Roast Umpiring: Corruption or Incompetence, or both

I swear I saw Hawthorn get a 70m penalty yesterday. From half back all the way until 30m out from goal.

Pretty sure you're right. It went on and on and on.

The fifty paid to Clurey was another blot on umpires. Although this is something that just shows stupidity, not corruption.
The dimensions of UTAS stadium are 175 x 145. Clurey was paid a fifty when he was at least 20 metres outside the 50, my schoolboy maths says that should have taken him to at least 120m from our goal (for the umpires that is 50+20+50) and he should have been having a kick from 55m. Instead he kicked from 70. This may not have affected anything, in both cases it would have been a kick into the fifty and not a shot at goal but getting the ball to land close to goal can cause a bit more chaos in the backlines than a kick to 20-30 out.
But like I said this is more about stupidity than anything else. Hawthorn got a short fifty as well and there is that famous example of Shannon Grant marking inside the fifty and getting taken to the top of the goalsquare.

As well as the Clurey short fifty, there was one where a Hawks free was overturned, they were aware of it and kicked the ball away. No fifty was awarded and Ryder would have been 35 out.
Was that the one that was awarded just inside the centre square, and they put the mark about 5 metres in from the centre square edge in our attacking half? That was just stupidity. The centre square is 50m. If they pay attention to where they are on the field there are plenty of references to get it vaguely right.

As mentioned on another thread the AFL really isn’t a professional/professionally run nationwide sports league but merely a manufactured sports entertainment business like WWE with a select group of pigs at the trough.
Amateur umps..
The guys at head office balls deep in the younger chicks..
The Dogs, Richmond and now Melbourne..
The FIXture, club’s inequity with TV coverage..
Abusers like Carey with roles in the media..
Franklin’s rumoured continued drug use and league sanctioned protection..
GF’s at the MCG for the next 772 years..
Rumours of Gil resigning shortly over corruption..
Could go on.... but almost couldn’t give a shit any more.

Cant agree on the GF part. GF should always be at the MCG, Its tradition. Not to mention its the only ground in the country big enough to actually hold it.

Nah stuff the Vics. Their big clubs were buying premierships with money they didn't have and fell into big debts. Expanded their competition to save themselves and arrogantly never believed that a non-Vic team would win a flag. They stuffed up all premier leagues throughout the land. Killed off the football histories of good old clubs in other states and almost ours by stranding us on an island to accept the crows. Gave us the worse concessions and the list goes on. They've been the biggest dismantlers of tradition but I still hate them less than the sanfl though. It would be right to have the afl gf played outside Victoria but capacity is a thorn.

Yes. I think umpires see certain people and make their decisions from that. If it had been Polec or Wingard who got the fifty at exactly the same place they would have been taken to the fifty but a deep-lying defender such as Clurey they look at and think "he can't be close to the centre" and take him to a spot outside the forward 50.

Crows got looked after so next game at Adelaide Oval, the home side (Port Adelaide) will get bent over.

Hawthorn got looked after so their next opponent (crows) will get looked after.

Remember when the Crows were shafted by that Pannell bloke against the Bulldogs and they made a HUGE stink about it?

Did he ever umpire one of their games again?

What is the betting that the response of the AFL will be to point out the games where the teams on the wrong side of the count won? Ignoring the fact that North were always going to beat Lions and Melbourne were always going to beat the Bulldogs. Also that the frees in the first half allowed Adelaide to be close enough to steal the lead at one point. It would be interesting to see the free count at 4.32 in the last quarter at Optus which is when St Kilda started their run of 6.1 to 0.2.

The one that got me yesterday, was the very very very late call on the Port Player chopping the arms in the centre of the ground

The call was so late that all the Power Players had moved forward assuming play on had been allowed

Suddenly the Hawks have the ball, and we're all out of position, they waltz it down for a goal

The umps should have admitted that it was a late call and held the ball until Port had the opportunity to get back into a position where they would have been if the ump hadn't stuffed up in the first place

We have received nowhere near the advantage at home that teams such as WCE have. The AFL can bleat all they like about home crowds affecting umpires but if they do it there so consistently why do they not do it here? And I can bet West Coast never had to put up with a game such as the St Kilda one last year where it was not just 19-28 but St Kilda kicked 5 blatant deliberates including 3 in the last quarter. When we were 10 points down and people were leaving the commentators said that was in disgust and intimated it was as much at the umpiring as their team.
What have we had? Well back to R1 in 2017 we have played 17 games at AO for 342-326 frees. Our best was one 10+ which was this years Showdown, although the most important free was one missed where Tex Walker held Jonas back and Josh Jenkins flew in from the side nowhere near the ball to illegally clear a path for Mitch McGovern. We also had an 8+ game but the others were only 1-6 in our favour.
The worst one I have already mentioned; we even lost the count 22-28 in the North Melbourne game where we demolished them by 70 last year.
Overall in the last 17 games at AO(including last years away showdown and the EF) we have won the count ten times, lost it 6 times and drawn it once for 342-326.

The sport is so poorly officiated but I'll continue to watch the team I have loved since I was a toddler but my heart pull is fading and I'm beginning to resent watching.

I would have absolutely no interest in AFL if the EPL was anywhere near the same time slot and within touching distance.

It definitely makes one want to find another code to follow.
Well done AFL.

I'm surprised that the OP is even a question anymore.
It's clearly a corrupt system.
8 x 50m penalties for the barest of infringements, gifting several goals to the eventual winner of the game, by a mere 3pts.

The same team whose coach had a private liaison with the AFL CEO only a week ago, discussing how his team should get more free kicks. Move on, nothing to see here.

"..but umpires don't have an impact on the result."
Yes they do and they will continue to do so. It's the way the game has been designed.

TBH, I'm pretty close to dropping off.
Close to 45 years of supporting Port in one way or another and it's feeling like that time is coming to an end. I refuse to continue being a supporter of a Washington Generals prototype in the expanded VFL.

Our club's response to poor umpiring. Do you reckon Clarko or the Scott brothers react this way?

Agreed. What I'm interested in now is our response.

I'd be incredibly surprised and disappointed if Ken and co. werent concerned about our treatment on field.

More incompetence. The umpire gall this a touched behind. Now we are getting goal umpires who cant interpret the bleeding obvious.

At least they called for a review for the reason why this system was introduced, for the absolute howlers. Not the 25 replays to see if a pinky touched the ball.
