Roast Umpiring: Corruption or Incompetence, or both

They mentioned it in the broadcast on 7 and talked about it as if it was a once off, blue moon occurrence and not the weekly routine.

I can see why the club can't say much. They clearly all know it and feel it, I remember Summerton tweeting about it once I reckon, but they would cop it if they spoke about it publically.

I can sort of understand why some commentators can't talk about it as they have commercial agreements with the SANFL. Notably Kornes doesn't as far as I know so it would be good if he could put his bleating to good use instead of the other s**t he talks about.

What I can't understand is why the AFL don't step in at some point. That Jackson bump was exactly what they want to stamp out in the game. Not going for the ball, arms up, forcefully hitting a vulnerable player.

That's the sort of s**t they are going to get sued for in the future.

If anything, I would hope at the very least it hastens out exit from the league.

The only person who really had a crack was Graham Cornes when Chad was coach.

Assuming you have a 50/50 chance of winning the free kick count in any game, losing the count 10 games in a row is a 1 in 1024 chance.

That's like hoping to get lucky at Easter, but only getting back door action once since 1000 AD.

Lose the free kick count next week and it's like not getting any since Jesus walked out of the tomb and invented Easter.

I try not to get stuck into umpires, it’s a tough job and often a free either way can be paid - ie see a wrestling marking contest.

Today I thought was really poor. I don’t mind a bad decision as long as it is paid both ways.

Holding the ball - we had a number of holding the ball against us, Williams one the most obvious, and several that were not paid at all against Freo. JHF, Butters, SPP - all cope high tackles and hits regularly and don’t get paid. JHF was pinged holding the ball with the tackling player having both arms above his shoulders.

Some clear blocks, McEntee’s in the back, holding the man - it was all over the shop.

The free at the end of the first was a sad what the game has become situation.

3 Freo players vs JHF. All 3 could have gone and won the ball but all 3 opted to play for the free by intentionally waiting for JHF to collect the ball and go for an umpire decision. Not only was there no prior but the ball also spilt out but the ****ing ump still called HTB anyway after the Freo plays dragged it back into him.

Our core ball playing exciting midfield of Rozee, Butters and JHF… sit dead even of FF/FA.

Yet players like Jack Viney are sitting plus 20. Daicos bros x2 hardly know what a FA is.

Not sure what it is that makes us even worse off this year but I've long held the view there just aren't enough decent umpires in the AFL. It means any time we play a non-blockbuster (i.e. almost always) we get the bottom rung umps and worse umpiring as a result.

A Sunday arvo game against Freo where the umpiring was bad? I am not even the slightest bit shocked.

Leigh Matthews was a big one for the guy going to get the ball shouldn’t be penalised like they do most of the time.

JHF when he got done was busting his but to get the ball out, nearly smashed the TV.

Even G Lyon ‘didn’t agree with it’….

But it’s the ones they ‘don’t pay’ which are worse.
