Not sure I believe it but there have been suggestions that there's a Salah tax in there. Apparently Roma feel they let Mo go for too little last summer.

Either way I agree it seems a huge amount of money when you consider the current world record fee for a keeper (Ederson) is just over half what we're looking like paying for Alisson, but given the rate at which the market has inflated over the last few years it's almost impossible to keep track of what 'fair value' is any more.

That would be incredible but I am leaning towards it being possible. Seeing Salah have the season he did would have annoyed Roma for letting him go for what they did. Could see them trying to get you to pay more based purely on that.

That's exactly it. People were up in arms about the 75 million on VVD but he has improved us immeasurably. So I dont care about the money spent. Plus its about time the club started to splash the cash as we have been in negative net spend for years.

If they 'flopped' they wouldn't still be starting would they (or still a main part of the squad in Alby's case)?

I would think even opposition fans would be pretty impressed by how successful Klopp/FSG's re-build has been, especially if you believe the suggestion that Rodgers gave over full control of transfers to FSG at the start of 15/16. Karius might count as the only failure at 5.5M and he could still count as a good #2 (I don't think we'll move on three keepers in one window, and I suspect Ward is more fed up with bench time than Karius, who may want to make up for UCL).

If we sell Migz, the only members of 13/14 left will be Hendo and Studge. In that time there hasn't really been anyone cycling through as a buy/flop/sell, with the exception of the striker position. Benteke fits the bill, and then Ings & Origi may follow suit and leave having only made a small impact on the team. But all of them were bought before Klopp started. Firmino was too, though, to be fair. Point is that Klopp has shown loyalty, and so has created a tight squad with a real mix of free, cheap, expensive, and silly money players.

But it's surely a sign of the 'boom bust' that we are second fav ($5.50) to win the league. I guess the logic there is how good defensively we were once VVD arrived, and that we can build momentum which might make us a real threat, whereas Mourinho's war of attrition style doesn't look like getting a big points return (that's not having a dig - Lukaku and Pogba both looked great in the WC; maybe the goals will start pouring in...).

Berahino had an 8 week suspension. It doesn't add up to me.

Clyne had a back injury in a pre-season game in July, then was going to come back in November but had a setback and had to have an operation to put him out until February and then got fit enough to make the bench in March then play in April. 7-8 months out seems an odd timing for a ban. If it was a 6 month ban he would have been back training a month or 2 earlier than he should have, a 9 month ban would have just about ruled him out for the season.

That's a huge amount for a goalkeeper that isn't recognized as one of the top 3 or 4 in the world.

The top 5 most-expensive players in the world have all gone for over EU100M, and only one of them wasn't within the last 12 months (Pogba, one season earlier, which is what prompted Klopp's comment that Steve is bitter about above). It's almost like prices have gone up...?

Courtois goes cheaper, but only has a year left on his contract and he loves him some Spain. DDG would go for more, but did spill one in the WC. Lloris did too, but I think you're already in debatable territory on 'best keepers' with Lloris, and both him and Neuer are 32. I'd assume Ederson is right up there in the top handful, but then Alisson surprisingly keeps him out of goal with Brazil. Alisson is only one year older and broke into the squad when 23. Young keepers breaking through at that age and getting people excited are who? Oblak had his buy out clause doubled from the already high EU100M. Ederson went for a world record fee. Kepa at Bilbao ended up staying put (he's a short keeper too, in the Pickford/Navas range).

I've made this point before, but maybe it was only in the LFC thread. You don't get subbed as keeper. So if you are good, and want to play, you move to a club that will play you 95% of the time. Clubs with big money have been flirting with this idea of having two good keepers, but it rarely lasts long because most keepers want to be out there on game day. So it's not that hard to get a solid keeper and that has traditionally kept prices down in that position.

What has changed is the idea of the ball-playing keeper. As much as people talked about Barca's tiki-taka, it's the press that was their main weapon. They wanted the ball back as soon as they lost it. With a lot of teams pressing now, people have decided a ball-playing keeper is one way of avoiding that pressure and having more control of the game. They are much rarer and so prices are going up. As they of course have gone up for the great keepers. There also appears to be a dearth of really good prospects coming through. Alisson doesn't seem that amazing to me (we put 7 past him in the UCL legs), but highlights suggest he does have really strong hands and can come out well.

50mil net over 6 windows at the moment. Pretty much getting funded 8mil per window by FSG. Very much still selling to buy.

Alisson could put that up to 110mil over 6 windows which is 18mil per window which I reckon is a quite healthy amount but isn't anywhere near blank cheque territory like some are saying.
