I thought it was disappointing in the IR game when the aussie umpire allowed daniel wells(i think it was him) to take 15-16 steps on his way to goal in the dying minutes, just to try and reduce the margin to make the game more interesting. I think the commentators were saying that the MAXIMUM distance you can run with the ball was 6metres/10steps. This wasn't a muck-around game with Strauchnie running around, this was a professional series with medals, trophies, and national pride involved. So it got me thinking.......

in the AFL, is it possible that the umpires try to even out the game in the last 1/4?

What springs to mind is the brisbane game in round 2 this year. We were up by 3-4gls at the last change, and in the last 1/4, brisbane were receiving ALL the freekicks(especially infront of goal) and we were receiving NONE. We ended up losing by 2points.

I've also noticed that if the umpires have been paying the opposition all the freekicks during the game, they'll pay us some cheap one's in the last 1/4, just to make it look not so one-sided.

I'd like to get your thoughts on this, whether you think there is a chance it may sometimes happen, or if it's impossible. Cheers. ;)

It's not really the ones they call that shits me, its the ones they miss.

I do believe it happens in games yes.

QUARTERS, during a call if you hear Collingwood supporters complaining about the umpires, i.e Collingwood vs Essendon 2007, don't tell viewers how many frees each side has, we don't care, we care that the umpires have missed a shitload.

There was a holding the man decision not paid which resulted in a goal for Ireland, so it was probably fair. But I see that's not your point. I hope they don't try to even it up. I hope they call every free kick on its merits. I don't expect free kick counts to be even.

on the contrary i believe that the ones they call are worse then ones they miss. Id rather them not to blow the whistle then to blow it because it allows a more free flowing skillful game. The less times the whistle is blown the better.

I mean if its a really obvious holding the ball that doesn't get called and ends in something good for the oppostion.

That doesn't mean I like it when they blow the whistle alot, but when its there I want it called.
