I'm really hoping we snare Vardy or even Minson, not keen on Petrie.
I suspect we'll do a late trade for Vardy for peanuts and that'll rule out Petrie

Bear in mind we are already pretty stocked down back with Sheppard, Hurn and Wellingham. Plus the aforementioned Butler and the possibility of other players spending time down there such as Mitchell, Jetta, Yeo, Hill and Duggan.

Bottom line is another half-back flanker isn't a screaming need for us.

Well, I was thinking he could cover a small defender role that Butler already plays.

Despite that, Butler's body has somehow aged like wine and he played 20 games this season, so it isn't a necessity for the time being.

Would honestly rather play Cole there if Butler isn't in the side, thought he showed plenty in the games he played this year. We need to start developing our younger guys, not keep topping up with average crap from other teams

Marley was really good in 2015 from what I've read.

Do you think Tom Cole could step up in his second year if given the chance? I'm a bit worried he might follow Duggan and get a case of the second year blues.

we probably have enough depth in that area tbh and marley was never that great. Duggan could hyped a bit the previous year. and came back from a pcl injury and it kinda impacted his year. We can potentially carry cole if he earns it as the rest f our defence is experienced.

I think he should have played a bit more this year. I'd like to see him play at least 10 next year and I think he's up to holding down a hbf spot. Don't see him struggling like Duggan did this year, doesn't have a knee injury to work his way back from for a start

I'm really surprised our 2017 picks haven't been part of attempted trades.

You know, others may gamble on the whole no Naitanui, no West Coast and that gamble netting them a higher pick.

Few clubs are taking chances gambling theirs. (hawks / power)
It could've cost Freo dearly for McCarthy, did cost them an early second for Bennell. Collingwood also paid a second high first rounder for Treloar after this years finish.

Only way Marley Williams ends up on our list is as a DFA with our last rookie spot after every single ruck in the country gets picked up before we can nab one. Also, after the person pushing the buttons at the draft has a stroke and thinks they are selecting Diesel Williams.

Can't even tell if half of these trades are good or not because they involve so many other swaps.

Melbourne love overpaying for Essendon players though

Pickering said yesterday that we have cap issues. I think it was him. It was on tradio in regards to us not offering brown a new contract. Not sure if it was mentioned. Not that surprising I suppose.

This doesn't really mean much though by itself. Given there is only a $530 difference between the floor and the ceiling of the cap this doesn't really provide much flexibility for clubs, most clubs would be walking close to the edge of 'tight cap' scenario each year. It's how they've structured their longer term contracts for their top 25% of players that could potentially cause problems in terms of further inflexibility. Further, with the ability to renegotiate contracts and move payments forward/back a 'tight cap' is (or can be) just a short term challenge that requires some creative renegotiations.

This is part of where the list manager shows his/her worth I guess, by being creative (not Carlton creative) in managing and renegotiating contracts to be able to meet all their list needs while staying within the bands of the cap.

Edit: Ninja edit on multi quote.

Wonder if we could make a late play for JOM? Our first 2 picks this year?

Deal between Hawks and GC looks like make fall over.

Defensive forwards still need to score goals as thats what they get paid for but Cripp's other role is his defensive work.
he gets goals and applies pressure but he ain't a genuine crumber and we don't have one. Josh hill was brought in for that and yes he does get the odd opportunistic goal here and there but he plays more like a taller player. Its why we need a genuine crumber, someone that can make some thing out of nothing or thrive when our talls get curtailed.

I think the issue is partly personnel and partly game style.

You can have Eddie B, Puoppolo or whoever classifies as classy crumbers and you'd still struggle with the way we brought the ball into our forward 50 a lot of the time. The shallow, dirty ball into our f50 to JK or JD when they were outnumbered with our 'smalls' still out of position having played their role in the zone was nothing short of stupid.

Where they do come in handy is at stoppages inside f50, when it is a shitfight to get hands on ball, but when you do, goal sense and finishing under pressure trumps everything else. We don't have that player that can operate in tight space quickly and effectively. But in order to create stoppages inside f50, you have to have a good defensive setup and forwards that can apply very good defensive pressure. I think we have the latter and they are made infinitely better when we have the former.

29 and a 9 pick downgrade out of the 50's is a very good deal for Melbourne. Hibberd is a good player, he will do well at Melbourne
