Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

you sure buddy:D take away 6 points and that leaves -1 to our disadvantage doesn't it?

His one goal was a charity handball from Pods. If Vacoe didn't kick the goal Pods would have.

Not to mention that the whole hypothetical arithmetic argument is a ridiculous over-simplification.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

One thing Travis did do tonight was go in much harder at the ball than in previous weeks and I was pleased to see that. Having said that, he clearly didn't have much of an impact and it's noticeable at the ground that he's not covering as much ground with his massive up and back runs as he was doing in the first few weeks of the season. He really needs to do that, and put actual and referred pressure on guys, because that's what he's in the side for. Could be rested next week if Wojo is fit. We all know how damaging he can be over 4 quarters, but at the moment it's a couple of good things, and then be anonymous for the next half hour kind of stuff.

mate seriously, I'd take this guy over any other player we got running around in the two's as of right now. We are unbeaten and if it's not Lonergan, Mackie or Hawkins, it's Varcoe. These type of players like Varcoe are freakish...they may not do much one week but are the match winners in the next. He still demands the respect of a quality backman and that is always over-looked, we are a team full of gut running freaks and need a few more of these type's to really keep backman on their toes. Again we are unbeaten so what more do you want?
Perhaps you could come in and play a game or two in the seniors sometime soon:D

Spot on. If he doesn't play next week, he should not be wasted in the 2's. Some here don't recognise the speedy clever tap-ons and the creativity, our balance with him in the team is just right.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

hey look, I am defending him but am happy to have him dropped only if the coach does so not the supporters. I just believe some players benefit from being dropped more so than others and Varcoe I'm not so sure about. Can't expect every player to have decent numbers though. You'd wanna expect that type of stuff in September/October

(perhaps his best mate Djerkurra is a bigger loss than we all imagined)

I'm not being critical. I'm just stating facts. I think he's a potential superstar. I've never called for him to be dropped. That's not my job.

But tonight he had six possessions and was close to worst on ground. If Wojcinski is fit then Varcoe is the obvious candidate to make way.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

The guy was quiet but the really impressed with one act that I never expected him to do in an AFL match. In the third qtr he sprinted full tilt with the flight of the ball to take a mark while Buddy and Lonners were heading straight for the contest. Every bit as courageous as the Selwood one against the Dees a few years back. Not sure if the commentators picked it up but it was really gutsy stuff.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

To me it doesn't seem to be effort or courage. It's his not capable of the workrate this season. It's not even close to what it was last year.

He's still doing the odd good thing and a lot of it is the 1% stuff that doesn't get the kudos. But he's not covering nearly the amount of ground he was last year and that has surely a lot to do with his preseason. Last year he had a full preseason then broke a finger which extended it another 5 or 6 weeks. This summer was very different.

Wouldn't mind Scott pulling the pin and sending him on our own Arizona trip. It's worth losing him for the next four to five weeks if it means we have him back to his very best in September/October.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

Very close to being dropped. Sub one game, subbed off last night for a 34 yo who had much more impact on the game. Coach is losing patience with him. But we probably need some speed against St Kilda so might be saved.

He was a lot harder at the contest last night, which is pleasing to see but doesn't calm his critics who say he picks and chooses when to go.

Regardless of the drop/keep debate, he has had a terrible year for someone who was expected to kick on, has gone backwards.

Your last statement is naive. In Feb this year, I was already trying to forewarn people here that TV was not going to advance on his achievements of last year. He has had serious shoulder reconstructive surgery and as much as he would like to talk it up and say he'll be perfect, reality is it takes a whole season to get back to where he was last year. He is a beautiful work in progress, and we have to be patient. Took Buddy a season to become the absolute gun he is.

The preseason that he missed is critical for his upper body and core strength, let alone his fitness, and he is NOW likely busting his arse trying to make up for lost time while the rest of our list is consolidating, preserving, managing . Any wonder he looks flat. I had the chance to ask the club Doc when we played NM how he was, and he said "fine, just stuffed". He is working, and I'd rather have him in the 1's getting his mojo back, specially while as a team we have the capacity to carry him a little.

We win 11 in a row, and people incessantly want TV out of the team because he's not up to speed with the rest, or below where he was last year, well there are reasons and again, let there be patience. When Scott says he's out, we can accept that it's time, and that maybe is this week against Saints. I hope not as you just never know with Trav when he's about to change the game, but if he's out, I hope he gets a rest, and not the chance of a meaningless injury in the 2's.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

Let's be realists boys, he couldn't carry cyrils' bags to the ground, but maybe Bundy could, so why not give the young fella a go???????????

Think we've seen enough.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

I don't want to beat up on Trav, but he looks like he is trying to avoid body contact to me. I cannot help wondering if he is carrying some sort of injury. Whatever the case. I think that he could do with a spell and maybe someone like Bundy come into the side.

Makes sense and might explain his drop in fitness from the start of the year.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

He can't be carrying an injury.
We have rested a stack of players through injury this year. He isn't immune to a rest.
It's not like we'd miss him right now.

We need him to kick 4 in a final this year. And on the current path it aint going to happen.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

lol. I didn't start this one.

But this subject has gone way too long. He has had the chances now (6 weeks after I first mentioned it)

In my original thread I said I always look for him. Still do. He hardly even entered the screen last night.

He has to go, has to. Hawkins wasn't as out of form as he is.

I promise. I want him to be our best player. But he is in a lot of trouble.
I actually can't remember a player at Geelong being so out of form over the past 5 years as what he is.

I haven't a man love for him as some have, but if we judge impartially as I try to, he shouldn't be carried any longer, time to give another an opportunity.
6 possessions and a thank you Pods 'joe the goose' goal says it all, not enough.
Then subbed, thankfully releasing Milburn
Couldn't see him impacting against the Saints, even if there was a next week, their backline's pretty tough and hard.

What's that mean 4or5 weeks in the You Yangs.;)

Cruel to be kind, he needs the 2's and we need all hands on deck, it's that simple, that goes for all of em.
A Premiership in 2011 would be an amazing feat, no room for sentimentality, play on merit.

Don't think there is any point sending him to the two's.

For me it's about finding the best way for him to get his fitness back. It's hard to build your fitness when you're playing every week and taking a battering. Perhaps Scott has found a compromise in subbing him.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

Just checked the 2's report, first name to appear for best players, Christiansen.
That's two weeks running. Varks, 6 touches!
Surely something has to give, that kid deserves a game.

Or even Shannon Byrnes once he gets going. I have not always loved him but my gosh he has an honest crack and can find the footy.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

I haven't bought into this 'discussion' so far, and 17 pages shows that my input won't count for much.

I believe that Travis has the potential to be an absolute star, but something is obviously seriously amiss. The fact that he was basically deemed to be the expendable member of the team when we activated the sub last week obviously indicates that the coaching staff had no faith in him to contribute when push came to shove.

I hope, for his own sake as much as for the team's, that whatever is holding him from achieving his full potential can be sorted out so that we can all revel in his gloriously silken skills.

I suspect that he may find himself taking a break from the bigs in the very near future, and hopefully it won't be too extended a break till he can return & perform.

He, like Tom hawkins, is still a young man, and that potential can still be tapped.

Here's hoping.
