We would have lost regardless of the result, but why does McLaren continually get Essendon games to umpire?

Worst display of officiating I've seen all year.

True. It was excruciating to watch at times. How a veteran umpire can makes so many errors is astounding.

Having said that, his camp approach to walking and moving in general was quite entertaining :D

First 3 goals of the game:

Scott McLaren (Essendon)

Scott McLaren (Essendon)

Scott McLaren (Essendon)

Wat a joke. McLaren would've ended up with at least 6, and a plethora of assists.

Essendons bests: McLaren, McLaren, McLaren, McLaren,.

ps before anyone says anything I am well aware we wouldve lost anyway :thumbsu:

For the last month or so I've been sticking up for the umpires. They've been subtle, paying the obvious ones and for the most part letting the game go.

Last night was a farce.

I don't buy into the theory that the frees paid for each team has to even, because ore often than not one team is more disciplined, but geez they got some soft free kicks.

Looking in the paper this morning, Lloyd (3), Lucas (3) and Monfries (4) had 10 free kicks between them. As a team we get 12. Somethings wrong with this.

Pay the free kicks if they are there, but please be consistent.

Repost from this thread:

The frees that were being given at one end were not being given at the other (hence, no consistency). I'm not saying the umpires lost the game for us or anything (our abysmal third quarter did that for us) but it was no wonder our players were getting frustrated when they couldn't touch an Essendon player for fear of getting pinged, while at the other end we couldn't buy a free.

Even when we were playing well we didn't win the umpires' favour. I just watched the second quarter again and there were a few (as in, on several occasions, not just once where it may be forgivable to make a mistake) times when our tackling clearly deserved some reward but nothing was paid. Its not fair on the players to have them work hard and receive nothing for it.

I want to stress again that I don't think this is why we lost the game, its just that the lack of consistency really pissed me off last night. If your think that free count was justified though, that's fine; I don't want to get into an argument over the quality of the umpiring.

Main point: no consistency across the ground.

On McLaren: As an umpire, if the crowd knows your name you're doing a bad job.

I had no idea what any of the free kicks McLaren was paying last night were for. He is a dead set disgrace. Pays free kicks that are not there all night and then misses ones right in front of him (ie. When Johnson took the ball out of the ruck ran a metre, got tackled, lost the ball and he called play on?!?)

Yet he'll still somehow get finals this year.

yeah that was a shocker. i was going nuts at Johnson for that idiotic bit of play- what kind of moron grabs the ball outta the ruck in the opposition forward line?????

Frawley gets it, gets tackled , shoved in the back , as a result drops the ball. Whistle! Essendon free kick! FFS!

I felt sorry for Frawley last night. He had some shockers paid against him, but otherwise had a pretty good game.

Admittedly I haven't read the replies to this thread.

To be fair, we were second to the ball on most occasions, and when this happens the free kick count is never going to be even.

There was one terrible free kick that went to Robertson which resulted in a goal (I was actually embarrassed as a Melbourne supporter to see Robertson dive time after time).

There was also a controversial free to Lucas against Rivers, when I swear Lucas was holding Rivers' arm into his body.

Melbourne was worse than the umpiring though. :thumbsd:

Re-post from a different thread.

I dont know who i hate more Brent Harvey or Matthew Lloyd.
Lloyd plays for more than Robbo. Sucks the umpires in everytime , typical wrestling , throws his arms up .Whistle free kick! F!

I agree totally. They have gotten better as the season has gone on, but last night was a disgrace. Lloyd got their second goal because of a supposed hold, then within the next 2 minutes the same thing happened to Watts and no call.

Umpires need to get out of the game. Pay the obvious one and let the players play. But if they pay the soft ones, pay them both ways.

Does anyone remember the Essendon game last year? God they get a good run don't they!

Brings back memories of the push and shove in the dieing moments a few yrs back with big Al on the goal line, bloody diver!

The thing that infuriates me the most about the umpiring is how the rules seem to have a different interpretation from one week to the next, even from game to game. 'Some days we strictly enforce the rules', 'some days we are lenient', 'some days we just make it up on the spot'.

McLaren is an absolute clown who should not be let anywhere near a football field.

I am also sick of players drawing free kicks for high contact by ducking their head when they see the front on contact coming. How the hell are you supposed to tackle a player who doubles over and headbutts you in the stomach??

They didn't umpire that game in the right spirit. We really need to get more former AFL players umpiring because they would probably have a better understanding of the 'spirit' in which football is played.

All very true about the farcical and inconsistent umpiring last night. Even watching it through the UStream, it was pretty obvious to me.

FWIW, I watched the game with 5 mates. 1 followed Melbourne, the rest of us were neutrals. We all agreed the 1st 3 goals were absurd frees.

Thanks to Jacko & F4E for those comments - much appreciated guys.

Reckon the match would at the very least have been a good deal closer if we hadn't copped these wretched umpiring decisions, but this seems to be a very familiar story for us Demons...
