Roast Umpiring: Corruption or Incompetence, or both

I think the point is we can't do anything but whinge about umpiring, so apart from having a bitch about how corrupt the AFL is we need to focus on criticising what we could have done better. The umpires no doubt try to influence the result, but the aim is to be so good that the effect of the umpires' influence is negligible.

premiership teams sometimes need to win ugly too. Its these ugly wins that turn a 4-8th placed team into 1-4th placed team

This would have been one of those ugly wins had it been adjudicated fairly

Of course its not incompetence. The AFL is a multi-billion dollar industry, are people really naive enough to think they leave a major part of their business to incompetent umpires? Just like we are now seeing with the banking royal commission, the AFL will be doing all sorts of "unconscionable" behaviours behind the scenes to suit their plans.

The call would have been made to AFL House to make sure Hawthorn is still a live contender for the finals race when they play Adelaide in two weeks...which they wouldn’t have been if we had won and they were 4 points adrift going into their bye.

Can you imagine the shit ratings the Bulldogs and St Kilda games would get if Hawthorn was out of the race as well?

Now you’ve got Hawthorn, Adelaide, Port and GWS all in that chasing group and “exciting matches” every weekend = high ratings.

Unfortunately for the goal umpire the third umpire wasn't in on it. But I see this as a side effect of reliance on technology. Without goal review or DRS umpires were generally correct and television replays confirmed this. Now they are know that they have a back up if they make an error and when you think that way then you start to get things wrong.

Quarter 2. It happened just moments after James Sicily punched the ball out of Wingard's hands in frustration and anger at being out marked, without a 50 metre penalty being awarded. That 50 metre penalty would have given chad a shot at goal from about 20 out.

is it easy to get those stats?

I'd also like to know what his personal free kick tally paid against us in those games... impossible ask to find that but it would be interesting

Thats stone cold bottom of the ladder stuff that if you convert into a 22 game season thats 2.5 wins in a season
Considering that save for a couple of bleak seasons in 2011 & 2012 we never had seasons that poor (not even in those years)

If thats not corruption i dont know what is. This campaigner has a vendetta against us and a 4-32 record is proof

Need more stats on umpires so we can be critical of their performances as much as we do with AFL players. Just checked the FootyWire site who have pretty much every stat you can think of but nothing on umpires. Just team for and against free kicks.

This weeks game against Richmond will be interesting from an umpires point of view. Richmond are ranked 1st for frees against. We are ranked 3rd.

Send this to Hinkley and co. and they won't even bat an eye lid to it and say it's just poor discipline every time he gets us.

This club is soft to the core when it comes to umpiring and not standing up to them and the VFL boys club.
