I could be wrong (may be way off), but I think the afl illicit drug policy is that if he was tested and caught with illicit drugs in his system he would be given a warning which would remain anonymous (so long as it wasn’t performance enhancing). If it happened a second time he would be diagnosed with a substance abuse disorder and treated for a mental health disorder which would also remain anonymous and as he was seeking treatment would be exempt from future testing for that substance. So the whole thing is a set up to make sure no one gets named and no one gets three strikes. If this is the case, Ginnivan’s crime is getting caught publicly, not actually taking an illicit substance.

Keen to hear from others if I understand the afls illicit drug policy currently?

His crime is yes, being caught publicly and playing for Collingwood

To claim this has anything to do with him playing for Collingwood is ridiculous. Bailey Smith got the same suspension for the same thing. The last time I looked Smith doesn’t play for us, unfortunately.

You are right. Though The drugs policy is more to do with protecting the AFL’s brand than the actual player.

Once something is out in the open though, the clubs are then forced to act to protect their own brand. It’s all a massive PR exercise..

Unlike you to go so early on pre-season form and track watchers from another club?!?

I’m very much in the camp if he’s not a required type of player….but even I’m baulking at calling it so early against a player at another club in another state!

Happy to revisit when Scully is tearing it apart….

But as it stands, pretty fair leap from wang 1sts to AFL. Let’s see how he adjusts this year making the step to VFL first…..
Maybe, but I was very much of the opinion that Scully was a low risk high reward option at that point of the draft, and I’m firmly in the camp of country footballers being a rookie/msd option. Here’s hoping he proves me wrong.

There were a few clubs that had their eye on richards if he lasted beyond our pick. Geelong for one who had a pick 4 spots below us. They wanted him in 2021, but he didn't have a manager so had no idea of their interest.

Could someone give a report on how Frampton played the other night. Haven’t seen any mentions of him.
Mosts reports he did well. Looked up to the level of the night. In his interview he said he was a little rusty and played a lot on McStay who he described as very strong. Was combined on same backline as Darcy You would think he will line up with Darce against Blues on Fri. Will be a good test for him

Media describing it as ‘Crisis mode’ is complete drivel. I think the club will be ok somehow

We will survive.🙃

As for Ginni, I’ll be surprised if he’s made to play a game in the VFL before he returns to the seniors. He’s that good.

Some might not agree, but the punishment is what it is and then straight back into the team.

Similar thoughts
my pref would have been to take Cats 1st for Ollie
Then
  • Allen at 19 R1
  • Barnett at R1 (Ollie pick)
  • hopefully get Ryan R2 at 30 or move up

I think the only thing is that he would be without match fitness, but hopefully his continued training will help with that.

Why do you think hes that good?
His goals per game is roughly the same as AJ for instance
I think hes actually going to struggle to come back because his replacements are going to be doing so well

Someone posted an article on here recently about Ginni’s stats for 2022. I don’t want to misrepresent the article, but my recollection is that he rated in the top 4 or 5 small forwards in the competition for his age and experience.

Plus my own eyes, watching how he works in games, and his footy smarts combined with goal sense, tell me he’s that good.

I love AJ too, but he’s played far fewer games, so not a realistic comparison for goals per game.

He'll be back

When asked how he would handle any backlash on his return to the field, Ginnivan was up-beat.

“It wouldn’t be the first time someone has said something bad to me, so it’ll fuel my fire and hopefully I just continue to get better out on the field,” he told Seven News.

“One incident off the field hopefully doesn’t change what I am like on the field. I am going to be confident and get under the people’s skin like I always do.”

P.S. I hope you’re right about his replacements playing well, as we will be purring along if that’s the case.

True the suspensions are rightly identical.

It’s however because he played for Collingwood and has a high profile like Smith that this footage was even taken in the first place, or deemed to be newsworthy by the press.

Look I really love Ginni too. I see his smarts as being elite. For instance i love the smart little things he does like knowing when to hold on to the ball and take a tackle to protect the lead, rather than take a wild shot and give up the ball. I love the way he knows when to block for others. etc

But I also see a player that isnt quite quick enough to lay tackles in the fwd line, and I also see a player that often gets tackled with the ball because he isn't quite quick enough, and some scoring opportunities definitely go begging.

So while I am bullish on him overall, I just am not sure that he is a total "lock" the way some see it. Although I really hope he gets to that point.

The other thing I see is that having a very fast forward line may be our best overall approach, where the total exceeds the sum of its part. So even though Ginni is a better forward than say Mcreery, having a combo of all our fastest forwards may still be the best for the team

He’s still young and will develop more physical strength. His smarts and football brain will likely take him a long way. Leg speed isn’t everything.

Any estimates i make are based not on any great knowledge of the kid himself at this point. The few snippets on the tape from yesterday were encouraging though.

I trust history as a teacher more than most though and when a kid goes relatively high in the draft, has substantial physical traits to go with his footy he is one a club will be expecting to play early. You like the eyeball assessment i think so i understand your reservations but its good to know your eyeball liked what it saw yesterday.

I remember a Josh Daicos handball in in 1st preseason game in his 1st season we both commented on as showing a talent above. For a while i worried that may have been a wrong assessmsnt but it was the 1st nugget of a rich vein. Lets hope the same for Allen

I'm surprised how bullish you are already based on draft pick. In terms of history, he went in a speculative hit and miss range

He is actually stronger and fitter this preseason. Looked better than last year. He’ll come back from this better

I have no doubt about that. What people misunderstand about players like Ginnivan is how much they actually love football. swan was the same. It makes a hell of a difference. Others like Stevo… not so much, they just fell into it because they were good at it.
