Kings of leon new album is rubbish. sounds even worse when you listen to their debut then listen to their newie. they wanted commercial success. so I hope they don't get #1 but I'm sure there'll be some other rubbish such as panic at the disco.

Also I swear I heard beyonce on triple J last night. did anyone else?

Girl Talk..... maybe?

Triple J are by a very large margin the best radio station in Australia. When you hear a song you don't like just treat it like an ad from a commercial radio station. I know what I would rather hear. :thumbsu:

100% with you there, Youth and young manhood is their best album by a fair distance and is a killer.

Hate all the people who don't like a band now their popular. Loved The Kings back in the Y&YM and ASH days but I personally think there are just as good in 2008 as they were in '03 and people who whether or not they accept it or not, just don't like them anymore because everybody else does. You don't go from loving them, to calling them rubbish when they haven't changed that much.

oh dont get me wrong i love kings of leon, I even have paid for all of their albums (which if you know me is saying something) its just i like the raw style they had back in the days of Y&YM better then the style they went with on OBTN. Having said that be somebody, cold desert and closer are still 3 of their best songs.

Nope, I just don't like them because I genuinely don't like them. They have changed enormously. ASH is the best album of the last 5 or 6 years for mine, Y&YM probably in the top 5. The difference between ASH and BOTT is incredible, it's like they discovered the reverb pedal and went nuts. Compare songs like Trani and Joe's Head to songs like McFearless and Use Somebody and tell me there hasn't been much change.

Or perhaps they enjoyed the raw energy and stripped down, southern garage rock sound of their early work as opposed to the overproduced, largely uninteresting, made-for-mainstream pap they are producing these days?

Could that also be an option, perhaps?

If you are looking at it on raw energy then your always going to be disapointed by later releases. The difference between the two British India albums in terms of raw energy is massive. Also people seem to call them 'mainstream, overproduced' if they get plenty of air time. They don't play their songs 100x a day, they don't choose which songs everybody is going to love. I am certain if this album hadn't been popular people on here would probally like it alot more. There is some fantastic songs on OBTN and it certainly isn't a 'rubbish' album.

Well, it's great you enjoy the album, however, personally, a lot of what I found appealing about the band initially has largely dissolved over the course of their last few albums. BOTT was very hit and miss and very little appealed to me on OBTN.

And this has nothing to do with the relative popularity of their respective albums. I wouldn't even know whether it was popular or not....

Triple J used to be the bastion of independent Australian music, these days it seems to push fairly mainstream and unadventurous stuff.

Somewhere along the way Triple J has lost it's way and become fairly homogenised and ignoring the great music that is out there.

You mean other then the Triple J Unearthed website and campaign being the best outlet for unsigned bands by a radio station ever?

Sure Unearthed is a worthy initiative but it has lost its gloss compared to what it used to be too.

I remember when the whole unearthed concept started and Grinspoon were unearthed - there was a genuine excitement/buzz about and that continued for a while.

Sadly the current unearthed comp seems to be more about band pimping themselves on myspace/facebook etc to get people to vote for them and unearthed is now just another part of the Australian music business.

I think it needs a radical overhaul - at present unearthed is all about demo tapes - we need something that gets musical acts out playing live in front of punters. That's where they hone their skills and develop into great acts - not in a recording studio.

you mean something along the lines of "BATTLE OF THE BANDS"

Vampire Weekend will have at least 5 songs in the top 100. I hated them at the start and only listen to their album begrudgingly at first but the more I listen the more I like. It only has one dud song on it. It will be the sound track to a lot of people's summer.

Would like to see MGMT take it out but will probably be the Presets. As long as that festival shit goes nowhere near the top 10 :thumbsd:

A song I would love to see win is Skeleton Dance by Children Collide, great track.

Silhouetics by Birds of Tokyo is another one I think will get top 10.

What do people think about:

No Sex for Ben - The Rapture
Lucid Dreams - Franz Ferdinand

If I had to put money on a song it would be on Jimmy Recard to finish top 5.

Interesting stats I got off jplay.com.au for 2008, top ten most played songs on Triple J:

# Song / Artist Airings
1 This Boy's In Love (The Presets) 190
2 Jimmy Recard (Drapht) 186
3 Det Snurrar I Min Skalle (Familjen) 181
4 No Sex For Ben (The Rapture) 172
5 Electric Feel (MGMT) 168
6 Kids (MGMT) 162
7 Neighbours (Trial Kennedy) 160
8 Silhouettic (Birds Of Tokyo) 158
9 Talk Like That (The Presets) 158
10 I Like It, I Love It (Lyrics Born) 154

Not sure if they're all from 2008, and I guess you've got to take into account the songs that commonly get played on commercial radio stations (KOL, MGMT etc.)

This is a great song, I'm tipping it to go at least top 10 maybe higher

I just went to that site and was about to copy the top 10 over, but i see you beat me to it.

the only thing with that is that some of the most played songs on jjj get picked up by commercial radio and get played to death, so a lot of people will refuse to vote for it because they are so sick of the song.

im actually really hoping that art vs science crack the top 20. i like their song "flippers", but im friends with them too, so it would be great for them!

personally, i think number 1 will be sex on fire, regardless of the flogging it is getting everywhere. too many people like it (myself not included) for it not to get the top slot.
