My main concern is depth, if we lose players and replace them with draft picks only and then cop injuries we will be stuffed.

Interesting that Terry Wallace has just tweeted the Demons and the Crows are right in the mix for O'Meara.

I hope he is right.

Except for 2-3 clubs every other club has concerns with their depth

I'd love it to be true but it would be bloody hard to beat Gold Coasts offer for #1 pick. They are willing to trade pick 4 in this year's draft and some combination of compensation picks that they have traded for last year.

There is not a hell of a lot we would be able to offer to get the #1 pick and anything less than the #1 pick in the mini draft won't get you Jaeger O'Meara.

I think it would be a major get if we pull it off but I can't see us having the sort of chips that Gold Coast and possibly Melbourne can come to the table with.

Unless of course we are willing to trade a major player to GWS which would be very unlike us.

Maybe we aren't going for O'Meara but 2nd pick. Where would Toumpas go next year?

Unless the Crows exceed all expectation in 2012 the Davis compo will be higher than pick 15 next year in a better draft. IMO pick 15 wouldn't be enough to buy the Davis compo by itself.

Perhaps your recruiters could offer 15 + Bock compo for Maric and Davis compo. Would be a fairer deal. Maric for 15 and compo upgrade.

That is a fascinating scenario and one I've spent about 15 minutes considering

I'd like to explore that. Hardly anyone else would, but if you chucked in your second rounder (32, which you'd barely need given the first rounder you're going to get from the hawks or someone else for gunston) then that has real merit for both of us

You retain a compo pick, go into this draft with 3 good first round picks and we get someone we want and have to back ourselves to draft well at 32+

It's not a complicated trade, but it's a sophisticated one

Good stuff.

I would suggest that our compo pick is worth more to them than GC's pick 4. Melbourne have the same to offer. Throw in Armstrong.

Has anyone clarified how the comp pick works, is it the pick after we finish or after the team that might have it? If it's the latter it's basically pick 2 in the super draft.

Our depth is not much different to West Coast, and they achieved fourth. Gaff, Shuey, Smith, McGinnity, Masten and McKenzie are all considered at least part of their squad of 25, while all being quite young and inexperienced. And this was in a year where they had significantly fewer injuries than any other club.

What's more, they also had a heavy reliance on Embley, Kerr, Glass, Nicoski A Selwood and Cox who aren't exactly spring chickens themselves.

If we do find ourselves in a position where we are playing several raw, inexperienced draftees, this won't necessarily be detrimental, provided they are quality. Beats going down the St Kilda path and playing mature-aged plodders at the expense of the younger blokes.

It the next pick after the team that has it so if we traded it to a side that finished bottom they would have pick one and pick two.

I know this might sound ridiculous, but Ive heard a lot of people refer to the "mini draft" what does this exactly mean?

I would say the Phil Davis compensation pick is off the table unless we gain access to a pick 4 pick to get Wingard (or a mini draft pick for Kennedy or Toumpas)

I would be staggered if in this case our compo pick is based on where GWS finished.

Think about it, if this was the case, GWS would be trading for compo picks only because that would mean that they would dominate the draft next year.

Say Melbourne trades the their compensation pick for GWS for a young player already on their list and Geelong and us do the same for either a young player, this year's pick or a pick in the mini draft.

In this case id GWS finished last next year they would have 4 first picks in the draft provided they activated their compo picks next year. That would make a mockery of the whole thing.

I am confident that the compensation pick is tied up to the original club as opposed to the one it gets traded to.

Over the next 2 years, GWS have access to trade 4 17 year olds to try and improve their level of senior players. I think by 2 pm on Friday they will need to have that finalized and then they or the clubs involved will hold a mini draft to see who gets the 17 year olds.

The 17 year olds can not play in 2012 but will be on the AFL list.

It doesn't really say but what you say sounds right.

"The club has the right to on-trade its compensation selection to another club.
If the club on-trades its compensation selection to another club, the selection may be used in that year's NAB AFL Draft Selection meeting, or in any other year up to the 2015 NAB AFL Draft.(The AFL's ruling in full)

To suggest the club that obtains the compensation pick can use it where they finish would be madness. It would have to revert back to the original club of choice.

Stiffy you are assuming one thing, the AFL thought ahead and haven't ****ed it up again.

Almost positive that this is correct

Again, forgive me, but therefore if the market believes the crows won't be too flash next year, your Davis compo pick has a higher value than a band 2 given, for example, collingwood

It makes sense to trade it when the expectation is that you will struggle to challenge, as the consideration you receive should be highest

I'll leave your board now. Have a good week

True...and they say assumption is a mother of all **** ups! :D

It might just be too logical for AFL to consider it.

They thought far enough to say that the compensation pick can be traded but no one knows if they have though which club's placing does the club "link" to.

It would be a bigger joke than the whole not limiting poaching to mature players thing so it wouldn't be surprising. Demetriou would bend over and take it up the clacker to make sure that GWS and GC are raging success stories.

Tape and Gorringe have signed contract extensions. Interestingly Day hasn't signed a contract extension yet.

Why don't we ever do that with our 1st year players?
Pretty sure we have done it with Tippett and also might have done it with Dangerfield. I am certain that both were give 3 year deals straight up which is rare these days.

Just on this Jaeger O'Maera bidding, if we can get the Bock compo pick from Tigers, I would be willing to package both Davis and Bock pick for the #1 pick in the mini draft only. For the #2 pick the Davis compo pick only. Still not convinced that would come within the ball park of what GC are prepared to offer.

Are there any players we can get GWS to prelist for us then trade for a small upgrade?
Players like Templeton, Suckling etc. who we might want, but don't want to run the risk of missing out on. GC were prepared to do it with Mzungu, Faulks, Krakouer and a few others, GWS already have done with Morris and Clarke.

We do, many of our high draft picks get signed to 3 year contracts instead of the standard 2 year rookie contract. I believe Sellar, Tippett, Dangerfield, Otten, Davis and McKernan all initially signed 3 year deals, others may have as well, Gunston obviously didn't, unfortunately we can't force young players to sign these extended contracts.
