Disclaimer: I really like the Mitchell trade especially for a third rounder. Big fan, etc. Will be really good for the Eagles, etc.

However if you believe that Clarkson did this (at all) out of the goodness of his heart then you probably believe in unicorns. Mitchell signed an extension this year in July. By his own admission he was caught off guard when Clarkson suggested it to him.

Are we expected to believe that Clarkson would offer up his B+F champion cause it was to Mitchell's benefit? By the sounds o it Mitchell already had the 2018 coaching gig sewn up. If they didn't need the cap space there is absolutely 0 chance Clarkson does this. Zip. Nada. Zilch.
My impression was that he knew Sam's intentions and desires. When he had to find cap room, he thought they might be able to work something out that was mutually beneficial.

You don't seriously think Hawthorn wouldn't have honoured his contract, do you?

They also just got Tom Mitchell and trading Sam means they don't need to change any of the magnets for the white board. Also, less confusing to only have one Mitchell. He's a practical man, Clarkson.

Definitely hawthorn get a benefit out of it without question and there's no way it would be happening if they didn't

But there's also a benefit for Mitchell with the timing or he wouldn't be agreeing to it

The cap space issue is why we don't have to pony up much to get the trade done

When you work through it, it's a very good trade for all involved

The only ones unhappy about it will be Hawks supporters seeing a favourite son playing in different colours which is understandable

I don't disagree with any of what you've said.

My point is that there have been a few comments that Clarkson/Hawks are doing this cause they want to do what's best for Mitchell but the reality is that it is almost certain that the need for cap space is their only driver.

Of course they would have honoured it, they would have just had to find the cap somewhere else, potentially a 'harder' exercise.

Parto isn't elite or full of class like Mitchell is. Hoping Parto can really develop under Mitchell!

Mitchell wasn't elite or full of class at Partington's age. He was running around in the VFL trying to get drafted.

His footy IQ alone is worth the trade. Slowly but surely bringing Hawthorn to WC. I wonder if Hodge is after a coaching role in the near future?

Hodge will work in media IMO cause everyone knows he`s a good bloke ..

BiggieSpartan, that has been well covered, even Sammy admitted it himself that its a win/win/win:
* Eagles - get an experienced A grade mid who will stick around and coach
* Hawks - release salary cap pressure and allow some of their older blokes to be phased out
* Sammy - has a career path after footy

i
Pros and cons of Mitchell
Pro
Gun player
Has that flogness that we lack
Kinda help solve our midfield situation
Becomes our first 300 gamer
We get a Brownlow medalist
Develops young mids
Midfield coach

Cons
He is 34
I feel like an idiot after the shit I said last night
Haggers got something right
I have to apologise to him

As you can see here the cons just outweighs the pros here.
i forgot to add to the pro list that Mitchell will no longer kill us everytime we play hawks. He averages 29.15 disposals against us.

Was it the dockers that brought in a few ex hawks players as coaches?

He also mentioned that his kids are at the right age for the school transition so moving won't be such a shock for them.
There is no way this deal will not go through, its just some finer details.

Just concentrating on Sam Mitchell's assistant coaching aspirations and it reflects on how highly rated Adam Simpson must be within the Hawthorn group. Mitchell is one of the best footballers of his generation - probably the smartest - and could've walked into an assistant coaching gig at any Melbourne club upon retiring. Yet he was all but signed up to move his family to the other side of the country to a city in which he absolutely no affiliations to coach underneath Simmo.

If we get Mitchell in he will become the 4th eagle to win a Brownlow if Jobe Watson is stripped of his on November 15.
:thumbsu:

If we're counting Mitchell then we need to also count 1983 Brownlow winner Ross Glendinning.

Testament to Simmo and the Eagles. As I have said before we are a very powerful and well respected organisation the nation over.

If this trade goes through you guys will definitely benefit from this trade, he should help your young mids while ripping apart other teams

Best of luck guys and hope sammy can get 1 last crack at a brownlow

Somehow I think his replacement(s) will do ok too. JOM and Tom both fit and firing will be dangerous.

Yeah it's a win win for both teams, and like you said with Tom and jom, and just maybe jor/Langford can step up now

I think round 3 pick would be fair trade

I read that as pick 3 and had the banhammer poised :p
