Triple J's Hottest 100 of Australian Songs

I think Ruel's had his run, he couldnt even chart in a collab with The DMA's this past year.

I'd expect one Amity and maybe one Parkway track in, but my pick for committed fanbases pushing an artist in is G-Flip this time.
How high can Spacey fans push Booster Seat is the one that intrigues me the most.

Probably worth remembering again that these lists are not objective quality but popularity from a very small sample of the population.

Judging the list based on the objective quality is a pointless exercise.

Went to cast votes for this thinking ‘is there even any point’ based on the fact that even as a 41 year old Britpop devotee with a hard-on doe British classic rock my true love is pub music and like a lot of people my age, Australian 90s alternative music. Would be next to impossible to pick 10 songs.

Then realised voting had closed a day or two earlier anyway.

Probably just a sign of my age more than anything but I don’t feel like there has been a lot of ‘classic’ songs or ‘great’ songs that have come out since 2000. Gotye STIUTK is a work of art and even as a non fan of anything especially rappy The Nosebleed Section was a favourite, I liked Wokdmother for about 6 months but it has been a sparse period for me.

Theophilis Thistler or Frontier Psychiatrist might be my favourite song in that timeframe, I dunno.

But I think if I do sit there listening I’ll be going ‘when is the next Living End/Silverchair/Jebediah/You Am I/Powderfinger/Bodyjar (that might be stretching it) song going to be announced’ and hoping that other bands I like from earlier that people probably hate now like Mental as Anything or Australian Crawl are deemed ‘cool’ enough to get a gong.

Jet's Are You Gonna Be My Girl? Presets My People or Talk Like That? Tame Impala?

Gang of Youths are the best thing to come out of Australia this century, imo.

Didn’t really take to Jet to be honest. I kind of liked that they tried, and I didn’t hate them or that song, but yeah they didn’t do that much for me. My favourite Jet moment was Nic Cester’s performance as one of the leaders of The Wrights singing Evie at Wave Aid.

I actually do like Gang of Youths, not big on Tame Impala.

If covers count, the most beautiful thing anyone has released this century is DMAs singing Believe

I only voted for 2 post 2000 songs in my Top 10, The Panics - Kid You're A Dreamer and Empire of the Sun - Walking on a Dream.

I was close to voting for these 2 post 2000 songs too though.

There were a lot more songs from the 80s and 90s that I wanted to vote for but had to leave out than post 2000 songs though.

Actually, if you're looking for something 'pub rock' with a 90s alternative sound, check out the Vanns. Great, underrated Aussie band.

Loved The Sleepy Jackson. As I said earlier, my votes were half driven by favourites and half driven by what might poll. Actually choosing 10 objectively favourite songs is impossible.

There were more obscure songs that I could have voted for but I thought there wasn't much point if no one else voted for them.

What does everyone think the top 20 is going to look like?

I’m thinking something like this:

1. Nosebleed Section - Hilltop Hoods

2. My Happiness – Powderfinger

3. Untouched - Veronicas

4. Somebody That I Used To Know – Gotye / Kimbra

5. The Less I know the better - Tame Impala

6. Innerbloom - Rufus Du Sol

7. Down Under - Men At Work

8. Khe Sanh – Cold Chisel

9. How to make gravy – Paul Kelly

10. Horses – Daryl Braithwaite

11. Never Tear Us Apart – INXS

12. Riptide - Vance Joy

13. These days - Powderfinger

14. Sweet Disposition - The Temper Trap

15. You’re The Voice – John Farnham

16. Scar - Missy Higgins

17. Don’t Dream It’s Over – Crowded House

18. Magnolia - Gang of Youths

19. Thunderstruck – AC/DC

20. Never Be Like You - Flume

21. Covered in Crome - Violent Soho

22. Tomorrow - Silverchair

23. Booster Seat - Spacey Jane

24. Straight Lines - Silverchair

25. To her door - Paul Kelly

Plus no.

50. Can’t Get You Out Of My Head – Kylie Minogue

69. Better in Blak - Thelma Plum

75. Solid Rock – Goanna

100. Losing it - FISHER

101. Adore u - Amy Shark

It's a good song, but the idea it's one of the top 20 songs in Australian history is insane. Should be 80-100.

Whole count isn't necessarily reflective. They weren't making my top 10 but things like Boom Crash Opera with no listings opposed to other indy stuff (which I don't doubt is good) with 3 just kills it.

I personally think Kylie will be higher than 50, I'd say 30-15 range and feel that Horses will be lower, have barely seen a vote for it and it seems to have reached that stage where it annoys as many people as it resonates with

Probably very wrong, might as well launch up a prediction though.

1. Innerbloom - RUFUS DU SOL
2. Somebody That I Used To Know - Gotye & Kimbra
3. Untouched - The Veronicas
4. Sweet Disposition - The Temper Trap
5. The Nosebleed Section - Hilltop Hoods
6. The Less I Know The Better - Tame Impala
7. My Happiness - Powderfinger
8. Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again - The Angels
9. Never Tear Us Apart - INXS
10. Khe Sanh - Cold Chisel
11. Thunderstruck - AC/DC
12. Booster Seat - Spacey Jane
13. Scar - Missy Higgins
14. Beds Are Burning - Midnight Oil
15. Straight Lines - Silverchair

Think that Powderfinger, INXS, Cold Chisel and AC/DC suffer from vote splitting pretty badly.

The Kylie prediction probably worse case could see it 35-45, was thinking a few years ago Padam Padam was predicted to go top 20 & finished up in the 40’s. Don’t think she’ll b a lot of voters 9/10 vote where as other artists will be. Hopefully your right & horses does not go top10 would much prefer INXS or these days

If Fisher's Losing It makes anywhere near the 100...

I’m prepared for it to be in the 80-100 range, but would prefer it to not chart at all haha, it is such a run of the mill track

I’m not gonna rage over songs that recently finished high, but yeah if Horses is still unsighted come the top 15 I’m turning it off right there and walking away. Wouldn’t cope with that going so high on JJJ in 2025. The sooner it pops up the better. The likes of Howzat and One Summer would be worthy, and they were actual hits overseas.

I'm worried it will be in the top 10.

I used to like the song but overexposure has killed it for me.

I wouldn't be turning off then. If Horses isn't there before the Top 15 it's likely missed the list entirely. People might like it as a joke but it's not going to be in many people's Top 10 favourite Australian tracks of all time.
While i haven't been looking that closely this time around I've seen 60 or 70 peoples votes and not one has included Horses.

Horses is an interesting one. Actually haven't seen it in a lot of people's votes, but also wouldn't surprise me at all if it is top 15.

My honest opinion, it arrives between 35-70. Which I know is a large range, but I really haven't seen enough votes for it to be much higher unless I'm just missing all of them.
