Games played last season for best 3 Liverpool CBS:

Virgil Van Dijk 5 out of 38
Joe Gomez 7 out of 38
Joel Matip 10 out of 38

Yes the defence crumbled but without 3 of its best defenders for the majority of the season, not just one. Even under those circumstances the remaining players regrouped and still managed 3rd place.

It's very unlikely this happens to United but this post will be quoted later in the season if Utd lose Maguire, Varane & Lindelof for most of the season and performances drop off.
Crumbled but still out performed the manu defence

Rightly or not I think it also reflects a fair amount of Man Utd supporter opinions as well to be fair…even some on here. He was way too defensive in some of the ‘big 6’ games

Is anyone disagreeing with this though? Most if not all have said this is the make or break season for him, no excuses anymore.

But the fact is he has improved the club/team, has brought in a refreshing man-management system which previous managers didn't do very well. Is he a top manager? No. Can he be? Possibly.

This is the best United team since before SAF retired. And even after the horror shows last season I think United fans should be optimistic going into next season.

He was way too defensive for good reason, as he didn't trust his squads defensive capabilities, hence playing a double pivot of McTominay and Fred in front of McGuire and Lindelof/Bailly. The Varane signing effectively provides quality defensive coverage for the more aggressive McGuire when he moves out to challenge or run the ball. A quality CDM who can manage the role alone would then release a greater forward threat.

In an attacking sense there was really no effective RW last season, with Greenwood and James just not mature/good enough. AWB isn't a great attacking full back so that side of the pitch was blunt for the season. Most attacking thrusts came down the left via Shaw and Rashford.

Depth was/is an issue hence the same 11-15 playing most games. Fatigue and injury set in as the manager didn't trust his back ups as they were mostly kids outside of Matic and Mata. The squad was very limited and OGS has done a very good job to date in addressing its weaknesses. He still has a lot of work to do in trimming dead wood and addressing real depth.

Well we'll have a better idea with some games into the season but until then its pure conjecture. He wouldn't be the first superstar to fail at united.

Nothing in life is guaranteed, heck we might get relegated.

Depth an issue? Compared to other 17- 18 teams? There were games where had more talent than the other team and played like you didn’t.

United has been slowly improving it's depth, frankly we have had many games over the years where our bench is pure trash. We've had a massive investment in youth signings and with more best 11 signings it puts those starting onto the bench which then improves the depth.

Still plenty of dead woods to go.

Depth has been an issue compared to the 'big 6 teams' as you put it, but is so in general. Sure, United's depth is probably still better than most teams but lets not kid ourselves in thinking that it has been quality, because it hasn't been. Especially in central midfield and defence, which is why they play the double pivot, which is why they play on the counter.

As for having more talent than other teams and playing like they didn't, I'm not going to say that the team haven't played poorly at times against average teams, because they clearly have. All quality teams have off days but United looked to be trying to figure out how to break down a parked bus, and failed to do so a bit. They also have played pretty well against the better teams, largely playing on the counter because the squad doesn't have the quality to control those games. What they do have is pace so OGS set them up to take advantage of that.

United are in a position where they have done major work on the squad, its at a place where it looks like a fit squad can challenge for the title, but they still need to gel and break down stacked defences. OGS has done very well to this point with implementing a strategy of revamping the squad and putting it together on the park, but he now has to make it work. Other than a rash of injuries he has very little excuse not to be pushing for honours this year and would want to at least win a cup of some sort.

Ole needs to win this season. I am yet to be convinced by him. Made some terrible team selections last year in games. Looks like he will have more quality at his disposal this season, so needs to get it right more times than wrong.

City have like a 2billion dollar squad and will likely add Kane and Grealish ..

Saf would be hard pressed beating them

Season isn't that far away, doubt those signings are happening.

United look to have had a good window but they’ve got to actually do something on the pitch yet. Some hot takes in here might come back to bite a few if they don’t get the job done this season.

They finished 2nd. How much higher are the expected to go?

The are playing against Peps 2.1 billion quid team

Federico Chiesa's recent accounts followed on Instagram are... interesting.. Can someone confirm, he's on loan at Juventus, they don't own him do they?

2 billion dollar squad a few posts ago, 2.1 billion quid team now, we're just getting better and better.

FWIW to have a £2.1bn squad the average cost of our 25 man squad would be £84m, around £20m higher than our record signing.

Yes, they own him.

AGREEMENT WITH FIORENTINA FOR THE ACQUISITION OF THE PLAYER FEDERICO CHIESA
Juventus Football Club S.p.A. announces that an agreement with ACF Fiorentina for the temporary acquisition, until 30 June 2022, of the registration rights of the player Federico Chiesa has been finalized for a consideration of € 10 million, of which € 3 million for sporting season 2020/2021 and € 7 million for sporting season 2021/2022.
The agreement further entails:

  • The obligation for Juventus to definitely acquire the player’s registrations rights, subject to the achievement of certain given sporting objectives by the end of the season 2021/2022;
  • The right for Juventus to definitively acquire the player’s registration rights in case these given objectives are not achieved.
  • In both cases, the agreed consideration for the definitive acquisition is € 40 million, payable in three years, which might be increased up to a maximum of € 10 milion upon achievement of further performance objectives over the duration of the employment contract with the player.

Serie A have some weird methods around player ownership.

Don't think we've seen any hot takes. All are agreeing with the same thing. Exactly what you've said. Has to perform on the pitch.

Its effectively co-ownership, and is not that much different to a team buying a player and then loaning them back to the original club to keep playing/developing in most cases
