrated, can I ask, by who?
 
We can write off SPPs form last year as a learning curve. SPP has improved on last year's form and the year before at this stage and there's absolutely nothing to suggest he can't go up a level again.
I would have shopped him around at the end of last season based on reports of his attitude towards the last preseason and the inconsistent form that was a refection of that.
The seasons SPP was flying during the preseason and his current form reflects that.

Completely untouchable and should not be mentioned suggested or discussed.

Ah ok we'll just give em Billy Frampton and a 2nd rounder then, not like they'll want anyone good for Luko.

It's a silly hypothetical anyway but this thread right now is reminding me of all those Hawthorn flogs who couldn't understand why they'd give up Burton to get Chad Wingard.
 
When was the last time a quality youngster was traded against their will to somewhere other than their hometown? Under the current trade rules, where players have to agree to it, it’s simply not realistic. SPP isn’t going to GC.

Whether SPP as part of the trade is something we'd consider (Port wouldn't and SPP would only go back to WA if wanted out) at least you've put up a viable good player to go with a good pick to make a deal. Much better than Amon + Hewett and our second rounder bullshit.

Agreed, but he wouldn't need to go to GC necessarily.

Of course. If SPP was going to be included in this fantasy trade to get Luko here it'd be as part of a 3 club trade to get him to WA, with either a top 5 pick or a good WA player (under 25, first 18, fans don't want to trade) going to GC as part of it.

A few of them I know were genuinely suggesting Tim O'Brien, Taylor Duryea and Kieran Lovell, so I suggested they give us Tom Mitchell (tongue in cheek) and they threw the toys out the cot.

it's a hypothetical, but when our fans are getting angry at it, then he's the level of player that needs to go. A young gun KPF available for trade is a once in 10 years opportunity. If we seriously want to be a chance of doing a trade our fans need to get their head around that we'd be 'overpaying'. Good mid's are available almost every draft at a pick we have or can get fairly easily (shit we've got potentially 3 last year), gun KPF's almost never.

People getting upset that we'd have to effectively pay $150 bucks for a player GC paid $100 for completely miss the big picture (I bet the Venn diagram between those fans and those that say 'Marshall has to earn his place! Structure isn't important!' has a big overlap). I hope the club doesn't let the tail wag the dog if they want to make a play at him and will have the balls to wear the flak of the price we'd be paying.
 
The Luko suggestion, sorry to have mentioned it now, was purely throwing up the best young KPF who isn’t settled and would fit out needs. He is also an SA boy with a potential ‘go home’ factor. Certainly isn’t anything more to it than conjecture and a bit of fun.


In terms of what it takes to get such a player, think Tom Boyd to the Dogs. Exactly same situation, KPF at the end of his first year wanting to go home. Dogs threw 1 mill at year at him, post his initial draftee contract, and traded a top ten pick and Ryan Griffen, their captain. Griffen wanted to go to be fair.

History backs that trade every time. Would we do the Dixon trade again, every time. Good KPPs are worth much more than midfielders.

Also the go home only factor is certainly not born out. Have a look at the players running around at Gold Coast who were traded in. Neale, McCarthy at the Lions, McGovern at Carlton, Franklin to Sydney, Griffen to GWS, Aish to Collingwood, etc, etc.

Careful about attaching "ceiling" never a measurable . In WA Dan Veneables "ceiling " was much touted currently he's excavating a basement .
