Hmm… just back from training and I wouldn’t be holding out hope of rookie spot for the new volleyball triallist. Big difference in skills, build and running requirements. Hope they’re looking a bit further than this.

Elsewhere it was a very impressive training session from the boys. Only Darcy and De Goey missing, plus McCreery and N Daicos due to injury / resting. As Jen has already posted (insta), IQ dominated the beep test, which several senior players were rested from. Jacob Ryan also did v well, coming in 4th. The boy can run. Bobby Hill was one of the first to drop out though..

There was even some ‘skinny ground’ match like simulation to witness, which was a lovely surprise, and v much enjoyed by the boys.

Other quick notes…

Bobby Hill - Looks trimmer v early pics after arriving, and despite not having a tank (above), looked v quick and skilful in close drills. Lightning quick hands and feet. No surprises maybe, but we do need players like this, and it was nice to see.

Ruscoe - looked good. Kicking was nice, running well, and was busy in all drills / match sim. Obviously knows it’s make or break this year.

Frampton - looked good in Small passages of play. Out marked / out bodied Darcy Cameron, and was busy getting possessions, transitioning out of defence. Has a great build, and at 6’ 7”, I hope he is the answer. Decisions weren’t faultless, and kicks aren’t as reliable as Darcy, but he trained well and has to be a v good chance for round 1.

Reef - Looked good up forward and took a great contested grab + almost one other vs Murphy.

Allan - looked busier today and a bit more vocal. May have been told to get more involved, but is starting to come out of his shell. Looks to be enjoying himself.

McStay - looked good again. Nice quick leads, solid build but still agile, good body work, one v one marks, great vice like grabs, converting to goal. Justifying the contract at this stage imo. & strong grabs, build and LF kicks reminding me of the old days watching Tarrant in training…. Jftr

Krueger - love the look of him, and has quick movement, but not as prominent as McStay. Reckon CHF is McStay’s at this stage. Experience showing out here.

Wilson - also looked good in long drills. Has a lovely kick on him, and had great vision. Got an applause from the players for a ‘no look’ type foot pass to a leading player at pace.

Johnson - struggled a bit with his hands in drills. Obv not his strong suit, and not sure he is a great trainer, as looked a bit lackadaisical. Will monitor

Overall the boys are looking v slick, with experienced campaigners making the transition drills look seem-less (Pendles, Maynard, Mitch, Steele, Elliott, Ginni, Quaynor, etc), with great delivery by foot also on show. Feeling amongst the group looking as good as ever.

Hasn’t it been repeatedly stated that Crossley is very happy at Southport, and is not the least bit interested in returning to Victoria to play football?

Has it? I haven't heard. Seems dumb to pass up an AFL wage

Hill not having a tank is a worry and opportunity. I feel this is something you can build. They need to push him to be able to run out midfield minutes.

Yes, agree. Has obviously had an interrupted 2021, but atm a winger he is not. Forward pocket is the only hope at this stage, until he can hopefully demonstrate some of Bradley’s running genes.

Along with footy smarts and skills, running ability is so crucial to claiming your spot in the team. If you fall over in one of these areas, the whole game plan / structure falls down. And there are plenty of up and coming kids who are keen to prove that they can be a regular part of this structure…

The quickness and natural skills you cannot teach though. And he’s prob the quickest guy at the club - with his hands and feet - already…

Need more then Just Running to make it
Don’t worry, has more than that. Kid looks impressive. Big lad, and Doesn’t need any encouragement to get on his wheels and find space. Reckon Hine fell in love with his work ethic… and has some skills to go with it.

Hmmm, not for me. His highlights are okay but there's no way they'd be putting together a bad string. If we're signing a Cat B ruck and have Begg AND have this dude on the list, it seems like overkill for a position where mediocrity can suffice provided the clearance is won. It's not like he'd be ready this year, anyway.

On checking posts, my memory may be faulty on this. Appears he may have nominated himself for the mid season draft - which is not indicative of ‘no intention of returning to AFL’.

My apologies for misleading the brethren.

Club don't Rate Rucks very Highly

Yeah I’d prefer a mature aged rookie recruit. He looks 3 years off physically, plus the running and skills requirements. & we need immediate backup. Begg still a v handy option, and is a strapping lad, but we are light on for bodies big enough for ruck duties. Unless GW or Fly are keen to release the beast that is Darcy Moore…

Agreed, bring back McMahon 198cm and surely has more growth then the two potential rucks training on.

Hills cousin Bradley is the fastest player in the AFL. I've heard Bobby Hill is very fast.. before his cancer scare..

Jen are you worried about DM30 being MIA?

People (me) are panicking. Lol.
Would be nice if the club responded to supporters asking why he was MIA. Hopefully just illness, alot going around at the moment. Hopefully we see him soon.
