I think you're somewhat missing the point mate, its not necessarily about the volume of consumption, or the state he's in whilst choosing to smoke. Its the fact that he's doing it in the first place. Wenger is a massive advocate of all things sports science, nutrition and fitness etc.

He has a very low tolerance for his players doing things like this, especially in the public eye (I'm not suggesting it would be okay if no one else saw it, it just makes it more idiotic that Wilshere chose to smoke in a public bar).

It doesn't matter. He is an athlete playing at the highest level.

And by you saying it's okay to do it while he's DRINKING is even worse.

He's still only 21, for pete's sake. Just a kid.

And here is a news alert for you, Jack is only human. He smoked a cigarette. Big deal. Proves he isn't perfect. Leave it, yeah.

You guys sound like journalists, overreacting at the smallest things. IT'S JUST A CIGARETTE. Relax.

What if he was caught with a prostitute? Would that still be okay?

Again I think you're missing the point.

Of course he's a young man and still immature in many respects. Geez I used to get up to worse things when I was 21 (long time ago now for me). However I wasn't getting paid £80k+ a week to ensure my body was in peak physical condition for my employers.

This is not an overreaction, its simply baffling that with all we now know about the effects of alcohol and cigarettes on the human body, especially in terms of recovery and conditioning for an elite athlete, that one would still abuse their bodies with that kind of stuff. And I don't believe two wrongs make a right by suggesting its okay to have a casual smoke whilst drinking.

Anyway, I'll leave it there. It was idiotic by him and he deserves the scorn he's getting. Chamakh did something similar a year or so ago and was rightly condemned by Wenger.

That wasn't my point.

Why should we drop him if he's going to play for England a few days later anyway?

Okay I see what you mean now. Fair point.

Irrespective of the smoking thing, I believe we should start tonight with the same XI that biltzed Napoli mid week. Wilshere on the bench with Rosicky starting again. Rosicky was quite rusty against Napoli but should be better for having an hour's football under his belt now.

I thought Rossicky was ok until he got caught looking over the wrong shoulder in midfield and lost the ball, then he just tried too hard to make up for it, which resulted in another mistake, and then it just kept cascading. Rossicky dragging two defenders with him out of the middle channel is the reason Ozil was all on his own for the first.

Yep spot on. Overstretched himself a few too many times and couldn't quite get himself back into it.

When Cazorla and Rosicky are back to full fitness and form, it will be a sight to behold to see them link up with Ozil and Ramsey etc in midfield. Not quite sure how they would all fit into our midfield shape, but will be a hell of a dilemma to have. Just hope when our players come back, we actually have a full list to choose from (ie, no other injuries to players currently playing).

Glen who are you going to wank over when Rosicky retires? :D

Fully expecting a Mundy "like" out of this.

In all seriousness, Giroud is one of the few men in this world that I find appealing to look at.

What if he was caught with a prostitute? Would that still be okay?

Why would it matter if he's caught with a prostitue? If he wants to pay to bag a hot bird/guy/shemale then thats his private choice. Don't see how it affects Arsenal or his ability to play football.

We are delving too far into these peoples private lives. My employer doesnt get a say in what i do when im not at work, footballers should be no different.

They do if it has an effect on your ability to perform that work - if you're going on all weekend benders that leave you haggard and non-functional in the office all day every Monday, you're going to get a visit from HR to offer counselling or the sack.

Smoking has a large negative effect on physical fitness, which absolutely will impact on his ability to perform his job - playing football. Employer has every right to penalise him for that and activities with similar impact.

You can ask him not to do it but you cannot penalise him for undertaking a legal activity. That's discrimination.

If Wilshire cannot perform his role as a footballer due to the affects of smoking thats one thing, to penalise him for smoking a cigarette is daft. Why are you not penalising the ones out drinking? Or eating fatty foods? or driving really fast? or having sex with multiple partners? or travelling to exotic countries and catching malaria? All have a risk of affecting their abilities as foodballers.

His penalty is not being selected for the team, which the manager has every right to do.

The ones who go out drinking to excess and eating shitty food are when caught, why do you think these clubs have dieticians, and their own strictly controlled kitchens?

Sex with multiple partners isn't detrimental unless it's unsafe sex, which is harder to catch and prove.

Wasn't Santos dropped when he was done for speeding and nearly arrested? Or was he just not playing at all?

When people travel to foreign countries, they have immunisation shots. When professional footballers travel to those countries it's on preseason exhibition tours where they spend the entire time with minders.

I cannot believe the extraordinary lengths you're going to in order to defend a player who smokes. It's absolutely not on for a professional athlete, they should know better, especially with Wenger at the helm.

You know Zidane smoked?
Messi smokes?
Koscielny smokes?
Ozil smokes?
Rooney smokes?

Currently around 1.3 billion people are smokers. You'll find a number of professional athletes will be smokers too.

I don't believe anyone is 'demonising' him, simply we're calling a spade a spade. It was idiotic of him to do that.

Wilshire has got to come off.

Plenty of space we are getting but crossing is rubbish. Need Rocky and his runs!
