This kid just needs to play. God it's frustrating!!!

What happens if he gets injured again?? Seriously, it could happen...

What more could we do? Pay out another salary, i say we'd have trade him..

Has their been a bigger barometer for the team and morale of the Melbourne supporters than this man? So so important yet so so absent. Our young defenders (as good as they have been) would absolutely thrive with this guy in the midst of it all.

Here's hoping for an injury free 2009.:thumbsu:

Is Rivers only 192cm??!! That is really surprising.
Isn't Dunny that height?
It's amazing how players can 'look' or 'play' tall....Rivers is one of them.
Gee we need him back in 09.

for the record im a huge fan of Jared Rivers shows a lot of potential but he has been at the club for 4 years now and has only had 1 injury free season..do you think 2009 should be his last chance to get his body right and if he injures himself again try and trade him? for the sake of the MFC i really hope the kid can string together a full pre season and than play most games next season the man is an out and out gun :)

Re: Jared Rivers

Yeah tend to agree.

If he did another season ending injury next year, id say we would be forced to trade him. I'm sure he would understand to, it's not like we haven't given him time. Hopefully he can come into some stellar form next year.

Re: Jared Rivers

This probably could have gone in 'the change rooms' but either way it is something worthy of discussion. The thought of Rivers having another injury plagued season (I think for all of us) would be unbarable but it is a possibility given his history. However, unless he copped an injury that was going to keep him out for a fair while or there was a recurrence of a previous injury (groin/other) that may hamper the rest of his career throughout then we'd obviously keep him. Despite having an up and coming defence, Rivers is a rare comodity that any team would love to have. He turns 24 next month so is still part of Bailey's future plans I would imagine. I just hope he can get some (many) games under his belt next year because if 2009 is injury plagued then the club would at least have to weigh things up.

Re: Jared Rivers

I love the bloke but if he has another shocker with injury we might have to look at trading him.

The only thing is, we'd want a really good pick for him and I doubt other clubs would be willing to give us something so valuable for an injury-plagued 25y.o.

All we can hope for is he gets back to full fitness and further strengthens our exciting backline.

People have to realise that when Rivers gets injured all the other teams know about it as well. Some people seem to think we can off-load injury prone players at their value if they weren't injured and other teams won't notice. If Rivers gets another season ending injury next year and we try to trade him i doubt we'd be offered a pick inside the top 30.

You have to be realistic about a players value, and a player who (if he gets another injury next year) is 25 and only ever played over 15 games in a season twice from 7 seasons won't be holding a lot of currency. If we traded Rivers in that situation it would only be because we believed he was costing us too much for too little return, it wouldn't really matter what we got for him and i wouldn't expect it to be too much.

On a more positive note, i see no reason why Rivers shouldn't get through next year unscathed. The injury he suffered this year was unrelated to his OP which has held him back in previous years, so if he can fully recover from the abdominal injury he should not be carrying any injuries into the season. If he does get another injury then he is one unlucky bastard

^^ I agree, his value will be minimal if he receives another season-ending injury in 2009.

There would not be much to gained out of off-loaded him in my view, and as you said this last injury was unrelated, so he should be able to put some games together. In saying that, even though the last injury was unrelated, it happened, so with Jared being as injury prone as he is, another unrelated injury is quite possible.

If we get him out on the field, it will be a huge boost for our club. I'm just wondering, with the impressive development in defence, is there a chance he could go forward?

ahh i doubt it...i'd rather see Garland go up forward he played his whole juniour career as a forward and has been tranformed into a backmen...a good one at that

It's something worth trying in my opinion, remember Garland probably would have been delisted had he not gone into the backline. He played a few games as a forward if I remember correctly and he struggled and looked lost.

Throwing Rivers up forward as a trial thing won't hurt our defence, so I'd be all for it. He's gone forward a couple of times in the past and has kicked a few goals from about 40-50 meters out.

Jared Rivers

I was just wondering what his contract status is and does anyone think the club would look at trading him?

If so what would you expect the club to ask for in return?
