Is umpire corruption an issue worth investigating?

Just to clarify, I accept shit umpiring but absolutely loathe biased/cheating ones.

Shit umpiring = both teams get bad calls in similar amounts.

Biased/cheating umpiring = the bad calls are heavily skewed in favor of one team over the other. 17-1 isn’t just the issue with that Pannell game, but how many frees that were not called for us? Say Pannell had not called about 3-5 for us, this roughly translates to 95% favouritism to one team.

In most average games, even though there will likely be an imbalance, the free kick count might be skewed, but very very rarely more than 70%.
This was the issue. In the exact same game, 2 other umpires found the free kicks to be exactly 50/50. Don't know if they paid 6-6 and 5-5 or 6-5 and 5-6 or whatever, but their combined opinion was both teams infringed equally.

So how did we only switch to playing a game style where we commit 17x the amount of infringements when one umpire was looking?

He was also umpiring in the Adelaide vs Sydney game late in the 2017 season when he punished Betts for a 50 after we had all the momentum after a huge comeback. Betts should have gotten a free after a great tackle and gave away 50 Betts got mad (and rightly so) for the free against. It cost us the game. We did have top spot sealed on the ladder regardless of the result. Adelaide has not beaten Sydney at home ever since and twice they should have because of rubbish decisions.

It was also the same game that Franklin could have possibly been pinged for running too far.

Non officiating umpire paid the mark and 50. Always a sign that something isn't right.

My memory--possibly faulty--is that the free he paid to us was in the 4th quarter with the game decided. It was to Rory Sloane in the goal square, and he kicked a goal.
Game wasn't decided. That goal put Adelaide 19 points down. They closed to within 3 before Dogs kicked a couple of goals (and no, he didn't make an error after they got that close).

Commentator at the 24 minute mark of Q3 said one of the umpires had paid 1 FK. Random patterns happen.

Thing is I knew we would get reamed before the match. I think the Bulldogs were also favoured in previous matches before ours but obviously not as much. The media pushed a "sexy dogs" when they barely scored 100 points and "brave dogs" narrative early in 2016.

Exactly like what happened in the 2017 Grand final - free kick richmond as the narrative had already been set for a Richmond fairytale in the vic media - forget we lost Walsh the year before and it should have been the narrative. Remember also Cotchin getting off at the tribunal for his snipe of Shiel in the prelim, Edwards got off his too. Pretty sure they appointed 3 Victorian umpires on the day as well. Leigh Matthews said you can't beat city hall and he is right

Part of me wonders if the AFL knew about his gambling / debts back when he was umpiring and tapped him on the shoulder, leading to his “retirement” back in 2018, so that the AFL could distance themselves from any potential backlash if his story was to ever unfold?

I know it’s a stretch, but surely the AFL have some sort of screening process into the lives of their umpires, and people talk…

I’m surprised this is not also being discussed on main board (with the skipping out on court) there is an old umpiring thread which got bumped but not a lot of activity

Swap Adelaide for Collingwood and imagine the response.

At the time I thought he was bias.

But now I am certain that game was 100% fixed.

I also think given the Bulldogs GWS and Sydney finals, they were also possibly fixed.

The AFL has brought it on themselves. There is very little accountability for being ‘wrong’, if coaches comment on them they get fined. The AFL refuses to even consider there could be corruption while they’re in bed with the betting agencies.

Oh and then an AFL umpire literally arrested for Brownlow betting manipulation (but hey, they’d never affect a game).

I don’t think it’s the first game that’s been fixed. So many questionable frees or lopsided free kick counts when it matters. We’re naive to think it’s just bad umpiring. But the AFL are more interested in looking good than actually investigating because doubt they’d have a broom big enough to sweep it under the rug.

They couldn't even comprehend the concept properly. Because these things don't happen in the first place, when you're Collingwood.

I'm looking forward to hearing that an Adelaide supporter spotted him & informed police for his arrest.

We then parade him at half time at Adelaide Oval in cuffs so we can give him a final send off.

I think the afl know this type of crap is going on and dont want to acknowledge it as they know it will open pandoras box .It just so obvious with the amount of games being affected by dodgy umpiring this year

What’s needed is some true investigative journalism to expose the issue we all know exists but sadly that doesn’t really exist anymore

I think Pyke was on board to the extent that he wanted the group to go through some sports psychology to toughen them up, but I dont think he had anything to do with the selection process. Burton had previously put CM forward at Brisbane (and was rejected) and put them up to Adelaide. I was told the due diligence done on CM by AFC was "inadequate". Pyke wasnt really part of that process, it was signed off by the Board.
I was told Pyke didn’t even know about it. The Commandos rocked up at stupid o’clock at the team hotel on the Gold Coast and everybody was told to get up, get dressed and pack and be in the lobby in ten minutes (picture lots of banging on doors and shouting). They all trundle down but only a dozen or so were told to get on the bus - Pyke was one of them. The others were sent back for breakfast and then went to a training session (which I went to watch). According to my source, Pyke had no idea where they were going or what they were doing. Something to do with him not knowing so as to have the same experience as the players.

Yes that's pretty much what I have bene told too. He knew the basic concept but had no idea of the content. It was Burton that drove it, as GM Footy Ops.

I'll wait for the "Pannell in a barrel" headline.

Collective cult?

In a nutshell, if something can be cheated, there will be cheaters cheatin’.

Panell was that cheater who cheated but didn’t do a good job of disguising himself.

For years Stevic was the AFLs go to man, getting the results the AFL wanted. I remember for years it was free kick Hawthorn, Bulldogs and Richmond, it's nothing new, been going on for years and still is to this day.
