So after all the Petrie and Ballantyne hysterics we look very unlikely to get either. Ballantyne basically confirmed as staying at Freo and Petrie likely to be absolute last resort. Maybe our guys do have some clue as to what they're doing?

I'm feeling my call on the BnF night might come through. Happy times :)

This is turning out brilliantly!

To the draft!!
I'd like us to get another pick before our second rounder somehow. Reckon Darling might get us another decent pick?

There has never been anything from our club suggesting we wanted Ballantyne.

We were one of the first clubs to trade a pick we weren't intending to use for one of the compo picks that could be used any time in the next five years.
Which we used on Barrass?
We traded down in the first round to get a second round pick, when we'd identified a player (Sheed) we wanted who was likely to be available at the later pick.
I remember when we did that, Barrett blew a fuse because he was too dumb to figure out what we were doing.

If Ballantyne trade was all hype and no contact really happened then the journos and us supporters have been trolled good and proper :):$ ....at least the journos get paid for it , we on the other hand have been used and abused by poor average journos .

Just listening to Wallace and Barrett discussing Mitchell's request to move to Hawthorn

Mitchell leaving is due to salary constraints and this was linked to the millstone that is Tippett's contract which is hurting their salary cap for a player that hasn't performed commensurate to how well he is playing. So we have to be careful what we wish for when it comes to wondering why the club doesn't do more to attract established players - they come at a cost and sometimes they aren't worth it.

Hawthorn's success is still very much built on the likes of Mitchell, Hodge, Lewis, Gibson and Burgoyne who are all approaching the end of their careers. They're losing Hill, probably another quality player in a trade and Roughead may or may not get back (hopefully for him he does) and whilst they're picking up some players through trade and FA they aren't getting into the draft. They've got a fight on their hands to maintain their status as a contender in the next couple of years.

cant just stop now though FiveStrings
im not a supporter who wants those big name signings just to make me feel better during the offseason.

but as a massive organisation in a bad geographic spot we need to keep doing more.

I think this is a more reasonable statement than the one you started out with a few posts ago, and to be fair is probably something quite a number of fans would agree with, I know I certainly do.

We have to continue to push the envelope to find innovative ways to become a destination club, elements that outweigh the geographic/travel factor for players. Throwing our hands up and saying 'nobody wants to come here' or 'pity we aren't a successful Melbourne Club' is not an option. I'm not saying that is what the club is doing btw (I note some posters are thought), but at the end of the day, the proof is in the pudding and we haven't scored a major non-draft recruit in some time, if ever. Redden was a good start IMO. First of the non-WA player in what is his prime to nominate us as a destination.

Having said that, I think we have done as well as we could over the last few years in picking up players that potentially fill holes in our list with what has been available.

I hope we helped bush up his salary:):$:thumbsu::rainbow:
