I'll take the musical journey with you on this:
A musician learns the fundamentals (usually from an early age whether self-taught or instructed, you can't move past a certain level without it & you are learning it even if you don't realise it.) so you are building the tools and knowledge.
IMO a musician turns into an artist when he/she can capture inspiration in it's purest element be it simple or complex it's irrelevant, whether you wanna call that a connection on a higher realm is up to you but the tools to get there have been instilled.
I mean sure I get the emotional side of it and pulling it together into something truly special but I believe it's more a culmination of your abilities maturing than locking into the universal mind.
Yep advanced technical ability + high emotional intelligence = great art that can evoke an emotional response in others. Conflating that with the supernatural is erroneous but it feels good.
