We look lethal when Jordy is playing that ballsitic midfield role breaking tackles and smashing into contests. Agreed he looked alot more balanced and covered the ground well looking at the highlights. The thought of Mitchell feeding out to Jordy and an emerging Naicos is getting me excited
Yep. Those 3 in the middle offer everything.

Can someone refresh my memory.
Who's the giant black ruckman that was recruited? He also wears glasses like Coxy.
Still young I think and looks super athletic.
Why didn't he play?

I found this on the AFL site..

Nick Daicos

Let's be clear, Daicos is already one of the best young players in the game. But after a second pre-season under his belt – and a full pre-season at that – the 20-year-old has all the tools to enter the elite bracket sooner rather than later. And if it doesn't happen this year, it won't be too far off. Daicos played mainly across half-back last year and produced one of the most impressive debut seasons since John Coleman, winning the Rising Star after polling the maximum amount of votes. Many expected him to finish high in the Copeland Trophy and even push for the All-Australian squad. He finished seventh in the best and fairest and missed out on the AA squad, but he is more than capable of changing that in just his second season. – Josh Gabelich

very little competition for that spot , although for me Murphy is the better defender. Frampton has him covered for height and strength .
this assessment is spot on. Frampton may be bigger, Murphy is simply a better footballer. Much much better 1 on 1 defender

From what I can see, he is training with the VFL team. Not on the offiicial list but can play VFL. Isn't in full training yet from the times ive gone down, but lets hope he can play some games.

Nice clip from you towards “not the most reliable analyst” (me).
Forgot to say thanks for all your updates yesterday, mate.
Much appreciated, if not always obvious.

No. And I like Murphy’s efforts. But he lacks composure at times and throws up a lot of dump kicks that cost us.

The boy does have big cojones, playing undersized.

Eventually there will be room for both. I suspect Howe is not long for our best 22.

Watched him multiple times at Wang.
He's capable and will adapt in time.
Nerves are a funny thing

Will be better for the run
That's largely what I was about to write.
Honestly, I wanted them to take others at that pick, but I think over time we'll see why they were so keen to get Richards.

My observations from watching the game a few seats down from Bigfooty luminaries Jen and Dave

Structure and style
- Quick transition of the ball by hand was excellent. A trademark of last year, it was great to watch again. It was where the 'White' team, who won the game on the scoreboard about 14-11 = 95 vs 11.3=69 was able to dominate.
On paper, the Black team initially had the more experienced/superior midfield (Cox/Mitchell/Adams/DeGoey, Sidebottom) yet the run of the 'Whites' (Daicos, Crisp, Lipinski, J Daicos) got the better of things and exposed their opponents for pace and movement.

- I think we now have an exciting mix of smaller forwards in Hill, McCreery, Elliott, Ginnivan. None as productive as Charlie Cameron in isolation but will be a handful for opposition teams to cover all of them and they will apply pressure pretty well with Hill likely adding to this in a manner which Wilbur hasn't in the past.

- Defensive structure of the White team was good and they worked well in numbers as well as spreading well. Interesting to see Moore and Frampton on the same (Black) team as a means of getting them used to playing together I expect.

- Risks for this season -still think clearances and connection with Rucks and Mids needs some work

Highlights package did enunciate the best moments of the game adequately, albeit didn't show the extent of the run and carry game that was on show across both teams.

Individual player thoughts
1 Lipinski - I can tend to underrate him a little. Runs effectively as a link man and finishes his work well. Industrious without being outstanding
2 DeGoey - did some nice things. Showed how fit he is a couple of times to work hard and push forward and glimpses of his genuine speed and strength
3 Quaynor - dominated the game in 1Q and, along with Whisper, was BOG for mine. Mopped up down back but also hit the scoreboard and was important as a link player. Gone to another level in 2023 and could finish top 3-5 in the Copeland
4 Maynard - has presence, but was relatively subdued. Only spent a minimal time in the centre but mainly off half back
5 Elliott - fairly quiet I thought. Moore looked for him on kick outs and in field play. Showed one nice piece of physicality to pressure N Daicos.
6 Mitchell - Cox looked for him much of the night. You see him lacking leg speed, but he runs good patterns to get involved. Nice centre clearance and then goal on the line on the 3Q siren
7 J Daicos - if he paid his brother each time that Nick was able to find him, he'd be a lot poorer! Worked his wing well as a link man
8 Bianco - on a wing opposed to J Daicos. Didn't get a lot of the ball. Wasn't as creative as I'd like either. Sold TMitchell into trouble (Adams set upon him and then kicked a nice goal from the spill) with a handball having taken a nice intercept mark. Lost some confidence from that.
9 Noble - other than one turnover kick which was picked off, Noble was his usual very industrious self. Those who think he plays 2's this season underestimate him.
10 Pendles - not as dominant as historically but he takes the offseason games a bit easier. Some characteristic time and space and neat ball use by foot
11 McStay - had real presence. Definitely got the better of Moore. Perhaps kicked 3
12 Wilson - bobs up and finished a couple of nice left foot goals. Cameo appearances
13 Adams - overshadowed by N Daicos, but the highlight was the pressure effort and goal vs Mitchell
14 Cameron - sidelined
15 Kreuger - sidelined
16 Allan - I was a little disappointed. Didn't feature in the linking play through the centre in a way that I may have hoped and had seen him due in match sim
17 Frampton - had a real presence in Q1, working in tandem with Moore on the Black team. Moves and kicks well and is an effective interceptor. Like
18 Macrae - sidelined
19 Draper - not sure he was wearing this number. Didn't notice him much and was a little disappointed. Didn't rotate in the Centre Bounces as I'd have expected
20 Will Kelly - one nice mark early. Shanked a kick from a mark later in the game. Depth
21 Ruscoe - not very noticeable, even with bright red boots on
22 Sidebottom - busy early but not as damaging as a linking runner as I'd have hoped. Maybe, like Pendles, he was taking it a little easier
23 Hill - did some exciting things, particularly early. Adds genuine X-factor and bite to the forward line. Expect him to play Rd 1 barring injury
24 Ryan - pretty quiet. Slow with his ball use, but may take the time to pick that up
25 Crisp - more of a link man in passages. Didn't have a lot of influence I didn't think
26 McInnes - looked dangerous and did a couple of nice things, but forwards for the black team didn't have the easiest job.
27 Murley - quiet and looks a bit overwhelmed and fumbly. Did kick one nice goal though
28 Murphy - was solid in defence for team white and worked well with Howe and others, but some of his rushed bombed kicks gained from sitting at the back of the structure let his work down. Would be nice for him to find a side step
29 Richards - has some genuine toe and exposed Josh Daicos for speed in a chase on centre wing at one stage. Seemed a bit panicked/overawed at times, but I kind of noticed him more than Ryan or Allen amongst the draftees
30 Moore - looked rusty with his decisioning and 1 on 1. Well beaten by Reef and McStay as the tall forwards from team White. Probably pulled up from full attacking aerial moves (spoils and marks) in an act of preservation for himself and teammates
31 McCreery - didn't notice him too much but played out the square for team Black
32 Wilbur - shift to half back a found himself against Hill at times. Did some nice link work and doesn't panic
33 Ginnivan - kicked 1 goal before limping off at half time with a gash on his knee. Surprised with the extent of his reaction to his injury. Thought he feared his season was over (like he'd done an ACL) or that he'd been shot/received a severe corkie. Glad he'll live to fight another dayf
35 N Daicos - BOG. Very damaging at clearances by hand, good run and carry and that long range goal!
36 Harrison - sidelined
37 Markov - his leg speed was notable, but his selections with kicking wasn't optimal at times
38 Howe - still has good speed and intent. Not dominant in the air, but a solid game. Still Best 22 for mine
39 Begg - (sidelined) but Husthwaite kicked a could of nice goals in Q2 in that number
40 Johnson - quiet but kicked one in Q1 and missed another(?) after Hill found him
41 Mihocek - did a couple of nice things to bob up for his usual 2 goals. McStay had more presence at the other end
43 Dean - sidelined
44 Steene - battled in the ruck against Cox and drew some free kicks
45 Carmichael - kicked 3 as a dangerous leading forward who made the most of his chances. Good size but has slimmed down and looks fitter. A useful footballer without being elite. Will be very good at VFL level and will be handy when he plays seniors. Wish he'd keep his hairstyle and colour constant so that he is easier to notice!
46 Cox - dominant big man aerially at both ends of the ground (kicked 2), albeit his ruckwork connection wasn't great given his dominance. Looked for Mitchell a lot but was picked off by his opposing midfielders. I'd still like to see him as our starting first ruck.
Cheers, AP.
Love your work!

Haven’t heard any comments on last night’s jumper. Any change to our stripes usually brings on howls of derision.

FWIW - I liked it. For a practice game. Simple but effective graphic.

I suspect you’re wrong about Howe. The only way he drops out of the senior team is through injury.

It hurts knowing we could have drafted Scully in his place, given he’s supposedly standing out at Port this pre-season.
Unlike you to go so early on pre-season form and track watchers from another club?!?

I’m very much in the camp if he’s not a required type of player….but even I’m baulking at calling it so early against a player at another club in another state!

Happy to revisit when Scully is tearing it apart….

But as it stands, pretty fair leap from wang 1sts to AFL. Let’s see how he adjusts this year making the step to VFL first…..

Cheers mate :thumbsu:
A bit of light reading to catch up on with regards to this Pre-season thread.
Most so far seems extremely positive which is aces, looking forward to a great 2023 for the Pies.
Hoped Big Rou would have been sighted at the club this preseason
May play as an over-ager at the Oakleigh Charges this year @ 19 & get a chance in the VFL during the year, unsure.
