Was in town today and popped in to watch the Cats train for a little while.

Not alot to report as it was mainly a fitness and weights session. There was no more than 3 footballs on the ground the whole time and they were mainly out there to keep the players interested in between running drills.

I missed the start but when I got there there was a small group of players doing a series of run throughs and the rest of the group was inside.

The small group of players doing the running were:

N.Ablett
Blake
Callan
Gamble
Grima
Gardiner
Harley
Ottens
Owen

They were doing a series of 40m sprints and were working quite hard. The sprints were being run through a series of mechanical gates which video taped the players running action and recorded times. The times were then immediately relayed to a laptop and the fitness advisers. The players were tested at the end of the session with 6 x 40 metre run throughs at full intensity with 5 second breaks in between each run through. The players had to try and maintain there time over the 6 sprints. If they didn't the assistant fitness guy (not sure of his name) would put a rocket up them.

All the players worked hard and looked to be buggered at the end of it.

Nath looks slow but his times were comparable with the rest of the group and he worked hard which was a good sign.

Blake was flogging himself

Callan, Harley and Charlie were the most impressive.

And I am not just saying this because it is preseason and people get excited but Ottens looked great. He looks leaner than last year and his pace, stamina and effort was excellant. All good signs for the big fella.

Once these players finished testing the main group came out and did some light running and stretching. I left before they finshed because it was pretty boring without any footys out.

Only players missing from the main group were all the first year players, King, Scarlett, S.Hunt, SJ (for obvious reasons now) and Chappy. Chappy just walked laps whilst the main group trained.

I went along to try and get a look at the new blokes but they weren't sighted which was a shame, but it was good to see the rest of the group working pretty hard. Obviously in the middle of a solid running and testing period.

Thanks for the update ezbian. If you go watch the cats train again in the future, more updates like that one would be awesome!!

im a bit concerned about ur report on nath being slow. to me he looked pretty slow in his games for geelong so far, so was hoping this pre-season he could rele improve in that area.

Unfortunately acceleration of the mark is not something you can improve greatly(agreed consensus is about 15%). No amount of sprint training or leg weights will help.

So his speed off the mark will be as it is now. His top end speed can be improved through technique changes, etc.

If he plays mainly across half forward, which IMHO he should, explosive power is not as important.

Someone like Tommy Hawkins however, if he plays at FF, quick leads off the mark are needed alot more than further up the ground. This is what i see as one of his best aspects is his explosive power(National high jump and shot put representative) that added with his height and already matured frame.....fair to say i'm looking forward to seeing these 2 dominating defences over the next 10 years.
