BiggieSpartan, that has been well covered, even Sammy admitted it himself that its a win/win/win:
* Eagles - get an experienced A grade mid who will stick around and coach
* Hawks - release salary cap pressure and allow some of their older blokes to be phased out
* Sammy - has a career path after footy

I'm tired of explaining my point but here goes again.

It is a win for all 3 parties, but the Hawks are (almost certainly) only doing this because they need the cap space and not because they are nice guys and think this is the best thing for Sammy.

Mitchell already pretty much had the coaching role in 2018 so this didn't impact his career path into coaching one way or the other.

That being said all that doesn't really matter. From a WCE point of view this is a huge win* and Mitchell will be great for us as a player and mentor over the next year or two.

*pending what we give up

Actually straight swap for masten might interest hawks. With Hill going and a chance of smith leaving, masto could fill an outside need for hawthorn. Hill probably has masto for pace, but masto is better kick going forward and the type of player that doesn't go missing as much (consistently gets 20 or more touches a game). Type of player that clarko could worke with and bring out the best out of.

Hawks want to free up cap space and get another pick.

Masten doesn't do that for them.

Mitchell, Shuey, Priddis, Gaff is a pretty strong top end midfield. Nothing compared to Cousins, Judd, Kerr, Fletcher though. Well Fletcher was nothing to write home about but he did have a good 2004. Simply better players though, as well as more diversity. The only complaint i can make about the Mitchell, Shuey, Priddis, Gaff tandem is a lack of leg speed. Outside of Shuey they're all scooters.

Mitchell at 34 is interesting.

The club should look at Sheppard stepping up into the midfield and rotate 3 way with Mitchell and Wellingham.

Shep was drafted as a mid, took his time maturing, looks great as a half back but we need more.

Sheppard, Hurn and Wellingham all need to pinch hit as dedicated mids. Simo wanted flexibility........well lets see some.

If we pay anything over pick 51 to those campaigners I won't be happy

shep to assume butlers role. shep is probably our best lockdown small/midsize defender.

I don't disagree with any of what you've said.

My point is that there have been a few comments that Clarkson/Hawks are doing this cause they want to do what's best for Mitchell but the reality is that it is almost certain that the need for cap space is their only driver.

It makes a difference that this idea would have been suggested by Simpson to Clarkson.

And lockdown small / mid defenders don't win you premierships.

Cole and Butler can cover that role.

We need more...............that's the point.

Shep could possibly deliver more...........he needs to be challenged.

However for mine those blowing their loads about how amazing our guys are for pulling this off need to realise that it sounds like we did very little, if anything, to convince him to come over early and from a playing list perspective this is short term. This isn't a case of 'suck shit haters we can convince big name eastern state players to move over here'.

I disagree, there are plenty of other contending clubs to join before thinking of relocating your entire family across the Nullabor. Why not join the Bulldogs or GWS? It's not like we're the only club which could afford him, or if Clarko just pulled our name out of a hat.

The recruitment team have clearly worked hard on getting the Hawks and Mitchell to nominate WC and, pending the final deal, deserve appropriate recognition.

No loads have been chugged yet, but they will be if and when Mitchell is racking up 30 quality touches a week next year.

If we're counting Mitchell then we need to also count 1983 Brownlow winner Ross Glendinning.
Glendinning wasn't an eagles player when he was awarded the Brownlow. Mitchell will be, so it counts.

I think it is more about Sammy feeling like he is giving something back to the Hawks and perhaps being able to mentor some of our young guys. Enough for me, couldn't care less about whether the Hawks are being nice guys.

Yes, but he gets exposure earlier which is good for his kids as they start school next year. Saves having to upheave primary school kids across the country.

Mitchell and simmo are good mates and they planned on moving here anyways iirc

He also mentioned that his kids are at the right age for the school transition so moving won't be such a shock for them.
There is no way this deal will not go through, its just some finer details.
At least quote the edited version of my post where I was humorous.
