Can't believe they won't let me just give all 10 votes to Prisoner of Society.

Outrageous.

I can't believe Roll On isn't one of The Living End's three, but there you go. I had to enter it manually, unfortunately that means it's got no chance of polling.

I'm sure I'm not the only old man yelling at clouds unhappy with the voting options, but here goes:

It's a bit annoying (for me) that I can't easily vote for a band like Screamfeeder, who have been out busting a gut for three decades, but I can vote for Strawberry Kisses by Nicki Webster or What About Me by Shannon Noll.

Here endeth the rant.
I wouldn't even vote for the original.

One of the most godawful songs ever written IMHO, no idea why it keeps 'coming back' every decade or so.

Don't really think you can predict something like this with a straight face tbh. Too hard.

Sportsbet have Powderfinger as their favourite, so you probably aren't too far off. Rufus, Tame Impala, The Veronicas, AC/DC, Gotye, Flume, INXS, Jimmy Barnes and Hilltop Hoods round out the top 10 in the betting.
Anyone know what has happened here?

Usually have a bet each year, not sure why they would allow Eurovision but not this

So why can't I vote for Split Enz?

At least Crowded House songs are eligible as half their original band are Aussies.

There was only 3 original members of Crowded House and the main man is a Kiwi.

"And the sound of Te Awamutu had a truly sacred ring", Te Awamutu is in NZ not OZ.

TRUE all artists only sing about the place they're from.

I've got my shortlist down to these 15 and have hit an absolute wall in culling any more. Might have to blindly throw darts at a board.

2. Redgum - I Was Only 19 - 1983
3. AC/DC - Thunderstruck - 1990
4. The Living End - Prisoner of Society - 1999
5. Powderfinger - My Happiness - 2000
6. The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist - 2000
7. Something For Kate - Monsters - 2001
8. The Vines - Get Free - 2002
9. Hilltop Hoods - The Nosebleed Section - 2003
10. Missy Higgins - Scar - 2004
11. Ball Park Music - It's Nice to be Alice - 2011
12. Violent Soho - Covered in Chrome - 2013
13. Gang of Youths - Magnolia - 2015
14. Middle Kids - Edge of Town - 2016
15. Ruby Fields - Dinosaurs - 2018

this probably won’t help at all but if it was me I’d cut Redgum, Hilltop, Missy, Middle Kids and Ruby but Christ that is a tough one

Thanks. I think I'll cut Hilltop but not sure on the rest.

I think Missy and Redgum are firmly ensconced in the votes. Missy in particular deserves it as she's absolute Aus music royalty and there's a general lack of female representation otherwise.

I could probably cut Middle Kids despite Edge of Town being amazing. I honestly think Dinosaurs is a modern classic, so not sure I have it in me to cut that.

Ugh, this is hard.

Not having any Johnny O'Keefe songs shortlisted is interesting. He was the first Australian rock & roll performer to tour the USA and the first Australian artist to make the local Top 40 charts. He co-wrote Wild One, which was then later covered by Iggy Pop as Real Wild Child (Wild One). O'Keefe released over 50 singles, 50 EPs and 100 albums. And he was dead by 43.

Overlooking Axiom's "A Little Ray of Sunshine" for the shortlist is also a choice.

Only having one shortlisted song from Australian Crawl is interesting. They shortlisted "Reckless", whereas I think "Beautiful People" and "The Boys Light Up" would be the better-known songs. I actually like "Downhearted" the most from their singles, which is what I added.

Current shortlist:

  • Thunderstruck - AC/DC
  • Wild One - Johnny O'Keefe
  • Blue Sky Mine - Midnight Oil
  • Greg! The Stop Sign!! - TISM
  • The Unguarded Moment - The Church
  • Downhearted - Australian Crawl
  • The Honeymoon is Over - The Cruel Sea
  • Straight Lines - silverchair
  • Eagle Rock - Daddy Cool
  • Khe Sanh - Cold Chisel
  • Little Ray of Sunshine - Axiom
  • We Can't Be Beaten - Rose Tattoo
  • Prisoner of Society - The Living End
  • Take a Long Line - The Angels
  • Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face - The Angels
  • Gold Chains - Genesis Owusu
  • The Nosebleed Section - Hilltop Hoods
  • Cosby Sweater - Hilltop Hoods
  • Holy Grail - Hunters & Collectors
  • Throw Your Arms Around Me - Hunters & Collectors
  • Fruit Salad - The Wiggles
  • Treaty - Yothu Yindi
  • You're the Voice - John Farnham
  • Where the Wild Roses Grow - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds & Kylie Minogue
  • Can't Get You out of My Head - Kylie Minogue
  • Up There Cazaly - Mike Brady
  • That's the Thing About Football - Greg Champion
  • Cricket's On the Radio - Greg Champion
  • Dumb Things - Paul Kelly (not shortlisted, surprisingly)

One Aussie Crawl song is probably the weirdest thing for mine. I get they've capped it at 3 songs per artist, and some artists have been completely missed sure, but they didn't miss Aussie Crawl - they just decided to only pick 1 of their songs and ignore some very iconic ones in the process?

Very good chance I would've voted for Boys Light Up as well, but dunno if it's worthwhile given it's not on the list.

yeah the omission of Boys Light Up from the shortlist is baffling, I know Reckless is arguably their biggest hit but everyone knows Boys Light Up too.

Noiseworks being completely absent from the shortlist is pretty stupid too when you look at some of the newer crap they've put on there :tearsofjoy:

The rules are that only songs released post 1975 - i.e. the 50th anniversary of 2JJ - are eligible. Otherwise, The Easybeats, The Seekers and Master's Apprentices would also be glaring omissions.

anyone reckon some local yearly #1s will miss the cut?

Hoops looks the most vulnerable, only #46 in the 2010s decade countdown a few years back

then you have Wish You Well (Fanning) & Say Nothing (Flume) having to compete with other #1s more likely from those artists, although recency will help the latter. I think the rest for various reasons will scrape enough votes to have a shot. Buy Me a Pony might be vulnerable, as it didn’t make the 2009 all-time and there are more subsequent Spiderbait singles to compete with now compared to 1996 (depends how many or few got shortlisted). A lot of the others are still relatively defining tunes for those artists in the main.

that’s all without a glance at how they all fare on modern streaming
