Cant believe Flogarty didn't get cited for his crash into Weiterings back
Fog was basically invisible after quarter time. Makes sense Christian didn't see the contact. Probably thought he should fine Weitering for staging...

I am with you on this, surely you have to make the ball your objective in a marking contest. There is making him earn it and then there is just being a dirty thug. Fogarty clearly just frustrated at not being able to touch the ball for 3 quarters and decided to take it out on weitering.

Can we have these umps every game? Sure, they paid a lot more than I'd like to see, but I honestly can't recall any howlers (besides the Jonas below the knees, would have been hard for the ump to notice the push). I'm just glad that they were actually looking for any contact to Dixon in the marking contest.
My impression exactly.

It's worth noting that even though this was waved play on (which is a positive) it really should be called holding the ball. It's not acceptable for a player to try to con the umpire and get no penalty.

Yep 100% agree, playing for a free by ducking or lifting arms should constitute prior opportunity and be penalised accordingly.

Just makes you wonder how much time do the umpires spend during the week studying the game and enforcing rules that actually matter to the spirit of the game.

Just wanted to highlight some good umpiring today in regards to high tackles. That was the best game I've ever watched in terms of umpires not paying high where the player ducks into it. Not sure who the umps were or whether it was a personal thing or a wider umpiring directive but it was excellent.

Wait until the jumper is red white and blue.

You’re correct though.

Yep. Between the three calls for ducking and the 30s play on we got a pretty good right (all correct decisions but ones you don't expect)

How whistle happy were the umps today, they were blowing like Autumn Falls.
I was not complaining as we got a good run but the end of that 2nd half, the non holding the ball on Whitfield then ball on Georgiades topped off with the deliberate.
Im still getting over the 39-6 frees in Hobart 6-7 years ago but how long can these pretentious ****s get away with their incompetency week after week.
it will never change, if it was it would have been after the #freekickbulldogs 2016 travesty.
The umpires are ultra-sensitive so they can’t be criticised by coaches, media and the AFL don’t have the balls to grind the axe. I remember Razor Ray bragging about how he went and had a hard chat with Sam Mitchell at Swinburne Uni to not ridicule the umpiring fraternity.
Until they are open to scrutiny they will continue to act like hard done by school teachers. Let the coaches and media vent, make them accountable for the better of the game. Please.

Scrap the deliberate, just make it last player touched as it is currently a lucky dip.

The Duckwood and and Dogthrow, don’t be selective with what team can get away with it.

The Dusty fend off, how can so many players do it yet a Jake Stringer or Charlie Dixon get pulled up.

I pull my hair out and could go on but don’t want to hurt your reading eyes but I am astounded how inconsistent it is. It was once round to round, now game to game and right now I have no clue as it is quarter to quarter.

The AFL is not an industry that has a shortage of personnel, so I don’t know why the AFL let the mediocrity continue.
I think Gill’s passive management has been sub-optimal and look forward to his retirement so he can stop being a Closet Crows man wearing a St Kilda hat.

People usually complain that the game has been “over-officiated,” but it’s not the first time that “whistle-happy” umpiring gets compliments around here (just see the posts right above yours).

Maybe there is something into that. Perhaps it’s not coincidence.

I have no idea what holding the ball is these days but neither do the umpires so I don't feel so bad.
Blame Clarko. It was fine until the (in)famous coffee with Gill.

The biggest issue is that the umpires seem to selectively remember that "genuine effort" part of the rule and ping us (occasionally) saying "you have to make more of an effort", whereas, like with Gws last night if their players realise there's no support or they don't want to create a loose ball close to our goal they'll hold it in and lie there motionless with no free paid against them.

The requirement of a pantomime to convince the umps you're trying to dispose of it is ridiculous.

It seems to me that we've been getting a better run from the umpires since we've been based in Melbourne. They must see us as an honorary Victorian team now.

Actually thought in the first half that the last 2 games in front of no fans proves the umpies have issues with us fans more than the club/ players.

Thought quickly went away in the second half😂

This article was written Thursday night.

Friday night it was
1st qtr............... 5 v 3 ....................then the umpire probably were spoken to
then next 3 qtrs, 9 v 25

South Australian football great Graham Cornes believes a Victorian bias is contributing to both Adelaide clubs getting a bad run with umpires. Port Adelaide has given away the most free kicks this AFL season with 160, a whopping 26 more than the next most undisciplined team, the Crows.

Champion Data statistics show the Power also is the equal league leader for 50m penalties against with nine.

Free kicks have cost Ken Hinkley’s side 15 goals, ranked second only to North Melbourne’s 17. Adelaide is second in the competition for frees against with 134, while the Kangaroos (133), Richmond (125) and the Western Bulldogs (125) round out the top five. Essendon and Gold Coast have given away the fewest with 94 each, although the Bombers have conceded an equal competition-high five goals from 50m penalties.

Recruit Jason Horne-Francis (14) has given away the most free kicks at the Power and second-highest number in the AFL.

Spearhead Charlie Dixon (three) has coughed up the equal-most 50m penalties in the league ( 2 were in one incident against the Lions 1st quarter of the season where he tackled Rich vigorously but fairly, Rich threw the ball away, the umpire said he held onto Rich for too long and Charlie told him what a bullshit decision it was.... twice)

Cornes did not think Port Adelaide players were undisciplined, rather they were being adjudicated harshly.

“I go to these games and feel like they get a bad trot,” the former Crows coach said. “It’s not so much the free kick you give away because it’s possibly there, it’s the similar free kick you don’t get. “I’m convinced there is a Victorian bias.

“I believe they (umpires) come to Adelaide with a very definite perception that they’re not going to be impacted or affected by the crowd, the noise of affirmation factor. “They both get a raw deal, but Port Adelaide much more than the Crows even.”

Port Adelaide has not copped the umpires’ wrath as much over the past fortnight amid a three-game winning streak, losing the free kick count 47-44 overall.

Its biggest discrepancies have been 34-15 in the round 2 thrashing by Collingwood at the MCG, 25-12 in its season-opening home win against Brisbane and 32-22 during the away victory over Sydney three matches ago.

The Power has conceded a league-high 53 holding free kicks – 20 more than the next highest infringers, Adelaide.

Port is second for most high tackles conceded with 36, three behind Geelong.

Cornes said all clubs would be spending a lot of time practising tackling but umpires were making contradictory decisions. “You see a tackle from behind and one umpire says it’s in the back, then the next umpire says it’s fine, you rolled him over,” he said.

Earlier this season, Cornes wrote a column in The Advertiser arguing SA’s two AFL sides had always been marked harder by Victorian umpires, the match review officer and the tribunal. He said it could be traced back to state clashes from last century and “the same bias still prevails”.
.......

About time Hinkley had the guts to call out the poor umpiring. He mentioned the bold bit in the above story. There is no GM Footy Operations to keep these megalomaniacs under control and who the clubs can go and discuss things with. I think Andrew Dillion got the role added to his portfolio after Brad Scott left, but its just small fry to him, given he has about 10 other jobs.

Rd 1 H v Briz 12 v 25 -13
Rd 2 A v Col. 15 v 34 -19
Rd 3 H v Adl. 29 v 22 +7
Rd 4 A v Syd 23 v 32 -9
Rd 5 H v WB. 23 v 24 -1
Rd 6 H v WC 21 v 23 -1

Rd 7 A v StK 14 v 28 -14

Its the ones that have been missed against us but paid to the oppo, in most games, that are where the real bias comes into play.

Its subconscious bias absolutely. The umps sh*t themselves in big moments and completely put the whistle away as seen in the final 10 mins of the crows game. They have proved time and time again they are highly influenceable by home crowds, big games and subconscious bias.

Its the same reason the whistle goes away in a Grand Final (which is usually the best umpired game of the year).

Want proof of a subconscious bias? Look at the way they are officiating JHF so far this year. Gets nothing at all called for his efforts and been stung by multiple ridiculous HTB calls. Current state of umpiring is a dogs breakfast and the AFL needs to issue a pls explain to the umpiring department and for them to be better.

Is there any other profession where criticism or holding to account thereof is protected with a financial penalty.
