Are you SERIOUSLY advocating spending our first rounder on a 34 year old player for a best case scenario of 2 seasons?

Absolutely yes, my thought pattern is winning premierships which I know is not high on many people's agendas but we are in mode now. Act now to give yourself the best chance. Adding one of the best players in the league helps us now.
If we were rebuilding it would be different.

Yep - i'd do that as well.

I'm definitely on the bandwagon of getting him - but don't want to sell the farm to get him

His playing aside the midfield coaching and set up experience will be invaluable. I think he is a big get.

Mitchell isn't going to be the difference in winning a premiership we're still an a grade mid short

Can see it being 12 for Mitchell and 23 (the Mayne compo pick Freo give up for Hill), with 12 going to the Suns for JOM.

Think that's overpaying though.

I'd be reasonably happy with that and maybe they throw a player in as well Sicily or whoever.

Not overly but giving up pick 12 would not bother me.
Personally I would give up Masten and our last pick but that's just me.
You'd not be bothered by giving up a potential 10 year player for someone who will play maybe one or two seasons? I think the club needs to treat this trade like they are doing the Hawks a favour in taking on salary, so unless there is equivalent money going back the other way I don't think our high picks should be a consideration unless is a pick downgrade - eg. 12 and 33 for Mitchell, 14 and 35. A young Cam McCarthy is worth a 4 pick jump in the first round, so an old Mitchell may be worth 2.

Yep - but you don't trade for assistant coaches !

However even if we don't get him as a player - it seems a lay down misere that he coaches us from 2018 onwards. That is a great get

Is it likely that we would offer Sam a boat load more money as a coach so he didn't impact the salary cap as a player in the next couple of years?

Is there precedence on a player & club mutually tearing up their contract?
I am thinking it works out better for Hawthorn & WCE if Mitchell became a free agent.
WCE get Mitchell without giving up a pick, Haw probably get a 2nd round compensation pick.

I disagree, he is exactly what we are missing. Smart ball use, don't need to win the tap to get ball out of centre. Let me ask you, do you think the Hawks would of won 3 in a row without him?

We Kneed to learn how to throw like the previous 4 Premiers.
Sam is the man to coach us this.

In all seriousness, good move, cost little with mass upside and little downside.

We're doing Hawthorn a favour. They need this more than we do, and are boosting their list with young stars while we're taking a 34 year old off their hands.

I hope Vozzo realizes this and doesn't bend over.

The word potential is the problem, only a small percentage of draftees become the player you are talking about. No brainer to me, of course prefer to keep pick 12 but won't lose any sleep over the missing out on potential.

Hawks would have some interest in MacKenzie surely. They struggled with key forwards, Brand is still raw (and may want out) and there's not much else there besides Spud Frawley.

Straight swap for Mitchell?
